The Songs of the Nāga Kings
龍王之歌
2.1The householder master builder then asked the superintendent, venerable Pūrṇa, “Pūrṇa, where is the Blessed One residing at present?”
2.1居士大施主隨即問監工尊者富樓那說:「富樓那,薄伽梵現在住在何處?」
The superintendent, venerable Pūrṇa, replied to the householder master builder, “Householder, to the north of here is the country of Kośala, within which, at the base of the majestic snow mountains, lies the city of Śrāvastī. There one finds the householder Anāthapiṇḍada’s park, a grove that formerly belonged to Prince Jeta, the son of the King of Kośala. That is where the Blessed One resides.”
監工富樓那尊者回答居士施主說:「居士,此地向北是憍薩羅國。在該國境內,雄偉的雪山腳下,坐落著舍衛城。城中有給孤獨長者的園林,那是從前憍薩羅國王之子祇陀太子的園林。薄伽梵現在就住在那裡。」
2.2The householder master builder asked the superintendent, venerable Pūrṇa, “Pūrṇa, how far from here is the city of Śrāvastī?”

“Householder, it is three thousand sixty-four leagues away.”
2.3The householder master builder asked the superintendent, venerable Pūrṇa, [F.111.b] “Pūrṇa, from so far away, how could the Blessed One ever possibly come here?”
2.3居士工頭問監工尊者富樓那說:「富樓那,從這麼遠的地方,薄伽梵怎麼可能來到這裡呢?」
“Householder, for the Thus-Gone One there is no near or far. Householder, if the Blessed One so wishes, he can journey to billions of universes, more numerous than the grains of sand in uncountable Ganges rivers, in order to ripen sentient beings. Householder, the Thus-Gone One knows the thoughts and actions of all beings there. He knows them accurately, he sees them, he understands them, they appear directly to him. In the blink of an eye he knows the thoughts and actions of all beings. Householder, if the Thus-Gone One so wishes, he can journey to billions of realms with the mindset of benefiting all beings.”
「居士,對於如來來說,沒有遠近的分別。居士,如果薄伽梵願意,他可以前往數十億個宇宙,其數量超過無數恆河中的沙粒,為了成熟眾生。居士,如來知道那裡所有眾生的思想和行為。他準確地知道,他看到,他理解,它們直接呈現在他面前。在一眨眼的瞬間,他知道所有眾生的思想和行為。居士,如果如來願意,他可以懷著利益一切眾生的心念前往數十億個領域。」
2.4“Pūrṇa, if I were to invite him to a fine meal in order to acquire roots of virtue, would the Thus-Gone One come here?”

“Householder, even if one is just giving a little, one should still invite the Thus-Gone One to a fresh meal. In order to embrace your roots of virtue, the Blessed One will come here together with his congregation of hearers.”
「居士,即使只是供養少許食物,也應當邀請如來赴齋。為了讓你的善根成熟,薄伽梵會與聲聞眾一同來到這裡。」
2.5So the householder master builder, doing what venerable Pūrṇa had advised, fetched flowers, flower garlands, and incense. In the sandalwood courtyard and the roof of the temple he placed flower decorations and sprinkled perfume. He then faced in the direction where the Blessed One was dwelling, draped his shawl over one shoulder, placed his right knee on the ground, and, with palms joined, he said, “Blessed One, please consider me with compassion! Thus-gone, worthy, perfect Buddha, please come here, together with your congregation of hearers, to accept a fine meal! [F.112.a] Blessed One, you who reside in Prince Jeta’s Grove, with your divine, non-human ear may you hear this invitation made by this householder master builder and agree to come here!”
2.5於是這位居士大屋主依照尊者富樓那的建議,去取來了花朵、花環和香料。他在檀香庭院和寺廟的屋頂上放置了花卉裝飾,灑上了香水。然後他面向薄伽梵所住的方向,把披肩搭在一邊肩膀上,右膝跪地,雙掌合十,說道:「薄伽梵,請您憐憫我!如來、應供、正等覺,請您與您的聲聞僧眾一起來此接受一場盛宴!薄伽梵啊,您居住在祇陀太子的園林,請用您神聖的、非人的耳朵聽聞這位居士大屋主所發出的邀請,並同意來此!」
2.6In this way, the householder master builder earnestly invited the Blessed One. He then told all his servants, workers, employees, family members, kinsfolk, and companions, “All of you, listen! I have invited the Blessed One, the thus-gone, worthy, perfect Buddha, together with his congregation of hearers, to a fine meal. You must now do everything you can to assist in this regard—everything that is in your power!”
2.6如此,那位居士工匠殷切地邀請了薄伽梵。然後他告訴所有的僕人、工人、員工、家庭成員、親戚和同伴說:「各位,請聽我說!我已經邀請了薄伽梵、如來、應供、正等覺,以及他的聲聞弟子眾團,來參加一場盛大的供養。你們現在必須盡一切努力在這件事上提供幫助——做出你們力所能及的一切!」
2.7All his friends, kinsmen, relatives, male and female servants, workers, and employees replied to the householder master builder, “Householder, you have gone mad! Householder, you’re confused! Who can invite the Blessed One for a fine meal without being able to see him? Householder master builder, you should invite the Blessed One properly.”
2.7他的所有朋友、親戚、親屬、男性和女性僕人、工人及員工都回應這位居士工匠說:「居士啊,你瘋了!居士啊,你糊塗了!誰能在看不見薄伽梵的情況下邀請他享用豐盛的meal呢?居士工匠啊,你應該恰當地邀請薄伽梵。」
2.8But the householder master builder told his friends, kinsmen, relatives, male and female servants, workers, and employees, “Friends, the Blessed One has obtained the boundless qualities of a buddha. Thus, he knows my thoughts and therefore he will also accept my invitation.”
2.8但那位居士施主對他的朋友、親戚、族人、男女僕人、工人和員工說:「諸位,薄伽梵已經獲得了佛陀無邊的功德,因此他知道我的想法,所以他也會接受我的邀請。」
Hearing this, they all felt delighted, joyful, happy, thrilled, and merry, and that very evening they began preparing plenty of the finest food and drink.
聽到這些話,他們都感到歡喜、喜悅、快樂、興高采烈和愉悅,那天傍晚他們就開始準備大量最上等的食物和飲料。
2.9That afternoon, as the Blessed One arose from his meditative seclusion, he went into the bamboo courtyard. [F.112.b] At that time the bamboo courtyard was filled with many monks who had assembled there, including venerable Ānanda. The Blessed One then spoke to venerable Ānanda: “Ānanda, go to the city of Śrāvastī and summon all the monks in town back to this gathering place here with me.”
2.9那天下午,薄伽梵從禪定中起身,走進了竹林園。此時竹林園裡聚集了許多比丘,其中包括尊者阿難。薄伽梵對尊者阿難說道:"阿難,你去舍衛城,將城裡所有的比丘都召回來,聚集到這裡與我在一起。"
2.10Venerable Ānanda obliged and, doing as the Blessed One had instructed, he went to the city of Śrāvastī, summoning all the monks in town back to the gathering place. When they were all back together with the Blessed One, Ānanda said, “Blessed One, all the monks who were in the city of Śrāvastī are now gathered here. Blessed One, they are all here now.”
2.10阿難尊者遵從薄伽梵的吩咐,前往舍衛城,把城中所有的比丘都召集回來,聚集到這個集會的地方。當所有比丘都聚集在薄伽梵身邊時,阿難說道:「薄伽梵,舍衛城中所有的比丘現在都已經聚集在這裡了。薄伽梵,他們全部都在這裡了。」
2.11So the Blessed One then went to the assembly hall, took his seat, and said to the monks, “Monks, in the city of Transcending Virtue there is a householder master builder who has invited the Buddha and the congregation of monks. I have accepted the invitation, so those monks among you who have miraculous abilities, please go now and fetch your ordination sticks.” At that point there was a group of five hundred monks who picked up their ordination sticks. The Buddha then spoke to them: “Monks, in order to delight others with a display of various miraculous abilities, you should journey there through the sky.”
2.11薄伽梵於是進入集會堂,坐下後對比丘們說:「比丘們,在超德城有一位居士工匠邀請佛陀及比丘眾。我已經接受了邀請,所以你們中具有神通的比丘,請現在去取你們的牒。」此時五百位比丘拿起了他們的牒。佛陀於是對他們說:「比丘們,為了用各種神通的展現使他人歡喜,你們應該在空中旅行前往那裡。」
“Blessed One, we will do that,” the monks replied, and they listened to the instructions of the Blessed One.

2.12In the early morning when the night had passed, the Blessed One put on his lower garment, dressed in his Dharma robes, [F.113.a] and picked up his alms bowl. He then rose up into the air above Prince Jeta’s Grove and flew toward the city of Transcending Virtue. At that time in Rājagṛha there was a monk known as Valkalāyana, who lived in seclusion under a fig tree on the slopes of the Hill of Sages. During the first and last watch of the night he would never sleep but diligently practice, persevering in the practices related to the thirty-seven factors of awakening as well as the practices of tranquility and insight. As he was there practicing, he saw the Blessed One and the congregation of hearers traveling through the sky, as if they were majestic swans. Folding his hands in the direction of the Blessed One, he bowed down and prostrated to him.
2.12天明時分,夜幕已去,薄伽梵穿上下衣,披上法衣,拿起缽,從祇陀太子花園上升到空中,飛向超德城。此時在王舍城,有一位名叫樹皮衣的比丘,獨居在仙人山山坡下的無花果樹下。在夜間第一時和最後時刻,他從不睡眠,精進修行,堅持修習三十七菩提分法及止觀的修行。當他在修行時,看到薄伽梵和聲聞弟子們在虛空中行進,如同莊嚴的天鵝般。他向著薄伽梵合掌,向他頂禮。
2.13The Blessed One then turned to venerable Valkalāyana and said, “Valkalāyana, come with us!” As soon as venerable Valkalāyana realized what the Blessed One was saying, he jumped right off the cliff into the gorge without any consideration for life and limb. As soon as he leaped into space, he obtained the six superknowledges.
2.13薄伽梵便轉向尊者樹皮衣說道:「樹皮衣,跟我們來吧!」尊者樹皮衣一聽到薄伽梵的話,立刻不顧生死地從懸崖跳入峽谷。他剛躍入虛空,就獲得了六神通。
2.14At that point the Blessed One, Valkalāyana, and all five hundred worthy ones proceeded toward the city of Transcending Virtue.
2.14此時,薄伽梵、樹皮衣及五百位阿羅漢一起朝著超德城前進。
2.15Once there, the monks descended on the sandalwood courtyard and the temple in a display of various miraculous emanations. Some took on the form of lions, some the form of tigers; some were elephants, while others were in the shape of horses, bulls, nāgas, garuḍa kings, universal monarchs, and ministers. Some remained in their usual shape as monks. Some monks radiated blue lights, [F.113.b] while others radiated red, white, and purple lights from their bodies. Some caused a rain to fall, others made the wind blow. Some brought down a rain of gems, while others made it rain with gold, silver, and perfume. Some brought a cool breeze, others carried the ground on their shoulders, while yet others brought clouds with oceans of water. Some arrived in carriages, such as elephant carriages, horse carriages, nāga carriages, kumbhāṇḍa carriages, yakṣa carriages, and gandharva carriages. Still others performed other miracles, such as letting fires blaze and water pour from their bodies. It was amidst all of these miracles and many others that they descended upon the sandalwood courtyard and the temple.

2.16The Blessed One assumed his own form adorned with the thirty-two marks and the eighty signs of a great being. He was beautiful, shining, with peaceful faculties and a peaceful mind. He was gentle and possessed a sacred tranquility. He was perfectly gentle and utterly tranquil. Brahmā, who is lord of the Sahā world; Śakra, who is lord of the gods; the four great kings; and thousands of gods from the pure abodes venerated him by bringing down a rain of nectar and māndārava flowers as he descended on the sandalwood courtyard and the temple. In this way the Blessed One along with his assembly of hearers caused all beings there to be overjoyed. The brahmins and householders in Transcending Virtue [F.114.a] all saw the Blessed One and his assembly of hearers descending from the sky and it seemed to them as if they were great majestic swans. Seeing this, tens of thousands of beings purified the eye of Dharma so that it became stainless and free of blemishes. Tens of thousands of beings, who had practiced with previous blessed buddhas, engendered the mind of awakening upon seeing the miraculous manifestation of the Buddha. As soon as they had engendered the mind of awakening, they developed acceptance that phenomena are unborn. The thousands of beings who had not previously engendered the mind of awakening, now did so. Upon seeing the miracles of the hearers, eighty thousand beings, who had previously been tamed by the hearers, now purified the eye of Dharma so that it became stainless and free of blemishes with regard to phenomena. As the tens of thousands of gods witnessed the Blessed One’s miracles, they purified the eye of Dharma so that it became stainless and free of blemishes with regard to phenomena. As tens of thousands of gods in the form realm purified the eye of Dharma so that it became stainless and free of blemishes with regard to phenomena, they obtained the result of a non-returner.

2.17Then Śakra, the lord of the gods, said to a gandharva prince known as Pañcaśikha, “Pañcaśikha, you must pay respect to the Thus-Gone One.”

