1.1Homage to all the buddhas and bodhisattvas!

1.1恭敬禮敬一切佛陀和菩薩！

1.2Thus did I hear at one time. The Buddha was residing in Śrāvastī, in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada’s park, together with a great community of monks, consisting of 1,250 monks, and a great assembly of bodhisattvas. At that time, the Blessed One addressed the monks:

1.2我如是聽聞，一時佛陀住在舍衛城，祇樹給孤獨園，與大比丘眾一千二百五十人俱，及菩薩大眾。爾時，世尊告諸比丘言：

1.3“Monks, for as long as they live, bodhisattvas, great beings, should not abandon four factors even at the cost of their lives. What are these four?

1.3「比丘們，菩薩、大士們，只要活著就應該不拋棄四個因素，即使要付出生命的代價也不應該拋棄。這四個因素是什麼呢？

1.4“Monks, for as long as they live, bodhisattvas, great beings, should not abandon the thought of awakening even at the cost of their lives.

1.4「比丘們，菩薩、大士，只要活著就應該不放棄菩提心，即使要犧牲生命也在所不惜。

1.5“Monks, for as long as they live, bodhisattvas, great beings, should not abandon the spiritual friend even at the cost of their lives.

1.5「比丘們，菩薩、大士們，只要活著一天，就算犧牲生命也不應該放棄善知識。

1.6“Monks, for as long as they live, bodhisattvas, great beings, should not abandon tolerance and lenience even at the cost of their lives.

1.6比丘們，菩薩大士，只要活著，就不應該為了保住性命而放棄忍辱和溫柔。

1.7“Monks, for as long as they live, bodhisattvas, great beings, should not abandon dwelling in the wilderness even at the cost of their lives.

1.7「比丘們，菩薩、大士只要活著，即使犧牲生命也不應該放棄阿蘭若住。」

1.8“Monks, for as long as they live, bodhisattvas, great beings, should not abandon these four factors even at the cost of their lives.”

1.8「比丘們，菩薩、大士在世期間，即使要付出生命的代價，也不應放棄這四個因素。」

1.9The Blessed One spoke these words, and once the Sugata had spoken in this way, he, the Teacher, also said the following:

1.9世尊說了這些話，善逝如此說法之後，導師又說了以下的話：

“Let the wise conceive the thought of perfect awakening,

「智者應當發起圓滿覺悟的思想，」

And not cast aside the thought of omniscience;

不放棄一切智的思想；

Let them maintain the strength of tolerance and lenience,

讓他們保持忍辱和溫柔的力量，

And never forsake the spiritual friend.

永遠不要放棄善知識。

“If the wise, like the king of beasts, abandon fear, [F.61.a]

「如果智者像獸王一樣，放棄恐懼，

Always remain dwelling in the wilderness,

恆常保持阿蘭若住，

And constantly maintain these factors,

並且經常保持這些因素，

They will conquer the māras and attain awakening.”

他們將會征服魔，獲得覺悟。

1.12When the Blessed One had said this, the monks and bodhisattvas, together with the entire assembly, rejoiced and praised the words of the Blessed One.

1.12世尊說完這些話後，比丘、菩薩和整個大眾都歡喜踴躍，讚歎世尊的教言。

1.13This concludes “The Noble Mahāyāna Sūtra on the Four Factors.”