“I shall do so,” replied the gandharva prince Pañcaśikha.
2.18Paying heed to what Śakra, the lord of the gods, had instructed, he and six million other gandharvas paid respect to the Thus-Gone One with song and music. Their tunes and songs caused the nāga kings in the oceans so much joy, pleasure, and happiness that they ventured out from their abodes. As they left their realms, the main elements in the oceans began to churn. The nāga king Sundara and eight hundred million nāgas left the oceans in order to behold the Blessed One. [F.114.b] The nāga king Surasundara and nine hundred million other nāgas left the oceans in order to behold, venerate, and serve the Blessed One. The nāga king Sāgara and nine hundred million other nāgas left the oceans in order to behold the Blessed One. The nāga king Golden Crown and nine hundred million other nāgas left the oceans in order to behold the Blessed One. The nāga king Utpala Eye and nine hundred million other nāgas left the oceans in order to behold the Blessed One. The nāga king Nanda and nine hundred million other nāgas left the oceans in order to behold the Blessed One. Also to behold the Blessed One came the nāga king Upananda with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Anavatapta with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Elarāvaṇa with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Encompassing Son with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Dark Eyes with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Gautama with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Kambala with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Dhṛtarāṣṭra with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Nīlagrīva with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Golden Throat with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Terrifying with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Manasvin with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Vairocana with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Viraja with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Mahāprabha with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Pratāpana with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Bali with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Mahāmegha with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Mahācandra with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Blower of Wind with nine hundred million nāgas; [F.115.a] the nāga king Power Wielder with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Sūryagarbha with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Resilient One with nine hundred million nāgas; the nāga king Reflecting All with nine hundred million nāgas; and the nāga king Causing Downpour with nine hundred million nāgas. Apart from them, there was a further boundless number of quintillions of nāgas, each with a retinue of nine hundred million other nāgas, who rose from the oceans in order to behold the Blessed One.

2.19These nāgas all stirred the oceans, while on land the monks caused a commotion in the cities, towns, marketplaces, and hillside villages. Then the earth began to quiver, tremble, quake, wobble, rock, sway, vibrate, shudder, and reel.
2.19這些龍王攪動了大海,在陸地上,比丘們在城市、城鎮、市集和山間村莊中引起了騷動。那時大地開始震顫、搖晃、顫動、搖擺、晃蕩、搖曳、振動、戰慄和傾斜。
2.20At that point the householder master builder personally began distributing bountiful and delicious food and drink to the Buddha and the congregation of monks until they were all pleased.
2.20此時,居士大建築師親自開始向佛陀和比丘僧團分配豐盛美味的食物和飲料,直到他們都感到滿足歡喜。
2.21The Blessed One then warned the monks, “Monks, do not eat these alms! The disturbance by these nāgas has made the city of Transcending Virtue unsuitable.”
2.21薄伽梵隨後告誡比丘們說:「比丘們,不要食用這些布施!這些龍所造成的騷亂已經使超德城變得不適合了。」
2.22Once the Blessed One had accepted his meal, he flew into the sky like a great majestic swan. The Blessed One then discharged the gathering of monks and instead projected a boundless display of hundreds of thousands of emanations. For those nāga kings who wished to see the Blessed One, an emanation of the Blessed One appeared. And in order to ripen those nāga kings who did not have faith in the Blessed One and did not wish to behold him, [F.115.b] he projected a boundless display of quintillions of light rays, so that an infinite number of quintillions of nāgas gained acceptance that phenomena are unborn, and an equal number gained trust in the Buddha. As soon as they had gained trust in the Buddha, they passed away from their nāga existence and were reborn in the higher realms. As the Buddha had now tamed an infinite number of quintillions of nāgas, he partook of the meal offerings and flew again into the sky.

2.23At that point in the area of Samapāṇitalajāta there lived an ascetic called Agnidatta, who witnessed the Blessed One flying through the sky. Seeing this, he felt strong devotion to the Blessed One and called out to him, “Blessed One, please grant me that ability! If you come to stay here with me, I will worship you!” The Blessed One knew the thoughts of the ascetic Agnidatta and, out of love for beings of the future, he put down his feet on a flat rock. Then the Blessed One said to the ascetic Agnidatta, “Priest, in order that you develop a trusting mind, this is a support for your worship.”
2.23此時在等味地地區住著一位名叫火施的沙門,他看到薄伽梵在空中飛行。看到這一幕,他對薄伽梵生起了強烈的恭敬心,向他呼喊說:「薄伽梵,請賜予我這種能力!如果你願意來我這裡住,我將供養你!」薄伽梵知道沙門火施的想法,為了利益未來的眾生,他把腳放在了一塊平坦的岩石上。然後薄伽梵對沙門火施說:「沙門,為了讓你生起信心,這是你供養的所依。」
2.24Then the Blessed One said to Mahāmaudgalyāyana, “Maudgalyāyana, come! We must go to the lake where Anavatapta resides.”
2.24薄伽梵隨後對大目犍連說道:「目犍連,來吧!我們必須去到阿那婆達多所住的湖邊。」
“Certainly, Blessed One,” Mahāmaudgalyāyana replied, thus obeying the request of the Blessed One. They proceeded to the shores of the lake where the nāga king Anavatapta resided.
「是的,薄伽梵,」大目犍連回答道,就這樣遵從了薄伽梵的請求。他們前往無熱龍王所住的湖畔。
2.25When the nāga king Anavatapta realized that the Blessed One had arrived together with his community of hearers, he manifested five hundred seats made of the seven precious substances: gold, silver, beryl, crystal, red pearls, coral, and emeralds. [F.116.a] At the center of these five hundred seats he arranged a seat for the Blessed One made of the seven precious substances and covered it in a fine cloth of the nāgas. The nāga king Anavatapta, together with a retinue of nāga maidens, then went before the Blessed One.

2.26When the Blessed One knew that Mahāmaudgalyāyana had finished his meal and washed his alms bowl and hands, he said to him, “Maudgalyāyana, please go and tell the elder Śāriputra that the teacher is asking for him.”
2.26薄伽梵知道大目犍連已經用完飯食並洗淨了他的缽和雙手,就對他說:「目犍連,請你去告訴長老舍利弗,老師在請他。」
2.27“Yes, Blessed One,” replied venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, and he did as the Blessed One had instructed.

2.28As fast as a strong man can stretch out or bend his arm, venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana left Anavatapta’s lake and arrived back at Prince Jeta’s Grove, right in front of venerable Śāriputra, who was busy stitching his outer robe.

2.29The two of them first paid various compliments to each other before venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said, “Venerable Śāriputra, our teacher is calling for you. Since our teacher is fond of you, you must come with me. Our teacher is asking you to go.”
2.29他們兩人先互相致敬問候,然後大目犍連尊者說道:「舍利弗尊者,我們的老師在呼喚你。既然老師很疼愛你,你一定要跟我去。老師正在等著你。」
2.30In reply, venerable Śāriputra said, “Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, I should first finish sewing my robe.”

Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana now transformed five of his fingers into needles and began stitching.
“Venerable Maudgalyāyana, why are you doing that?” asked venerable Śāriputra.

“We have to stitch your robe quickly!”
“Very well, then finish the stitching.” [F.116.b]
2.31So venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana immediately completed the stitching and insisted, “Venerable Śāriputra, come on then, we are leaving now!”

“If you do not come, I will carry you with my strength.”
2.32“Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, as soon as you can lift this belt with your strength I will know that you can also carry me.”

In the meantime, venerable Śāriputra had transformed his belt to weigh as much as seven worlds. So when venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana attempted to lift the belt by means of his magical powers, the entire trichiliocosm trembled, yet he was unable to lift the belt.

2.33At that point many waves appeared on Anavatapta’s lake, which caused venerable Aśvajit to ask the Blessed One, “Blessed One, what is causing this great earthquake?”

The Blessed One replied to venerable Aśvajit, “It is a manifestation caused by the great hearers.”

2.34Venerable Śāriputra then said to venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, “Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, just go ahead! I will come as well.”

2.35When venerable Śāriputra arrived before the Blessed One, he prostrated to the Blessed One’s feet and took a seat. Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana arrived later, since venerable Śāriputra had attained miraculous abilities related to travel and therefore was the first to arrive before the Blessed One.The story of this playful contest between Mahāmaudgalyāyana and Śāriputra is also found in the narrative known as the Anavataptagāthā; see i.14 and The Chapter on Medicines, 9.1531 ff.

2.36Then, since the Blessed One had caused all this to happen, the nāga kings of the ocean had come to see the Blessed One, and were now also in attendance. At this point the nāga king Sundarānanda said to the Blessed One, “If the Blessed One would grant me the opportunity, I have something to ask of the Thus-Gone One.”

2.37Sundarānanda then spoke these verses:
“Let me ask this of the teacher who grants happiness:「請讓我向賜予樂的導師請教:」
When acting, how should one act,行動時,應當如何行動,
So that through the path of happiness one reaches nirvāṇa?怎樣才能通過樂的道路而到達涅槃?
Well-Gone One, with your generosity, please teach this!善逝,請以您的布施波羅蜜為我們開示吧!
“Here in the nāga realm of Anavatapta we request you,「在這龍王阿那婆達多的龍宮中,我們恭請您,
Protector and Well-Gone One, please teach.保護者與善逝,請為我們開示。
As a result of virtuous actions you are beautiful.因為行持善法,你才具有莊嚴。
Through such goodness the Well-Gone One has come about.正是由於這樣的善行,善逝得以成就。
“As you practiced in your previous existences,「如同你在過去生中所修習的,
You joyfully made all beings happy.你歡喜地讓一切眾生都感到快樂。
As you did such good deeds,當你做出如此善行時,
You have reached nirvāṇa through the paths of happiness.你已透過樂的道諦到達涅槃。
“With the words of the teacher, I, Sundara, became happy,「聽聞導師的教誨,我善達變得樂喜,」
And immediately I knelt on the ground.我隨即跪在地上。
With boundless joy I am filled with devotion,我以無邊的喜充滿了恭敬。
And prostrate to our guide, Light of the World.我向我們的導師、世界之光敬禮。
“I prostrate to the teacher’s intelligent learning.「我向導師的智慧學問頂禮。
I prostrate to you who leaves all existences behind.我向已超越一切存在的你恭敬頂禮。
I prostrate to you who has the pure and fearless mind.我頂禮你,擁有純淨無畏之心的善逝。
I prostrate to the unique words of the Well-Gone One.”我禮敬善逝獨特的言語。
2.42The nāga king Surasundara then spoke to the Blessed One in these melodious verses:
“Your fine eyes shine with beauty.「你的美好眼睛閃耀著光彩。
Your virtuous mind is freed from disturbing emotions.你的清淨心遠離了煩惱。
Your experience is one of stainless wisdom.您的體驗是無垢的慧。
As you carried out activities, how were your perfect lives?你們在進行修行活動時,你們的圓滿生命是如何的?
“In order to benefit the world and its gods,為了利益世界和天神,
Whatever you did, it was in search of awakening and peace.無論你做什麼,都是在追求菩提與寂靜。
Sacred and supreme being, please teach us聖潔至高的存在啊,請為我們開示
About your transcendent mind when you engaged in activity.關於您在從事各項活動時所展現的出世間心。
“Victorious One, you have overcome all stains and controlled your faculties.「勝者,你已經克服了所有的污垢,並且調伏了你的根。
Your mind is free from the ties of desire.您的心識遠離了貪的束縛。
We are followers of your realized mind.我們是追隨您已證悟心的弟子。
With your peaceful and undisturbed mind, please teach us.以你寂靜而安定的心,請為我們教導。
“Learned ones act virtuously,「有智慧的人行為善良,
And do not regress from that, even at the cost of their life.即使為此付出生命的代價,也不要從中退縮。
Whenever you act, you are free of disturbing emotions,每當你行動時,你都離開了煩惱。
And act virtuously with your body and speech.並以身語善妙行持。
“As you carried out good deeds, [F.117.b]「當你們進行善業時,」
You acted purely toward beings in saṃsāra.你對輪迴中的眾生行為純淨。
Like a lotus blooming in a lake,如同蓮花在湖中綻放,
You are unstained, your awakening accomplished.你清淨無染,菩提已成就。
“The speech of the Well-Gone One,「善逝的言語,
Has made the nāga Surasundara happy and joyful.令龍妙音歡喜若狂。
Right now I bow to the ground,此刻我五體投地禮拜,
And pay homage to the Buddha, the supreme among men.並向佛陀頂禮,他是人中至尊。
“Sage, you benefit the three worlds.聖者,你利益三界。
I pay homage to your peaceful intelligence.我向您寂靜的智慧頂禮致敬。
I will follow the example of your activities,我將效仿您的行為榜樣。
And give rise to the mind that never wavers from awakening.並且生起永不動搖於菩提的心念。
“When practicing for the welfare of others,「當為他人的福祉而修習時,
I will disregard life and limb.我將不顧生命與身體。
Bringing an end to suffering, I will become a buddha,我將滅除苦難,成就佛陀。
And attain unsurpassed awakening and peace.”獲得無上菩提與寂靜。
Knowing the thoughts of that nāga,了知那條龍的心念,
The Victorious One smiled, having conquered all enemies.勝者微笑,已經降伏了一切敵人。
At that point as many buddha realms此時,有如恆河沙數般眾多的佛剎
As there are sand grains in the Ganges were bathed in light.恆河中的沙粒數量那麼多的佛剎都被光照亮了。
As the Well-Gone One smiled,善逝微笑時,
The gods in the sky called out their approval:天空中的天神們齊聲讚歎:
“Amazing! The Victorious One has overcome all stains and mastered the faculties.「太神奇了!勝者已經克服了所有的污垢,掌握了所有的根。
He is unequaled and unexcelled!”他是無與倫比、無上的!
Many buddha realms shook,許多佛剎都震動了,
And the gods in the desire realm were puzzled.欲界的天神感到困惑。
Many assemblies of gods were delighted,眾多天神的集會都感到歡喜,
And paid homage to the Victorious One, the able ruler.向勝者、能力超群的統治者頂禮膜拜。
The teacher’s hearer who was supreme in miraculous abilities,那位具足最勝神通能力的導師的聲聞,
Maudgalyāyana, asked the Victorious One,目犍連問勝者說:
“Blessed One, that boundless smile of yours,「薄伽梵,您那無邊的微笑,
Blessed Well-Gone One, what are its causes and circumstances?”薄伽梵善逝,它的因緣是什麼?
When Maudgalyāyana asked in this way,目犍連以這樣的方式提問時,
The Victorious One replied to clear away doubt:勝者為了消除疑惑而回應說:
“This nāga who is paying homage to me「這條正在禮拜我的龍
Will become a buddha in the future.將來會成為佛陀。
“All these realms pervaded by light「一切這些被光遍滿的領域
Will become a single realm of that victorious one.將成為那位勝者的單一佛國。
Hence, as he becomes such a victorious one,因此,當他成為這樣的勝者時,
The name of this guide will be Powerful Victory Banner.這位導師的名號將是強大勝利幢。
“Limitless quintillions of beings [F.118.a]無量無邊的眾生
Shall be taken across existence by this guide.將會由這位導師帶領度過輪迴。

Maudgalyāyana, you must know this!”目犍連,你必須知道這一點!
When the nāga heard this prophecy當那條龍聽到這個預言時
He became utterly thrilled.他歡喜踴躍。
Hearing this prophecy,聽到這個預言,
He floated upward to a height of eighty palm trees.他浮升到八十棵棕櫚樹的高度。
Floating in space, he surveyed the pure buddha realms in the ten directions,浮在虛空中,他遍觀十方清淨佛土,
And beheld countless excellent buddhas.並看到了無數殊勝的佛。
Seeing these buddhas, who are supreme among men,見到這些佛陀,是人中最殊勝者,
He praised the victorious ones in this verse:他用這首偈頌讚歎勝者:
“Victorious ones, you benefit others and have conquered the enemy.「勝者們,你們利益他人,已經戰勝了敵人。
You have controlled faculties and your speech is impeccable.你們已經調伏了各種根,言語也無有缺陷。
I salute you, radiant speakers of the truth!我禮敬你們,光明的真理說法者!
I salute you, well-gone ones who speak words without confusion!”我向你們這些善逝禮敬,你們說出的言語沒有混亂!
2.60At that point the nāga king Sāgara addressed the Blessed One in these melodious verses:
“I pay homage to you who relieves fear and has liberated speech!「我禮敬你,消除恐懼、解脫言語的聖者!」
When engaged in activity, whatever you have done當你在從事活動時,無論你做了什麼
Has been free from fear, so that you liberate others.已經遠離恐懼,因此能夠解脫他人。
Please teach me that path that relieves fear!請教導我那能夠解脫恐懼的道!
“Guide, your being is free from fear,「導師,你的存在本質是遠離恐懼的,
And you liberate others from fear as well.而你也使他人從恐懼中獲得解脫。
When I hear your well-spoken words,當我聽聞你善妙的言語時,
I will become insatiable in acting them out.”我將永不厭倦地實踐它們。
As the nāga Sāgara, the Great Sea,龍海,偉大的海洋,
Made this request to the teacher for the good of all,為了一切眾生的利益,向老師提出了這個請求。
He was timid and respectful,他是怯懦而恭敬的。
As he sat before the lord of men.當他坐在人中之尊前時。
The Guide, who knew his thoughts,導師瞭知他的心念,
Was fearless in whatever he did.在他所做的一切事情中都無所畏懼。
Thus, to free others from fear,因此,為了使他人解脫恐懼,
He taught in a voice that possesses eight qualities.他以具備八種特質的聲音進行教導。
Without any sticks or swords, he taught beings他未曾持刀動武,以教法引導眾生。
The activities of awakening and what must be done.菩提的事業及應當完成的任務。
Again and again he granted them fearlessness他一次又一次地賜予眾生無畏。
From the threats of water, deserts, and warfare.從水患、荒漠和戰爭的威脅中解救他們。
As he carried out these good deeds,當他執行這些善行時,
He was fearless and had reached awakening.他無畏且已證得菩提。
With a loving mind in composure,以慈悲心安住於禪定之中,
He terrified even the most powerful and horrifying demon. [F.118.b]他甚至令最強大和最可怕的魔感到恐懼。
With his knowledge of the ten powers he delighted Sāgara,以他十力的慧,使海歡喜,
Who immediately knelt on the ground.當即跪地叩拜。
Peaceful and free from fear,寂靜而無有恐懼,
He saluted the Well-Gone One with joined palms:他雙掌合十,向善逝頂禮:
“I salute the lord of existence!「我頂禮存在的主宰!
I salute the one who is free from anguish and fear!我禮敬那位遠離痛苦和恐懼的尊者!
I also will liberate beings from anguish and fear.我也將從痛苦和恐懼中解脫眾生。
I also will become a thus-gone one, a master free from anguish.”我也將成為一位如來,一位自由於苦惱的大師。
2.68Then the nāga king Golden Crown addressed the Blessed One in these melodious verses:
“Great sage, you have virtuous eyes and your senses are controlled.「偉大的聖者,你有善良的眼睛和控制良好的感官。」
You have crossed the ocean of existence and reached the other shore.你已經渡過了生死海,抵達了彼岸。
You have reached dry land and become a perfect being who has dried up craving.你已經到達乾地,成為了一個圓滿的修行者,乾涸了渴愛。
For the sake of beings, I request you to teach!為了眾生的緣故,我懇請您教導!
“No matter what, I will become a well-gone one,「無論如何,我都要成為善逝,
And abide by the teaching of the victorious one.並且遵奉勝者的教法。
Not even a thousand demons shall wear me out.即使一千個魔,也無法使我疲憊。
Please teach us what must be done!”「請為我們開示應當如何修行!」
The Buddha sat unmoving,佛陀安坐不動,
As the leaders of the nāgas made such requests of the Guide.當龍的首領們如此向導師提出請求時。
Knowing the thoughts of the leaders of the nāgas,了知龍王們的思想,
He taught while his mind had abandoned all affliction:他以已經捨棄一切煩惱的心而教導:
“With a good motivation one surely comes to possess the Dharma.「以善心動機,必然能夠獲得法。
Certainty must be gained with regard to the empty object.對於空性的對象必須獲得確定性。
Do not waver from the teaching that is victorious over existence,不要動搖於戰勝輪迴的教法。
And aspire to immeasurable awakening!”並立志追求無量菩提!
When the nāga Golden Crown, who possessed great miraculous abilities,當具有偉大神通力的龍金冠,
Heard the Buddha’s words, he had no doubt.聽聞佛陀的言語,他心中沒有疑。
He developed an unflinching resolve for awakening,他對菩提生起了堅定不移的決心,
And praised the one who has transcended all fears:並讚歎超越一切恐懼者。
“You have crossed the ocean of existence and arrived at dry land.「你已經渡過生死海,到達了安全的彼岸。」
You have no doubt and you have obtained an unmoving and stable state.你沒有疑,已經獲得了不動搖、穩固的境界。
Within existence, you sit firm with your retinue,你在生死海中與眷屬一起安穩地坐著,
Like the divine abodes on the king of mountains.如同國王山上的天宮一般。
“I take refuge in this steadfastness,「我皈依這份堅定不移,」
And pledge to become myself like an unmoving mountain.並誓願成為我自己像一座不動搖的山峰。
At that point, I will be beyond shaking,到那時,我將不可動搖。
But rest like an unmoving mountain.”但要安住如不動的山嶺一般。
The exalted one, who read his mind,那位能洞悉其心念的尊者,
Uttered this prophecy in a sweet-sounding tune: [F.119.a]用甜美的音調說出了這個預言:
“In the future, after eighty thousand eons,"未來在八萬劫之後,"
You will become a buddha.你將成為佛陀。
“You will become a victorious one through a pleasant path.「你將通過喜樂的道路成為勝者。」
Your name shall be most beautiful: Valgudarśanā.你的名號將是最為殊勝美妙的:妙見。
You will liberate billions of beings,你將解脫無數的眾生,
And establish them on the cool, pleasant, and peaceful path.”並將他們安住在清涼、喜樂、寂靜的道上。
When the nāga heard the Buddha’s words,當龍聽到佛陀的言語時,
He felt a limitless joy and inspiration,他感受到無限的喜和鼓舞。
Which cleared him of all disturbing emotions.這清淨了他一切的煩惱。
He then prostrated to the exalted guide of beings.他隨後向眾生的殊勝導師禮拜。
2.78Then the nāga king Utpala Eye addressed the Blessed One in these melodious verses:
2.78那時優鉢羅眼龍王用這些悅耳的偈頌向薄伽梵說道:
“Perfect being, tamer of others, boundless splendor!「完美的聖者,調伏他人的導師,無邊的光輝!
Your mind is peaceful and you have perfected peace.你的心境寂靜,你已圓滿成就寂靜。
In your liberation, you possess the peaceful qualities of tranquility.在你的解脫中,你具備止與寂靜的安樂特質。
Skilled in peace, your speech is that of a well-gone one.善於寂靜,你的言語是善逝的言語。
“Whatever your offspring, the bodhisattvas, do,「無論你的子嗣菩薩們做什麼,」
They delight in tranquility, rely on tranquility,他們喜樂於止,依靠止,
And become skilled in tranquility.而且變得善於止。
Omniscient one, quickly, destroy my doubt!”一切智者,快速地為我摧滅疑!
When that nāga had addressed the Victorious One,當那位龍向勝者稟告之時,
The Victorious One offered a teaching to King Utpala Eye:勝者向優曇鉢羅眼王傳授教法:
“Bodhisattvas train in beautiful tranquility,菩薩們修習美妙的止。
Which is virtuous karma.這是善業。
“Therefore, a skilled bodhisattva「因此,一位善巧的菩薩
Does not get distracted when engaged in activities.從事活動時不會分心散亂。
By relying on tranquility for millions of eons,通過依靠止的修持歷經百萬劫,
One gains sacred awakening and becomes a buddha, the perfect hero.證得神聖的菩提,成為佛陀,圓滿的英雄。
“Realizing awakening with a peaceful mind,「以寂靜的心證悟菩提,
The guide brings beings to peace.導師將眾生引領至寂靜。
As his mind is peaceful and undisturbed,因為他的心寂靜而不動搖,
He causes the afflictions of beings to settle and become peaceful.”他使眾生的煩惱得以平息,變得寂靜。
When the nāga Utpala Eye當龍優曼鉢羅眼
Heard the well-spoken words of the victorious one,聽聞了勝者所說的善妙言語,
All afflictions disappeared and his mind became peaceful,一切煩惱消除,他的心變得寂靜。
And he engendered the mind set on supreme awakening.並且他生起了趨向於無上菩提的心。
Basing his mind on tranquility,基於止的基礎來安住自己的心,
He engendered the mind of awakening and praised the Victorious One:他生起了菩提心並讚歎勝者:
“Thanks to you, I have realized tranquility!「多虧了你,我已經證得止!」
With a mind perfectly at ease, I will become a buddha!” [F.119.b]我以一顆完全安樂的心,將成為佛陀!
2.85Then the nāga king Nanda addressed the Blessed One in these melodious verses:
“Well-Gone One, you have realized tranquility.「善逝,您已證得了止。
Victorious One, perfect being, I ask you:勝者,完美的聖者,我請問你:
Since you abide in perfect awakening,既然您安住在圓滿的菩提中,
Perfect being, how should one practice special insight?”完美的聖者,應該如何修習毗婆舍那?
So Nanda asked the leader, who has his being under control.於是難陀請問那位已制伏自心的導師。
Perceiving the past existences of that nāga,觀察那龍的宿命通,
He understood that the nāga had accumulated virtuous karma.他明白那條龍積累了善業。
Thus, the leader, who has his being under control, replied:因此,能夠控制自己身心的導師回答說:
“In order to search for sacred wisdom, perfect awakening,「為了求取聖潔的慧,圓滿的菩提,
One must give, unstintingly and without miserliness,必須無吝嗇地、毫不保留地施捨。
One’s wealth and grains, and other bountiful objects,自己的財富和穀物,以及其他豐富的物品,
Including one’s spouse and even oneself.包括自己的配偶,甚至自己本身。
“Performing such wholesome actions,「進行這樣的善行,
One must bear great hardships.必須承受極大的苦難。
Then one will master sacred wisdom and become a victorious buddha.那樣一來,就會掌握神聖的慧,成為勝者佛陀。
That is the result of practicing insight.”那就是修持慧的果報。
2.89Then the nāga king Upananda addressed the Blessed One in these melodious verses:
2.89這時,跋難陀龍王以優美的偈頌向薄伽梵說道:
“I ask the guide of all beings,「我請問一切眾生的導師,
Through what actions should your offspring, the bodhisattvas,你的子嗣菩薩應當通過什麼樣的行為,
Practice the equality of tranquility and insight,修習止觀的平等性,
And attain the awakening of peace without disturbance?”而證得無擾亂的寂靜菩提?
Thus the nāga asked the guide,如是龍王向導師請問,
Who knows the genuine practice of tranquility and insight.誰知曉止觀的真正實踐。
Since the guide had become unimpeded in this practice,因為導師在這個修行中已經達到了無礙的境界,
He delivered this teaching of the well-gone ones:他宣說了善逝們的這項教法:
“When bodhisattvas are engaged in activity,「當菩薩們從事修行活動時,
They must rely equally on the strength of both of these practices.他們必須平等地依靠這兩種修行的力量。
In that case, for the sake of others, they will purify equally在這種情況下,為了他人的利益,他們將同樣地淨化
A quintillion realms.無數的領域。
“After many millions of eons they will awaken,經過許多百萬劫後,他們將會覺醒,
And take their seat in perfect realms.並在完美的領域中證得成就。
This result will be praised for millions of eons,這個結果將在數百萬個劫中受到讚揚,
Uninterruptedly by millions of buddhas.”將被無數的佛所不間斷地讚頌。
At that point, as the nāga king Upananda此時,龍王烏波難陀
Heard this praise of the equality of the vehicles,聽聞了這讚歎諸乘平等的言語,
A boundless joy and happiness arose in him,他心中生起了無邊的喜悅和樂。
And he engendered the mind set on perfect awakening.他因此生起了趨向圓滿菩提的心。
For the benefit of the world, the Buddha then gave a prophecy of awakening:為了利益世界,佛陀隨後給予了菩提的預言:
“In the future you will be a buddha, [F.120.a]「未來你將成為佛陀,
And your name shall be Victorious Guide with All-Seeing Eyes.你的名號將是遍見勝導師。
You will liberate billions of beings.”你將解脫無數眾生。
2.95Then the nāga king Anavatapta addressed the Blessed One in these melodious verses:
2.95那時無熱龍王以這些優美的偈頌向薄伽梵說道:
“Well-Gone One, please teach how your offspring should act,「善逝,請開示您的眷屬應當如何行持,」
As they strive to be of help for others’ sake,當他們為了幫助他人而努力奮進時,
And work untiringly to attain the highest awakening.並且不懈怠地努力以證悟至高的菩提。
Perfect and sacred man, please teach this!”「圓滿而神聖的人啊,請為我們開示吧!」
Thus the leader of men was asked by the nāga.於是那龍王請求人中領導者教導。
Knowing the nāga king’s mind,了知龍王的心意,
The sage was not shy to speak of past endeavors,聖者毫不羞怯地述說起過去的修行。
And thus he addressed the doubts of the nāga king:於是他排解了龍王的疑惑,說道:
“If one wishes to engage in peaceful awakening,「如果有人想要參與寂靜的菩提,
One’s actions must be gentle and unimpaired.自己的行為必須溫柔而無缺陷。
One must be free from harming both oneself and others,一個人必須不傷害自己和他人。
And be generous without miserliness—such is a victorious one.並且慷慨無吝嗇——這就是勝者。
“If one can act in such a fine way,「如果一個人能夠以這樣美好的方式行動,
One will be gentle and compassionate to any being人將會對任何眾生溫和與悲心相待。
Who longs for pleasure in saṃsāra.誰渴望在輪迴中獲得快樂。
By giving wealth to others, that summarizes the practice.通過布施財物給他人,這總結了修行的要義。
“If one can act in such a fine way,「如果一個人能夠以這樣美好的方式行動,
One will never feel any suffering of birth,將永遠不會感受到生的任何苦。
But always joyfully bring happiness to others.但始終都要歡喜地為他人帶來樂。
One will be free from negativity and join the abodes of peace.”就能遠離負面行為,進入寂靜的境地。
When the teacher had inspired the nāga in this way,當老師以這樣的方式啟發了這條龍時,
The nāga’s mind was filled with perfect happiness and joy.龍的心中充滿了圓滿的樂和喜。
Immediately he knelt on the ground,他立即跪在地上,
And praised the Victorious One in these verses:並以這些偈頌讚歎勝者:
“Gautama, you are unequaled in all worlds!「喬達摩,你在所有世界中無與倫比!
You outshine others; Well-Gone One, you are resplendent.你超越眾生,善逝啊,你光芒璀璨。
Everyone, including the gods, admires your face.包括天神在內的一切眾生,都讚歎欣賞你的面容。
With my palms joined, I take refuge in you.我合掌向你皈依。
“I engender the mind set upon supreme awakening.「我生起趣向無上菩提的心念。
Well-Gone One, just as you have wisdom,善逝,正如您具有慧,
And, Teacher, just as you have cleared away all doubts,而且,導師啊,就像您已經消除了一切疑惑,
May I hear your teaching and clear away all the world’s doubts!”願我聽聞你的教法,消除世界上一切的疑!
Then, considering immeasurable awakening,隨後,善逝思量著無量的菩提,
His teacher said with a joyful mind,他的導師以喜樂之心說道,
“To benefit the world you will become a guide—「為了利益世界,你將成為導師——
A supreme being known as Great Ruler.”一位稱為大主宰的最高存在。
2.104Then the nāga king Elarāvaṇa addressed the Blessed One in these melodious verses: [F.120.b]
“You are the supreme refuge in endless worlds!「您是無盡世界中最究竟的皈依!
Victorious One, I ask you the following to clear away my doubt:勝者,我向您請問以下問題,以消除我的疑惑:
Through what activity will a bodhisattva菩薩通過什麼樣的行為活動
Truly come to meet the Buddha?”真正地前往親見佛陀?
When the nāga king asked this of the protector of the world,當那龍王向世界的保護者提出這個問題時,
The guide gave this teaching to benefit the world:導師為利益世界而給予了這個教導:
“One should know the afflictions in others,一個人應該要認識他人內心的煩惱,
And also the gentle mind.”以及溫柔的心。
“Then, develop compassion to benefit others,「那麼,培養悲心以利益他人,」
And act for the sake of supreme awakening.為了至高的菩提而行動。
Thinking, ‘How will I meet the Victorious One?’心想:「我怎樣才能見到勝者呢?」
One must be skilled in means.必須善於方便法門。
“When victorious ones and well-gone ones pass into nirvāṇa,「當勝者與善逝進入涅槃時,
One must make boundless offerings at their relics.必須在勝者的舍利前作無邊的供養。
With a mind set upon liberation, one must make aspirations.以解脫之心為念,應當發起願。
“If one is able to engage in such fine activity,「如果一個人能夠從事這樣的殊勝行為,
One will always meet the Buddha.將能恆常遇見佛陀。
By worshiping the Victorious One,通過禮敬勝者,
One will reach the luminous joy of awakening.”就能證得菩提的光明喜樂。
Upon hearing the well-spoken words of the Buddha,聽聞佛陀善妙的言語之後,
The nāga Elarāvaṇa was delighted.龍瑜祇羅歡喜雀躍。
With limitless joy, he was delighted,他以無限的喜悅而歡喜,
And with a trusting mind he praised the Buddha:他以信心虔誠的心讚頌佛陀:
“Leader who tames beings, I prostrate to you!「調御眾生的領袖,我向您頂禮!
You clear away my uncertainty and doubt.你消除了我的不確定與疑惑。
I will engender this mind for the sake of awakening.我將為了菩提而發起這樣的心願。
In order to end suffering, I will become a buddha!”為了終結苦,我將成為佛陀!
The lord of men, who knew the thoughts知曉眾生心念的人中之尊
Of that nāga king, then gave a prophecy of his awakening:那龍王於是得到了菩提的預言:
“After eight hundred forty million eons of being engaged in activity,「經過八億四千萬劫的修行精進,」
You will become a buddha.你將成為佛陀。
“The name of this supreme being will be Liberator of All.「這位至高者的名號將是普渡眾生者。
He will liberate billions of beings.他將解脫無數眾生。
He will leave many relics,他將留下許多舍利。
And many beings will go to the higher realms.”許多眾生將往生善趣。
When the nāga heard the teacher’s words he was delighted,當那條龍聽到導師的言語時,他感到歡喜。
And praised the guide who benefits the world:並稱讚了造福世界的導師:
“You benefit beings greatly!「你對眾生的利益非常廣大!
I prostrate to the Buddha who brings an end to suffering!” [B12]我頂禮為眾生止盡苦難的佛陀!
2.114Then the nāga king Encompassing Son asked the Blessed One in these melodious verses: [F.121.a]
2.114於是龍王普賢向薄伽梵用這些優美的偈頌提出請問:
“For the sake of everyone, including the gods,「為了包括天神在內的所有眾生,」
I ask of the guide who benefits beings:我請問利益眾生的導師:
In the course of training, what deeds led you在修習的過程中,什麼樣的行為引導你
To realize what was not realized and become a victorious guide?”為了實現未曾實現之事,並成為勝利的導師?」
Encompassing Son inquired thus of the Victor,普賢向勝者如是請問,
Who, having dispelled all afflictions, replied,誰已經消除一切煩惱,作出回應,
“Virtuous deeds lead to pleasant results.「善業導向喜樂的果報。
Having subdued the afflictions I am known as ‘victorious.’我已經克服了煩惱,因此被稱為「勝者」。
“With utter admiration for all living beings「以最深的敬仰之心對待一切有情眾生」
And the Buddha, I came to understand the mind.我因此來到佛陀面前,得以理解心性。
When then I followed through in my actions,當我在行動中堅持貫徹時,
I became a victor, an eternal being.”我成為了勝者,一個永恆的存在。
When he heard the Victor’s words當他聽到勝者的言語時
He felt faith in all beings and prayed,他對所有眾生生起信,並且祈禱。
“Just as he was virtuous at that time,「就像他在那時一樣善良,
And formed aspirations, may I become the same.”並立下願,願我也能成就如此。
The protector of the world then prophesied:世界的保護者隨後做出預言:
“You will become a buddha, supreme among men.「你將成為佛陀,人中至尊。
As you then liberate billions of beings當你解救數十億的眾生時
And carry out your activity, you will be praised as a victor.”並且執行你的事業,你將被讚譽為勝者。
Delighted by what the Teacher had said,龍歡喜於導師所說的言語,
The nāga developed faith in the Buddha and praised him:龍對佛陀生起了信,並讚歎他:
“Homage to the Buddha who liberates beings!「敬禮解脫眾生的佛陀!」
Homage to the inconceivable Well-Gone One!”敬禮難以思議的善逝!
2.120Next the nāga king Kāla asked the Blessed One in these melodious verses:
2.120接著龍王時請薄伽梵,用這些優美的偈頌說:
“O great sage, unfathomable, supreme refuge,「尊貴的聖者,深不可測,最勝皈依,」
You are flawless and have attained supreme qualities,你無有過失,已證得無上功德,
You thwart with the menace of your ten powers,你用十力的威勢摧伏了,
And you dwell in your expertise in awakened peaceful action. I ask of you:而且您住於覺悟的寂靜行專門知識中。我向您請問:
“How do the gentle ones dispel the afflictions?「溫柔的修行者如何消除煩惱?
How does one train in the excellence of the victors?人應當如何修習勝者的殊勝品質?
How to abandon the domain of evil?如何捨棄邪惡的領域?
How to engage in the domain of the buddhas?”如何進入諸佛陀的境域?
The nāga asked the Blessed One thus,龍向薄伽梵提出了這樣的問題,
To teach what he clearly understood of the two paths:為了闡述他對兩條道路的清晰理解:
How to engage in the domain of the well-gone ones如何進入善逝的境域
And how to abandon the domain of evil.以及如何捨棄邪惡的域界。
As the nāga lord had inquired in this way,龍王如此詢問之後,
The Teacher was aware of his thoughts and replied,尊師了知了他的思想,因此作出回應,
“The unwise who entertain the idea of ‘beings’「不智慧的人執著於『有情眾生』的觀念
Are in the domain of kinship with darkness. [F.121.b]處於與黑暗的親緣境域中。
“Those whose minds do not so dwell, for whom there are no beings,「那些心不如此停留、心中沒有眾生觀念的人,
Are engaged in the domain of the all-seeing state.已沉浸於遍知的境域中。
They conquer the kinsmen of darkness他們征服了黑暗的眷屬
And achieve the peaceful state of unexcelled awakening.”並證得無上菩提的寂靜境地。
Delighted by the Teacher’s words,歡喜於導師的言語,
The nāga soon abandoned the domain of evil.那龍很快就捨棄了惡劣的領域。
Pursuing the domain of the all-seeing buddhas,追求遍知諸佛的境界,
He swiftly became victorious.他迅速地成為了勝者。
2.126Next the nāga king Gautama presented a question to the Blessed One in these melodious verses:
2.126接著龍王喬達摩用悅耳的偈頌向薄伽梵提出了一個問題:
“Eminent helmsman, I ask you:「尊貴的舵手,我請問您:
How, Guide, should your child practice導師啊,您的弟子應該如何修持
In order to cut off rebirth as a nāga, and instead為了截斷作為龍的輪迴,反而
Produce the sprout of the way of the buddhas?”產生佛陀之道的萌芽?
When the nāga had asked this, the Well-Gone One,當龍提出這個問題時,善逝
Who was aware of his thoughts, responded,了知他的心念,做出了回應,
“The Victor’s children act although there are no beings.「勝者的孩子們行動,雖然沒有眾生。」
They never dwell in the mind of awakening.他們永遠不住於菩提心。
“That is the realization of emptiness.「那就是空的體悟。」
The wise give up signs and wishes.智者放棄標相和願望。
The sagacious dwell without reference point.智慧者無所依止而住。
This is how to produce the sprout of the buddha’s higher knowledge.”這就是生起佛陀的殊勝慧的方法。
The Guide’s words delighted the nāga,導師的言語令龍歡喜,
Who then dwelt without reference point,那麼誰住於無所依處,
And cut the tight cord of evil that bound him.並斷斷了束縛他的邪惡之繩。
The nāga then abided by the way of the buddhas.那龍隨後遵行諸佛之道。
The Sage of the World then prophesied his awakening:世尊隨後預言他將證得菩提:
“In the future you will become a buddha,「未來你將成為佛陀,
Your name, Victorious Liberation, renowned everywhere.你的名號「勝解脫」,將聞名於十方。
You will liberate beings under evil influence.”你將解脫受邪惡影響的眾生。
The Guide’s words pleased the nāga,導師的言語令龍歡喜,
Who brought his palms together and paid the Buddha homage:他合掌向佛陀頂禮。
“Since you have taught the path, I will follow the Buddha.「既然您已開示了道諦,我將皈依佛陀。」
Homage to you, liberating field, supreme among men!”敬禮於你,解脫的福田,人中至尊!
2.132Then the nāga king Kambala asked the following of the Blessed One in these melodious verses:
2.132隨後,龍王堪巴拉以優美的偈頌向薄伽梵提出以下問題:
“Powerful and immaculate as moonlight,「威力無比如月光皎潔,
I ask you, O self-arisen, supreme man,我請問您,無自之主、至尊人天,
How should a child of the Guide practice導師的孩子應該如何修持
So as to engage with and be born into altruism?” [F.122.a]為了能夠投身利他主義並生起利他心?」
“If he pursues emptiness and absence of wishes,「如果他追求空和無願,
Becomes free of the aggregates devoid of marks,遠離無相的五蘊而得解脫,
And comprehends the space-like Dharma,並領悟似虛空的法。
The child will follow in the father’s footsteps.”孩子將追隨父親的腳步。
Delighted by the Teacher’s explanation,因為導師的闡釋而歡喜,
He engendered a mind-state free of reference point.他生起了一種無所執著的心境。
Then the Sage of the World prophesied his awakening:接著,世尊為他預言了菩提的成就:
“Practicing in this manner「以此方式修習
“And purifying supreme realms,「並淨化最殊勝的世界,
In the future you will become a buddha將來你將成為佛陀
Who is more famous than the moon,誰比月亮更聞名遠播,
And liberate beings who roam in existence.”並且解救在輪迴中流轉的眾生。
When the awakening of the nāga named Kambala當名叫堪巴拉的龍菩提覺醒時
Was thus prophesied by the wise Son of the Śākyas,如此被釋迦族的智慧之子所預言,
He became thrilled and overjoyed,他變得歡喜踊躍。
And praised the liberator of all beings:並讚歎一切眾生的解脫者:
“Great sage, I take you as my refuge.「偉大的聖者,我皈依您。
I have no doubt that you are a buddha.我毫無疑慮地相信您是佛陀。
You hold the lamp for those in darkness你為那些在黑暗中的人們舉起明燈
And show the way for the sightless.”並為盲者指示道路。
2.138Next the lord of nāgas named Dhṛtarāṣṭra asked the Blessed One in these melodious verses:
2.138接著,名叫持國的龍王向薄伽梵用優美的韻文提出了這些問題:
“O Guardian, great sage, doctor who gives sight「尊貴的守護者,偉大的聖者,賜予光明的醫者啊
To the eyes of blind beings, I ask you:我問你,對於眼盲的眾生,請為他們指示道路。
Please say, O lord of humans, what allows one to traverse the path請說啊,人中之尊,什麼能使人走上道諦
Of freedom from the world, and reach the state of peace?”從世界的束縛中獲得自由,並達到寂靜的境地?」
The teacher of the path to liberation who possesses the strength of the ten powers,具備十力的解脫道的教導者,
The guardian of the world and lord of humans, then replied,世界的守護者與人的主宰,隨後回答說,
“He who calms the path of suffering that has so long been tread,「他以寂靜平息長久以來所踐踏的苦之道,
And pacifies cyclic existence, will clearly reach nirvāṇa.”而且寧靜輪迴的人,將清晰地到達涅槃。
When the nāga king heard of the peaceful path from the Teacher,龍王從導師那裡聽聞寂靜之道時,
He felt genuine compassion for those who are suffering.他對那些遭受苦難的眾生產生了真摯的悲。
The nāga king gained a deep yearning for awakening,龍王對菩提生起了深切的渴望。
And said, “I will become a guardian of beings and gain the strength of the ten powers.”並說:「我將成為眾生的守護者,並獲得十力的力量。」
He who possesses the qualities of the ten powers then prophesied of the nāga lord:具有十力品質者,遂為龍王授記:
“You will become a lion among men, an adversary of extremists.「你將成為人中獅子,極端主義者的對手。
With the sublime words of the Well-Gone One, you will guide and liberate藉由善逝崇高的言語,你將導引並解脫眾生。
An infinite, unfathomable number of beings wandering in cyclic existence.” [F.122.b]無量無邊的眾生在輪迴中流轉。
When the nāga king heard the Teacher’s sublime words當龍王聽到導師的殊勝言語時
He joyfully brought his ten fingertips together,他歡喜地將十指併合在一起,
And out of respect for the lord of men, the protector of the world, the great sage,並且出於對人類之主、世界保護者、偉大聖者的尊敬,
He praised him with these unmistaken words:他用這些不誤的言語讚頌他:
“Supreme refuge, with your extraordinary mind, apex of peerless wisdom,「至高的皈依,您以非凡的心智,無與倫比的慧的頂峰,
You are aware of the infinite thoughts of beings,您瞭解眾生無窮無盡的念想。
Their virtuous deeds, and the duration of that virtue—他們的福德,以及那福德的持續時間——
Thus, lord of men, you are renowned throughout the world.”因此,人中之尊,您在世界各地享有盛名。
2.144Next the nāga king Golden Throat inquired thus of the Blessed One in these melodious verses:
2.144其後龍王金喉用優美的偈頌向薄伽梵詢問道:
“You who has the strength of the ten powers and possesses the power of great strength,"你具足十力的力量,而且擁有巨大的力,"
Your virtuous mind, radiant, illuminates and is bereft of any evil.你那具有道德的心,光明的,照亮一切且沒有任何惡的。
Victorious over existence, with superior intellect you truly understand beings—勝者啊,超越輪迴,以殊勝的智慧,你真實地理解眾生——
O Victor, please explain what immaculate, virtuous practice is.勝者啊,請為我開示什麼是清淨無垢、具足美德的修行。
“You who is flawless and supreme among men, how should your child practice「你這位在人中無缺陷、最殊勝的聖者,你的弟子應當如何修習
To gain the realization of the undisturbed, unshakably wise,為了獲得不動搖、堅固慧的證悟,
The knowledge of the unfathomably many flawless victors,無數清淨勝者的慧,
And the eyes of realization with which the Victor’s heirs benefit beings?以及那能夠利益眾生的勝者傳人的證悟眼?
“Your intelligence is unfathomable; you are the master of learned gods and humans,「你的智慧深不可測;你是學識淵博的天神和人的主宰,
Surrounded by unfathomable millions of victors.被無數難以測量的勝者所圍繞。
O wise one, please think at this time of the benefit for countless beings.”智者啊,請您此時思念無數眾生的利益。
The nāga thus requested the master of the ten powers.龍王於是請求十力的主人。
“With a mind that is unmistaken and pure, carefully analyze this.「以無誤且清淨的心念,謹慎地分析這個。」
My supreme children follow the Victor and achieve the end of old age and death.我至高的孩子們跟隨勝者,實現了老死的終結。
The victors serve them and they are flawless and immaculate.勝者們侍奉他們,他們沒有缺陷,清淨無染。
They understand the suffering of unfathomably many beings, and free them.”他們理解無數眾生的苦,並將他們解脫。
When the lord of nāgas heard about the cessation of old age and death,當龍王聽聞老死滅諦時,
Spoken of by the master with the intelligence of the ten powers, he was delighted.由具有十力智慧的教主所說,他感到歡喜。
With his mind set on awakening and helping beings, he praised the supreme Victor,他以菩提心和利益眾生的心態,讚歎至高無上的勝者,
The one who benefits beings with the mind-set of a guide:以導師之心為眾生謀利的那一位:
“You eliminate so many beings’ darkness, clouded vision, and cataracts,「您消除了眾多眾生的黑暗、朦朧的視野和白內障,」
Eradicating their suffering. Thoroughly dispelling their darkness,消除他們的苦。徹底驅散他們的黑暗,
Clouded vision, and cataracts with the ambrosial path,以甘露之道消除了模糊的視界和白內障,
With your flawless vision you teach virtue throughout the ten directions. [F.123.a]以你圓滿無缺的智慧,在十方遍處教導福德。
“You have come to a house similar to the nāga lord’s gold and silver mansion.「你已來到一座如同龍王黃金白銀樓閣般的宮舍。
Extremely realized, you possess boundless qualities.你已經圓滿成就,具足無邊的功德。
The eyes on your face shine with intelligence, like a thousand light rays.你面容上的眼睛閃耀著慧光,如同千道光芒。
Your great splendor of knowledge is unconfused, undisturbed, and irreproachable.你那偉大的智慧光輝清晰明淨、不為所動、無可非議。
“I praise you who has the light of the ten powers, with the words of beings.「我以眾生的言辭,讚歎您具有十力光明的勝者。
Supreme Victor, I will awaken to blissful buddhahood至高的勝者,我將證悟到喜樂的佛果
And then dispel the limitless suffering of wandering beings然後驅除流轉眾生無盡的苦
Stricken by the invisible sufferings of aging and death—I will free them!”被老死的隱蔽苦所折磨——我將解脫他們!
“Clearing away bliss, peace, and immense and immaculate peace,「超越喜樂、寂靜,以及巨大的無漏寂靜,
I will awaken by following the path of peace.我將藉由遵循寂靜之道而得以覺醒。
As realized by one hundred victors, I will immobilize如同一百位勝者所證悟的一樣,我將使其喪失力量

2.153Then the nāga king named Nīlagrīva asked of the Blessed One in the form of a song in verse:

“Supreme Teacher, steersman for the untamed, I ask you:「至尊導師,調御未馴之人,我請問您:
O Guide, how should your child practice導師啊,您的弟子應當如何修習
To become free of unwholesomeness, at peace, stainless,為了遠離不善,達到寂靜,無有瑕疵,
And free of affliction, and awaken to true buddhahood?遠離煩惱,證悟真正的佛果?
“When, O hero, your progeny hears「英勇的導師啊,當你的後代聽聞
What the Guide says for the sake of beings,導師為了眾生而說的話,
I will become free of unwholesomeness, and both I and others我將擺脫不善行為,無論是我自己或其他眾生
Will become buddhas, as doubts about awakening withdraw.”將成為佛,因為對菩提的疑惑消退了。
When the nāga Nīlagrīva asked this question當龍青頸提出這個問題時
He whose mind is without attachment to the entire world,心中對整個世界沒有貪著的人,
Who attained the power of not being afraid of anything,誰獲得了不畏懼任何事物的力量,
And who is steadfast in the speech of a guide, replied,堅定於導師之言而作回應,
“My children have no attachment for the three realms;「我的孩子們對三界沒有貪著;
They carry out actions to benefit beings.他們的行為是為了利益眾生。
They are not born for the sake of the desire realm,他們不是為了欲界而出生的,
Nor the form or formless realms.也不是為了色界或無色界而出生。
“The realm of nirvāṇa, immeasurable and unconditioned—「涅槃的境界,無量而無為——
It ends and ceases the suffering of all.它結束並止息了一切的苦。
Upholding this, they are not polluted by the world.他們秉持這樣的修持,不被世界所染污。
They meditate on the victorious lord of victors.他們靜坐思惟勝中之勝者。
“As they carry out such positive actions,「當他們進行這樣的善行時,
They act without pollution or fear, [F.123.b]他們的行為無有污垢也無有恐懼,
Living without harming themselves or others,不傷害自己也不傷害他人地生活。
Until they fully awaken to unexcelled buddhahood.直到他們圓滿覺悟無上佛果。
“Such ripening is in tune with the initial actions:「這樣的成熟果報與最初的行為相應:
Through immense hardships they awaken to buddhahood.經過無量的苦行,他們覺悟成佛。
Yet this is invisible to sentient beings然而這對眾生來說是看不見的。
Like gods, nāgas, humans, and rākṣasas.”就像天神、龍、人和羅剎一樣。
The mighty nāga Nīlagrīva強大的龍青頸
Was delighted by the omniscient Buddha’s words.對一切智佛陀的話語感到歡喜。
He brought together his ten fingers and bowed his head他合十雙手,低頭禮敬。
In homage to the Guide, the lamp of the world:恭敬禮敬導師,世界的光明。
“I thus take refuge in the foremost of humans.我如此皈依人中最殊勝者。
This child will follow after his father,這個孩子將會追隨他的父親,
Reach the end, triumphant, awaken to buddhahood,到達究竟,勝利地覺悟佛果,
And liberate beings by destroying their suffering with the Dharma.”並以法滅除眾生的苦,而解救他們。
The World Adept then prophesied his awakening:世尊隨後預言他將得到菩提:
“In the future, you will awaken.「將來,你會獲得菩提。
Your name, All-Seeing, will be renowned in all directions.你的名字,遍見者,將在四方揚名。
You will liberate beings from wandering existence.”你將把眾生從輪迴流轉中解脫出來。
2.163Then the nāga king Terrifying asked the Blessed One in the form of a song in verse:
“Incredible steersman for the untamed,「不可思議的調御師啊,您馴伏了那些難以調伏的眾生,
O Teacher, I ask you what deeds you performed尊敬的導師,我請問您究竟修行了什麼善業
Such that when the Victor surveys the land,勝者遍觀察大地時,
Countries appear before you?”國土在你面前顯現?
The Victor with his conviction in the Dharma, replied.勝者以對法的信心回答。
With his omniscient wisdom, aware of his thoughts,以其一切智的慧,了知他的心念,
Giving rise to an extraordinary mind-set,生起了非凡的心境,
The foremost of humans then explained,最殊勝的人於是開示了,
“By carrying out actions that lead to happiness,「通過實行能夠導向樂的行為,
And by bringing the past to mind again and again,並且反覆地將過去的事憶起於心,
I know what comes from their ripening;我知道從它們的成熟而產生的結果。
In that vision appear places.”在那個景象中出現的地方。
Upon hearing the Victor’s sublime words,聽到勝者至高無上的言語,
The nāga king was overjoyed,龍王歡喜無比,
Felt the spiritual delight of the noble ones,體驗到聖者的靈性喜悅,
And, overcoming his pride, paid homage to the Buddha.克服了自己的慢心,向佛陀頂禮致敬。
2.167Then the nāga king Manasvin asked the Blessed One in the form of a song in verse:

Guide who benefits the world, I ask you:導師啊,利樂世界者,我請問你:

That you can remain in tranquility according to your wish?”您能夠按照您的願望而保持止呢?」
The Victor and Guardian of the World responded.勝者與世界的守護者作出了回應。
The time for the nāga to be tamed had come,龍被調伏的時機已經到來,
So in order to benefit all beings,因此,為了利益所有眾生,
And having vanquished the force of Māra, the Guide explained,勝者克服了魔的力量後,導師為眾生解說。
“When I was training in the past「當我在過去進行修行時
I never had thoughts that were improper or unfriendly,我從未有過不當或不友善的念頭,
And always remained in tranquility,並且始終安住於止。
Practicing that way for a long time.長期地這樣修習。
“Similarly, at reliquaries of the victors「同樣地,在勝者的舍利塔處
I arranged and offered garlands and jewels.我安排並供奉花環和珠寶。

Hearing the words of the great sage,聽聞偉大聖者的言語,
Manasvin the nāga was delighted.慧念龍王歡喜踴躍。
In a state of immeasurable happiness, he joyfully sat他處於無量的樂中,歡喜地坐著
In front of the Teacher and praised him in verse:在導師面前讚頌他,用偈頌說道:
“You pacify the afflictions that arise in beings「您息滅了眾生心中生起的煩惱
And teach them how to calm their minds.並教導他們如何平靜心念。
O Sage, you engage with the world while free of affliction.聖者啊,您在世界中運作,卻遠離煩惱。
I bow to the one whose mind is calm as moonlight.”我頂禮那位心如月光般寧靜的聖者。
2.174Then the nāga king Vairocana asked the Blessed One in the form of a song in verse:

“What actions did you perform in the past,「你過去曾經造作什麼業行,
O Sage, that made your body so untainted?尊聖者,是什麼行為使您的身體如此清淨無染?
Please explain these matchless and astounding things—請為我解說這些無可比擬和令人驚歎的事物——
Once I’ve heard, I’ll practice virtuous deeds!”「我一旦聽聞,便會修持福德的行為!」
Thus Vairocana, a nāga in pursuit of virtue,毗盧遮那龍王,追求福德的龍,
Asked the Guardian of the World,世界的守護者詢問道,
Who replied, with sweet and pleasant words他以甘言妙語回答道:
With eight qualities, to remove all afflictions:具備八種特質,以消除一切煩惱:
“When I was pursuing awakening in the past,「當我過去正在追求菩提時,
I never had an improper thought.我從未有過不淨的念頭。
I never thought anything wicked,我從不曾想過任何邪惡的念頭,
But over and over acted out of utmost love.但卻一次又一次地出自最深層的慈心而行動。
“Because I did such virtuous things,「因為我做了這樣的善行,
When I reached unexcelled awakening, [F.124.b]當我證得無上菩提時,
My body as the foremost human, victor, and sage,我的身體作為最殊勝的人、勝者、聖者,
And even my clothes, have never been blemished.”我的衣服也從未受到污垢。
Hearing how the Victor had gathered virtuous actions,聽聞勝者已積聚善行,
Vairocana the nāga was delighted.毗盧遮那龍感到歡喜。
Bringing his ten fingers together, he bowed他將十指合掌,向勝者頂禮。
His head to the Victor’s feet.他將頭頂禮向勝者的雙足。
“Excellent! O Victor, you have already gone to the end.「善哉!勝者啊,你已經到達了究竟。
You benefit in a vast and infinite way.您以廣大無邊的方式利益一切眾生。
You liberate every being who is stricken with suffering你解救了每一個被苦所困的眾生
And who takes pleasure in existence.及樂於存在的眾生。
“You are the doctor of knowledge for poisoned beings,「您是被毒害的眾生的慧醫。
Providing the remedy to cure beings’ poison,提供療藥來治癒眾生的毒害,
Eventually bringing them to nirvāṇa as if putting out a fire.最終將他們引導至涅槃,如同撲滅火焰一般。
Thus do I bring my palms together and take refuge.”「就這樣,我合掌皈依。」
2.181Then the nāga king Haughty One asked the Blessed One in the form of a song in verse:

“O Guide, what deeds did you perform"導師啊,你做了什麼善業
So that you gained such firm and utterly flat feet?使得你獲得如此堅固與完全平坦的雙足?
To hear an answer will bring me joy,聽聞您的答覆將令我生起喜。
So please tell me, foremost of humans.”所以請您告訴我,人中之首。」
Thus did the nāga king Haughty One ask龍王傲慢者如此提問:
The Guide and Knower of the World.導師和世間智者。
Then the nāga king was delighted於是龍王感到欣喜
By this beautiful verse:通過這優美的偈頌:
“I achieved utter discipline in my conduct.「我在行為中修習了完全的律。」
I also trained in utter discipline in conduct.我也修習了究竟完備的行為律儀。
Because I performed such virtuous deeds,因為我執行了這樣的善行,
I touch the ground with flat feet.”我用平足接觸地面。
Thus did the Omniscient One then explain.就這樣,一切智者隨後做了解釋。
The nāga Viraja was delighted,龍無垢歡喜雀躍,
His mind filled with immeasurable joy.他的心充滿了無量的喜。
He then paid homage to the foremost of humans:他隨即向人中之首頂禮。
“Excellent! Luminous Victor, you have overcome flaws,「善哉!光明勝者,你已克服缺陷,
And vanquished afflictions and the habits for them.消除了煩惱和煩惱的習氣。

That led you, O Guide, to achieve knowledge of what is impossible?”哪些行為使你,導師啊,證得了知不可能智?
“When I was practicing in the past,「我在過去修行時,」
I carried out deeds that led to happiness我進行了導致樂的業行
With my body, my speech, and even my mind.我用身體、言語,甚至心念。
None of my actions ever led to pain.我所有的行為都不曾導致痛苦。
“With pleasure, saturated by virtue,「以樂滿足於福德,」
I refined away all faults of the path of what is impossible我淨化了不可能之道上的一切過失
With the path of the ten virtuous actions,以十善行之道,
And conquered all afflictions related to the impossible.”並且克服了所有與不可能相關的煩惱。

The Thus-Gone One fully knows all beings.如來圓滿了知一切眾生。
When the Guide had answered,當導師作出回答時,
Mahāprabha the nāga felt joy and delight.大光龍王感到喜悅和歡喜。
Thrilled, in a state of unfathomable elation,歡欣踴躍,陷入難以測度的喜樂狀態之中,
He paid homage to the One with Transcendent Qualities:他向具有出世間品質的那一位頂禮。
“You with calm mind who has conquered doubts,「心境寂靜已克服疑惑者,
Who has crossed the swamp and reached dry land,已經越過沼澤並到達乾地的聖者,
And as a great sage crossed over, now liberates beings.如同偉大的聖者已經越度,如今解脫眾生。
Just as the sun dispels the darkness,如同太陽驅散黑暗一樣,
“Shines on, and illuminates forms,照耀著,並照亮諸種形相,
So too does the Guide’s mind, liberated,導師的心靈亦如是,已得解脫,
Put an end to beings’ abundant suffering—終止眾生無邊的苦——
I bow to the physician who grants eyesight!”我頂禮賜予眼睛的醫生!
2.194Then the nāga king Pratāpana asked the Blessed One in the form of a song in verse:
2.194那時龍王威力向薄伽梵以偈頌的形式提出問題:
“Golden Victor, what deeds did you perform「黃金勝者,你過去做了什麼行為
That led you to steadfastly penetrate knowledge of the three times?使您得以堅定不移地洞察三時的慧?
I ask you this, you who have space-like wisdom—我向您請問,您具有虛空般的慧——
Guide of beings, please explain this to me.”眾生的導師,請為我解釋這個。
The one with unhindered knowledge, his mind free of attachment,具無礙智者,心中無有貪著,
Who had cut through apprehension and eliminated doubt,已經切斷了恐懼,消除了疑,
The self-arisen victor was utterly aware [F.125.b]自生的勝者完全覺知了一切。

With genuine tribute, he praised the Victor, the foremost of humans:他以誠摯的禮敬,讚頌勝者,最殊勝的人。
“You perceive the three times as having the same character,「你了知三世具有相同的特性,
And you understand karma and its ripening.而且你理解業及其成熟果報。
You understand beings’ unique types of happiness.你理解眾生各自獨特的樂。

2.201Then the nāga king Bali asked the Blessed One in the form of a song in verse:
“Foremost of humans, you who have supreme and infinite knowledge,「人中最勝者,具有至高無盡的慧,
Flawless guardian, your mind utterly pure,無瑕的守護者,你的心完全清淨,
In order to quickly dispel my apprehensions and swiftly為了迅速遣除我的憂慮,趕快地
Slay my doubts, will the Well-Gone One explain:消除我的疑惑,善逝願否為我解說:
“What deeds did you perform in the past as a god and human?「你過去身為天神和人時,做了什麼樣的功德?
How did you gain such knowledge?你是如何獲得這樣的慧?
How did you achieve unsurpassed awakening?你是如何證得無上菩提的?
I present you my doubts—please do explain!”我向你呈上我的疑惑——請為我解說!
As the nāga asked the Victor, the definite embodiment當龍向勝者提出疑問時,這位確定的化身
Of the knowledge of the ten powers, he promptly replied,薄伽梵已得十力之慧,即刻作答,
“I first thought, ‘How should I engage in human behavior「我最初思想,『我應當如何從事人的行為
And with a virtuous outlook pursue awakening?並以善良的見解追求菩提?
“ ‘How can I practice with a joyful mind?「我如何能以喜悅的心來修習呢?
How can I understand the way all beings are affected by suffering,我應該如何理解所有眾生都被苦所影響的方式,
And how they end up falling to the lower realms,他們如何墮入惡趣,

Then the Great Sage trained as a novice,然後那位大聖者作為沙彌進行修行,
Giving away my head, eyes, and flesh,捨棄我的頭顱、眼睛和血肉,
Heroically traversing the path of the well-gone ones.英勇地踐行善逝的道諦。

“With these roots of virtue as a basis,「以這些善根為基礎,

Over one quintillion eons經過一百萬兆劫
I taught the supreme path to those who were lost.我為迷失的眾生教導了無上之道。
“Training thus in the practices of great beings,我就這樣訓練自己,修習偉大聖者的實踐,
I perceived my past actions as a human.我認知我身為人時的過往行為。
Aware that actions are performed like in a dream,瞭解到諸行如夢幻般進行,

And praised the Victor in order to achieve peaceful awakening:並讚歎勝者以成就寂靜菩提:

And in the darkness reach peaceful awakening.”在黑暗中達到寂靜的菩提。
2.214Then the nāga king Mahāmegha asked the Blessed One in the form of a song in verse:

“You with ten powers who liberates beings,您具足十力解救眾生,
Self-arisen Guide, I ask you this:自現導師,我請問您:
How should a child of the Teacher strive一個教法的追隨者應當如何精進
To reach peaceful, flawless, supreme awakening?” [F.126.b]才能證得寂靜、無缺、至高的菩提?」
The Great Sage who has limitless qualities具有無邊功德的大聖者
And supreme wisdom, then explained to his son而後向他的兒子講述無上的慧
How a bodhisattva achieves unexcelled awakening菩薩如何證得無上菩提
Through the power of effortful diligence:通過精進的力量:
“Let me describe briefly how in the past,「讓我簡要地說明,過去時候
When I was practicing for awakening,當我在修行菩提時,
I applied diligent force for the sake of beings我為了眾生而施展精進的力量
And through the force of diligence reached awakening.並通過精進的力量證得了菩提。
“In the past when I was a human,在過去當我還是人的時候,
The lord of the human world was named King Power Holder.人道世界的主宰名叫力持王。
He had the seven precious things, and children他擁有七種珍寶,以及許多子女
Numbering one million who were his offspring.數量達一百萬位,都是他的子嗣。

And there was a buddhafield called Lord of Rabbits,有一個佛土名叫兔主,

Whose name, Glorious Jewel, was known throughout the world.其名號光寶,遍聞於世界。
“The supreme human’s community of hearers「至尊人類的聲聞眾
Numbered eighty million.其數量達到八千萬。
The supreme Well-Gone One’s descendent followers至高善逝的傳承弟子們
Were free of afflictions such as hatred and arrogance.都已遠離仇恨和傲慢等煩惱。
“The supreme human’s bodhisattvas「至高的人類的菩薩們
Then also numbered eighty million.當時也有八千萬位。
They had practiced with unfathomably many victors他們已經跟無數的勝者修習過。
And were to attain awakening for the sake of beings.並將為了眾生的利益而證得菩提。
“One of the Guide’s bodhisattvas導師的一位菩薩
Was named User of Evil.名為惡用者。
He was a great sage who conquered the force of evil他是一位偉大的聖者,克服了惡的力量。
And served as chief of the community.並在社區中擔任領導者。
“At that time there was also a god「那時也有一位天神
Named Obstinate Force of Evil, who made obstacles名叫執著惡力,製造各種障礙
For the Guide and foremost Victor when he was about to當導師與勝者即將
Attain supreme awakening, so that he would not reach it.達成無上菩提,使他無法成就。
“Throughout the whole earth with all its qualities,「遍及整個大地及其所有特質,

Fine, replete with sublime qualities,美妙殊勝,圓滿具足崇高的品質,

“The color of their faces was stolen from the flawless moon;「他們的面容色澤宛如無瑕的月光所賦予;
They smiled and uttered pretty words.他們面帶微笑,說出悅耳的言詞。
Their way of walking was beautiful, like supreme elephants in rut.他們的行走方式美妙優雅,就像發情的至高象寶一樣。

“ ‘Hear our honest words「聽聽我們的誠實言語
And do not spread the Victor’s teachings!’不要傳播勝者的教法!
Then magically emanated donkeys appeared,隨後幻化而生的驢子出現了,
Some with one head and some with two,有的長著一個頭,有的長著兩個頭,
“And rākṣasas howling blaringly.「還有羅剎發出刺耳的吼叫聲。
Some were holding spears and lances,有些羅剎持著長槍和矛。
Some carrying mountains,有的扛著山嶺,
And others irately brandishing snakes.還有的則憤怒地揮舞著蛇。
“They all made loud noises in front of him.他們都在他面前發出巨大的聲響。
Some manifested in the form of yakṣas,有些顯現為夜叉的形相,
With single or double bodies and three arms,具有單身或雙身及三臂者,
Or quadruple bodies with one arm.或四個身體只有一隻手臂。
“Then some manifested with one body, [F.127.b]「那時有些現身為單一身體,
Then some manifested with four heads,隨後有些現身時具有四個頭顱,
Then some manifested with single bodies,隨後有些顯現為單一身體,
Terrifying, with faces可怖的面容
“Of donkeys, goats, cats, and tigers,有的驢子、山羊、貓和老虎的
Each making its own sound.各自發出自己的聲音。
The donkey heads bleated like goats;驢頭發出山羊一樣的叫聲;
The goat heads brayed like donkeys,羊頭發出驢子的叫聲,
“Some goats roared like elephants or neighed like horses.「有些山羊發出象寶般的吼聲,或發出馬寶般的嘶鳴聲。
Certain donkeys made all sorts of sounds.某些驢子發出了各種各樣的聲音。
Some goats made all types of sounds as well;有些山羊也發出各種各樣的聲音;
Countless terrifying sounds were cried.無數可怖的聲音被發出來。
“Then in an attempt to approach the Well-Gone One,「於是為了接近善逝,
Elephant heads shouted countless insults,象寶的頭顱發出無數的辱罵聲。
While other elephants made donkey sounds,其他象寶發出驢子的叫聲,
As did horses and elephants.馬寶和象寶也是如此。
“Although they made a plethora of sounds,「雖然他們發出了眾多的聲音,
Not a pore on the Well-Gone One’s body moved.善逝身上沒有任何一個毛孔移動。
Horses roared like elephants,馬寶咆哮如象寶。
And monkeys neighed like horses.猴子鳴叫如同馬的嘶鳴。
“Although monkeys made countless sounds,「儘管猴子發出無數聲音,
Not a pore on the Well-Gone One’s body flinched.善逝的身體上沒有一個毛孔出現過抖動。
Lions barked like foxes,獅子吠如狐狸,
Donkeys mooed, and birds neighed.驢子發出牛鳴聲,鳥兒發出馬嘶聲。
“But they could not affect the Guide,「但他們無法影響導師,
Or even make a pore on his body flinch.也無法讓導師身上的一個毛孔顫動。
Then tigers squealed like pigs,那時老虎發出像豬一樣的尖叫聲,
And cows and birds hissed like snakes.牛群和鳥類發出了蛇一樣的嘶鳴聲。
“But they could not affect the Guide,「但是牠們無法影響導師,
Or even make any disturbance for him.或者甚至無法對導師造成任何干擾。
Bulls roared like lions;公牛咆哮如獅子;
Cats and foxes squealed like pigs.貓和狐狸發出豬一樣的尖叫聲。
“And although buffaloes growled like tigers,「而且儘管水牛咆哮如猛虎,
They could not disturb the Knower of the World.它們都無法擾亂世間智者。
Cows made tens of millions of infinite牛發出了千萬無盡的

Not even a pore on the Benefiter of the World flinched.世間的利益者連一個毛孔都沒有顫動。
Hyenas cried like garuḍas,豺狼哭叫如迦樓羅。
While elephants neighed like horses.象寶嘶鳴如馬寶。
“But they could not affect the Guide,「但他們無法動搖導師,」
Or even create any disturbance for him.也無法對他造成任何擾亂。
Garuḍas cooed like cuckoos, [F.128.a]迦樓羅發出杜鵑的鳴叫聲,
While certain parrots bawled like calves,當某些鸚鵡發出像小牛一樣的叫聲時,
“And others made real parrot calls.「還有其他鳥類發出真正的鸚鵡叫聲。
Jīvaṃjīvaka birds sang their songs,命命鳥唱著牠們的歌聲,
Kalaviṇka birds made their own cries—迦陵頻伽鳥發出自己的叫聲——
In the darkness of night came words of deference.在夜晚的黑暗中傳來恭敬的言語。
“Lovely peacock calls were heard,「美妙的孔雀鳴叫聲傳來,
As were the cries of Cañcā.舍勒鳥的鳴叫聲也是如此。
Calves spoke in tones of reverence,小牛用恭敬的聲調說話,
And kalaviṇka birds made lovely calls.迦陵頻伽鳥發出悅耳的鳴聲。
“Wolves howled their harsh cries—「狼群發出刺耳的嗥叫——
Still, the Victor’s mind was not distracted.然而,勝者的心念未曾散亂。
Snakes roared like elephants,蛇吼聲如象寶,
And elephants hissed like snakes.象寶發出蛇鳴般的聲音。
“And yet they could not affect the Guide,「然而它們卻無法影響導師,
Or even cause him any disturbance.或者對導師造成任何困擾。
Geese roared like lions,鵝吼如獅。
Chickens screamed like hawks,雞隻尖叫如鷹鳴,
“But they could not affect the Guide,「但牠們無法影響導師,」
Or even cause him a disturbance.也無法引起導師的困擾。
Horses brayed like mules,馬寶發出騾子般的叫聲,
And Cañcā made the sounds of eagles.舍勒鳥發出了鷲鷹的叫聲。
“But they could not affect the Guide,「但他們無法動搖導師,」
Or even cause him any disturbance.或者使他感到任何擾亂。
Elephants shrieked like owls, called like Cañcā,象寶發出貓頭鷹的尖叫聲,發出舍勒鳥的鳴叫聲,
And made sounds of birds, bulls, and storks.發出了鳥類、牛隻和鸛鳥的聲音。
“Vultures cried like jṛmbha birds,禿鷹發出頷鳥的叫聲,
Birds and bulls made sounds of kettle drums,鳥類和公牛發出了大鼓的聲音,
Geese made all types of sounds,鵝發出各種各樣的聲音。
Cuckoos made all different sounds of yakṣas.杜鵑鳥發出了各種夜叉的聲音。
“Kumbhāṇḍas made all sorts of sounds.瓶神發出各種各樣的聲音。
Certain beings made all types of sounds with a single mouth.某些眾生用一張嘴發出各種各樣的聲音。
They made the respective sounds with a single mouth,他們用一張嘴發出各自的聲音,
In a single instant making infinite sounds.在一個瞬間製造無數的聲音。
“But they could not affect the Guide,「但他們無法影響導師,」
Or even cause him a disturbance.或者使導師受到擾亂。
Nāgas let down a rain of stones from their mouths龍從口中降下石雨
And a fierce shower of weapons,還有猛烈的武器雨射下來,
“But they could not affect the Guide,但他們無法動搖導師,
Or even cause him any disturbance.或者甚至對導師造成任何擾亂。
Yakṣas rained down stones from their mouths夜叉從口中降下石雨
As well as a blazing shower of fire以及熊熊燃燒的火雨
“And a rain of mountains and dust,「以及山嶺和塵埃的降雨,
But they could not disturb the Well-Gone One.但他們無法擾亂善逝。
Kumbhāṇḍas rained down arrows,瓶神降下箭雨,

Or even cause him any disturbance.也不能令導師產生任何擾亂。

A terrifying appearance and made threats.顯現可怖的樣貌並發出威脅。
“But arousing his limitless power of perseverance,「但他喚起了無邊的忍耐力量,
He withstood the force of the demons and realized awakening.他承受住了魔的力量,證得了菩提。
The Self-Manifest One intimidated the demon horde自顯者威懾魔眾
And sat cross-legged at the base of the supreme tree without leaving.並在至高樹下結跏趺坐,不曾離開。
“Like chaff carried off by the wind, he vanquished them,「如同糠秕被風吹散,他摧毀了他們,
And reached supreme awakening, understanding all lives.並證得無上菩提,徹悟一切眾生。
Then the earth shook in six ways.那時大地六種震動。
The menacing hordes looked for safety,兇惡的軍隊尋求安全庇護,
“Like birds carried off by a storm,「如同鳥兒被暴風吹走,
Conquered by the Well-Gone One’s brilliance.被善逝的光輝所降伏。
Then the variety of faces manifested那時多種面貌顯現
By those nāgas, yakṣas, and rākṣasas—由那些龍、夜叉和羅剎——
“All the sounds they made with their mouths他們用嘴發出的所有聲音
Were all destroyed by the brilliance of the power of User of Evil.都被惡用者的力量光輝所摧毀。
As I was able to vanquish the demonic maidens,我之所以能夠戰勝那些魔女,
I also made the maidens become old.我也讓那些少女變得蒼老。
“In that way the Obstinate Force of Evil, manifested on his own,「就這樣執著惡力,自己顯現出來,
Was conquered by the power of User of Evil.被惡用者的力量所征服。
The barrage of emanations the god sent at the supreme Well-Gone One天神發出的化身大軍襲擊至高無上的善逝
Was overpowered by the Guide of the World.被世界導師的力量所制服。
“User of Evil led to awakening惡用者引導至菩提
All eight hundred thousand divine maidens;全部八百萬位天神女子;
Tamed, they remained unwavering in awakening.被馴服後,他們在菩提中堅定不移。
Then the troublemakers felt in pain,那時製造麻煩的人感到痛苦,
“Until User of Evil appeared and said,直到惡用者出現並說道,
‘I will liberate these beings.「我將解脫這些眾生。」

Strives to put it out, I shall persevere.我要為無數眾生而努力,

Thus in pursuit of supreme peace,如是追求究竟寂靜,

2.269Then the nāga king Mahācandra asked the Blessed One in the form of a song in verse:
2.269其時大月龍王以偈頌的形式向薄伽梵提出了請問:
“Helmsman and Teacher of humans and gods,「人和天神的舵手與導師,
Guide of all beings including the gods,一切眾生包括天神的導師,
I ask you: how did the Well-Gone One, [F.129.a]我請問您:善逝是如何
Self-born and mindful, attain unsurpassed awakening?”自己覺悟而心念分明,成就無上菩提?
The sagacious guide who has conquered existence,已征服輪迴的睿智導師,
The Victor and supreme person, explained勝者及至高的人物解釋道
How the self-born Guide, the Well-Gone One,自性而生的導師,善逝,
Tricked Māra and reached nirvāṇa:欺騙了魔,證得涅槃:
“If you remain mindful of the applications of mindfulness,「如果你保持對念住的正念,
Unwholesome migration in cyclic existence will cease.不善的輪迴遷移將會停止。
Whatever ignorant beings become attached to,無論愚癡的眾生執著於什麼,
They experience no happiness and instead meet pain.他們不體驗樂,反而遇到苦。
“I brought to mind the suffering in cyclic existence"我回想起輪迴中的苦
Of the unmindful who lack understanding of cyclic existence;對於那些心不在焉、缺乏對輪迴認知的人;
Confused, they do not know the way to liberation,他們迷惑困頓,不知道解脫的道路。
And take pleasure in the realm of affliction and evil.沉溺在煩惱與惡業的領域中而自得其樂。
“In their wrong, misguided state of mind,在他們的錯誤、迷茫的心念中,
They take the impermanent to be permanent, suffering to be pleasure,他們把無常執著為常,把苦執著為樂,
That which lacks a self to have one, and the impure to be pure.缺乏自我的東西擁有自我,以及不淨的為淨。
They are never free from the realm of affliction and evil.他們永遠無法脫離煩惱和惡業的領域。
“Recognizing how they migrate because of their errors,"認識到他們因為錯誤而輪迴轉生,
And understanding the path of the applications of mindfulness,並且領悟念住之道,
When I was training, for the sake of beings,當我在修行時,為了利益眾生,
I applied mindfulness to becoming awakened.”我運用正念於成就覺悟。
When the nāga heard about the application of mindfulness,龍聽聞念住的法門時,
He felt yearning for immeasurable awakening.他對無量菩提生起了渴望。
The nāga Mahācandra then praised the helmsman of the untamed,龍大月隨後讚歎了馴服未馴者的舵手,
The Victor who applied mindfulness:應用正念的勝者:
“Homage to the guide of unmindful beings,「禮敬那些心不在焉的眾生的導師,
The one who abides by the power of mindfulness!住於正念力量者!
Having felt yearning for immeasurable awakening,經過對無量菩提的渴望與追求,
He has taught the way to unwaning mindfulness.他教導了不衰退的正念之道。
“Having felt yearning for immeasurable awakening,感受到對無量菩提的渴望,
I will reach the abode of mindful awakening.我將到達正念菩提的淨土。
I will vanquish and forsake the force of evil and the legions of evil.我將摧毀並捨棄邪惡的力量和邪惡的眾多勢力。
I will liberate beings bound tightly by evil.”我將解救被邪惡緊緊束縛的眾生。
With his wisdom of applying mindfulness,以他應用正念的慧。
The Victor was aware of what the nāga was thinking.勝者了知龍的心念。
In order to benefit beings, the Guide prophesied為了利益眾生,導師作出預言
The nāga Mahācandra’s unfathomable awakening:龍大月不可思議的菩提:
“O nāga lord, in the past you served「龍王啊,在過去世中,你曾侍奉
Eight hundred million previous buddhas.八億位過去的佛。
In the future you will serve one hundred million buddhas未來你將侍奉一億位佛。
In pursuit of the peace of awakening.追求菩提的寂靜。
“Eventually you will reach unfathomable awakening.最終你將證得無邊的菩提。
Your name as a victor will be Sublime Moon. [F.129.b]你作為勝者的名號將是妙月。
You will weaken the force of evil immensely,你將大大削弱邪惡的力量,
And transmute the force of evil into the way of the victors.”並將惡的力量轉化為勝者的道路。
When they heard the Buddha’s marvelous words,當他們聽到佛陀奇妙的言語時,
Ten million nāgas were introduced to supreme awakening,一千萬條龍被引入至高無上的菩提。
Penetrating awakening with their minds as never before.以前所未有的方式用心領悟菩提。
They delighted in the Buddha’s marvelous speech.他們歡喜於佛陀的不可思議言語。
2.282Then the nāga king Gatherer asked the Blessed One in the form of a song in verse:
2.282那時龍王集聚向薄伽梵以偈頌的形式提出了請問:
“Victor who took birth,「勝者誕生者,
How can one practice with mind undeluded人如何才能以不迷惑的心來修持
To conquer the force and legions of Māra,為了征服魔的力量與軍隊,
And achieve the peace of unexcelled awakening?”並證得無上菩提的寂靜?
“Never waver from a happy attitude,「永遠不要放棄歡喜的態度,
Forsake afflictions and the force of Māra,舍棄煩惱和魔的力量,
And carry out the practice of the victors, resting in equanimity—並且實踐勝者的修行,安住於捨中——
Then will you swiftly achieve the peace of awakening.”那麼你將迅速證得菩提的寂靜。
The nāga was delighted with this answer,龍聽到這個答案感到歡喜,
Set his resolve on the awakened state of the victors,將其決心設定於勝者的菩提境界。
Escaped from the realm of Māra in equanimity,從魔的領域中以捨而得以解脫,
And praised the Guide in terms of concentration:並以禪定讚歎導師:
“You know the proper from the improper domain.「你知曉何為正當的領域,何為不正當的領域。
Anyone you teach, O Guide of the World,導師啊,您所教導的任何人,
Becomes free from the domain of Māra.就從魔的領域中解脫。
Homage to you whose mind is free from attachment!向您禮敬,您的心意已解脫貪著!
“From this day forward, I will engage in the domain"從今以後,我將致力於勝者的領域
Of the victors and forsake the domain of Māra.遠離勝者的領域,捨棄魔的領域。
I will liberate beings from the domain of Māra,我將把眾生從魔的領域中解救出來,
And lead them to the domain of the Blissful.”並將他們引導到極樂世界的境域中。
Aware of the nāga lord’s thoughts,了知龍王的思想,
The supreme person prophesied his awakening,這位至高無上的人預言了他的菩提。
And a full ten million nāgas involved with affliction而一千萬條被煩惱所纏繞的龍
And the domain of Māra reached the state of full abiding.魔的領域到達了圓滿安住的狀態。
2.288Then the nāga king Power Wielder asked the Blessed One in the form of a song in verse:
“How can people who train in insight「如何修習慧的人們
Practice non-attachment to sense pleasures,修習不貪著五欲,
To vanquish Māra’s ten powers and his legions,為了戰勝魔的十力及其眷屬,
And achieve unfathomable, flawless awakening?”並成就不可思議、無有缺陷的菩提?
“Those who know that everyone is illusory「那些懂得一切眾生皆虛幻的人
Are no longer bound by the ropes of evil. [F.130.a]不再被邪惡之繩所束縛。
Yet seeing beings still bound by Māra,然而見到眾生仍被魔所束縛,
They feel compassion and engage in the supreme austerities.”他們生起悲心,投入到至高無上的苦行中。
Hearing the Teacher’s words, the nāga was delighted,聽聞導師的話語,龍感到欣喜。
His mind elated with immeasurable joy.他的心充滿了無量的喜。
He praised the Victor for his wisdom,他讚美勝者的慧。
And roused his mind to strive for awakening.並激發其心,為了菩提而精進。
Aware of the nāga lord’s thoughts,察知龍王的想法,
The Guide prophesied his supreme awakening.導師為他預言了無上菩提。
Ten million nāgas set themselves on supreme awakening,一千萬條龍立志菩提覺悟,
And the Knower of the World prophesied them all to awaken.世間智者為他們全部預言將會證得菩提。
2.292Then the nāga king Sūryagarbha asked the Blessed One in the form of a song in verse:
2.292然後龍王日光向薄伽梵以偈頌的形式提出了請問:
“O skilled Guide, please tell me—「噢,善巧的導師,請告訴我——
What method can a bodhisattva菩薩應當採用什麼方法來修習,以便在菩提上不退轉?
Employ in practice to not regress from awakening?菩薩應當採用什麼方法來修行,才能不退失菩提?
Foremost of humans, please explain this to me!人中最勝者,請為我說明此事!
“O Well-Gone One, supreme person, when people「善逝啊,至高的人,當人們
Hear from you how to keep their mind from regressing,從你那裡聽聞如何保持心靈不從菩提退轉,
They will venture to become skilled in methods,他們將勇敢地努力精通各種方法。
And will carry out their practice undauntedly.”而且會堅定不移地進行修行。
“Have compassion for ignorant beings「對無明的眾生要有悲心」
Who are degenerate and enter onto bad paths;他們會淪落沉淪,踏上惡劣的道。
Exert yourself, for the sake of beings,你要為了眾生的緣故而精進。
In the teaching of the perfect Buddha, forsaking the self.在正等覺的教法中,捨棄我。
“When you understand the identity of things,「當你理解事物的本質時,
You will forsake the self and become undaunted.你將放棄我執,變得無所畏懼。
When you know phenomena to be unmoving,當你認知現象不動時,
You can teach that understanding to others.你可以將這樣的認知教導給他人。
“Do not be afraid or apprehensive「不要害怕或擔憂
To relinquish your wife, sons, or daughters.捨棄你的妻子、兒子或女兒。
Then, without dwelling on anything,那時,不執著於任何事物,
You will abide by the perception of the absence of self.你將安住於無我的想。
“Revealing the absence of self in the aggregates,在五蘊中顯露無我。
You will attain sublime happiness, which is transcendent.”你將證得出世間的殊勝樂。
At that moment innumerable tens of millions of beings在那個時刻,無量億的眾生
Came to maturity, feeling joyful and dauntless.達到了成熟,感受到喜樂與無畏。
Overjoyed by the Teacher’s words, the nāga龍王被導師的話語所喜悅,
Took refuge in the Buddha sincerely,誠心皈依佛陀。
Formed the resolve in his heart for awakening,在心中確立了追求菩提的決心,
And the Knower of the World prophesied his awakening.世間智者為其預言菩提的證得。
2.299Then the nāga king Ungraspable [F.130.b] asked the Blessed One in the form of a song in verse:
2.299那時龍王無著以偈頌的方式向薄伽梵提出詢問:
“Well-Gone One, how should your child practice「善逝啊,您的孩子應當如何修習
To easily achieve awakening to buddhahood?以輕易成就佛果的菩提?
Please tell me how to advance to the unfathomable請告訴我如何進入深不可測的境界
Just as the Sage swiftly did.”正如聖者迅速成就的一樣。
The Victor and foremost human, definitively awakened勝者與至尊的人類,明確地已證得菩提
By means of his self-manifest wisdom, replied,他以自己顯現的慧回答說,
“If you practice for awakening properly,「如果你正確地為了菩提而修行,」
You will never meet with the suffering of beings.你將永遠不會遇見眾生的苦。
“If you act altruistically out of love, no matter where you are,「如果你出於慈心而利他行動,無論你身在何處,」
Your loving attitude will never be bewildered.你的慈悲態度永遠不會迷茫。
In love, no suffering will occur,在慈心中,不會產生苦。
And you will not waver from the practice of subduing faults.你將不會在降伏過失的修行中動搖。
“As you practice, you will also teach all beings:「當你修習時,你也會教導所有眾生:
‘Cultivate love!’ ‘Don’t be distracted!’「培養慈!」「不要分心!」
‘Conquer your faults with a tranquil mind!’「用止的心征服你的過失!」
You will pursue tranquility to help sentient beings.你將追求止以幫助眾生。
“Engaging in wholesome actions,「從事善業,
As you carry out your training, you will not suffer.當你進行修行時,你將不會受苦。
You will swiftly reach boundless awakening,你將迅速證得無邊菩提,
And your whole following will be in harmony.”你的整個追隨者都將處於和諧之中。
Delighted by the Teacher’s words,歡喜於導師的言語,
The nāga gave up wrongdoing with a tranquil mind,那條龍以寧靜的心,放棄了惡行。
Subdued wrongdoing with love in his heart,以慈心降伏了不善的行為,
And formed the resolve to awaken.並發願證得菩提。
The Victor, who knew the past and future, was aware勝者洞悉過去與未來,深知一切。
Of his thoughts—how he had tamed his afflictions with pure intention他如何以純淨的念頭馴伏了自己的煩惱
And utterly established himself in purity—並且完全證得了清淨。
And prophesied the nāga’s supreme awakening:並預言了龍的究竟菩提:
“Eighty quintillion eons from now,「從現在起八十不可思議劫之後,
Due to your loving kindness, you will be a victor因為你的慈悲,你將成為勝者
Known as Pure Mind, your senses subdued,名叫清淨心,感官已調伏,
Venerated by gods and men.”受到天神和人類的尊敬。
Overjoyed, his mind elated,喜悅充滿心中,心念歡躍,
He bowed his head at the feet of the Victor,他在勝者的腳下低頭敬禮,
And praised the Victor with these verses:並以偈頌讚嘆勝者:
“In your utterly pure mind all faults are totally subdued.「在你完全清淨心中,所有過失都被徹底降伏。
You have conquered delusion and vanquished Māra.你已經克服了癡,戰勝了魔。
You have the compassion to benefit all sentient beings,你具備了利益一切眾生的悲心,
And you have forsaken the poison of wrongdoing—homage to you!”你已棄捨了邪行的毒害——敬禮於你!
2.309Then the nāga king Totally Haughty asked the Blessed One in the form of a song in verse: [F.131.a]
“What method should one use when practicing"修行時應當使用什麼方法"
So as not to fall under the sway of the realm of Māra,為了不陷入魔王的控制之下,
But be protected by all the buddhas?但卻能被所有的佛所保護?
O Well-Gone One, great sage—O Buddha, I ask this of you!”善逝啊,大聖者——啊佛陀,我向您請問這個問題!
The Victor was aware of his thoughts,勝者察知了他的想法,
And so with his all-seeing wisdom free of attachment,於是,他以無貪著、遍見一切的慧,
His hundred marks of merit, and his altruistic compassion,他的百般福德之相,以及利他的悲心,
The Buddha, skilled in power, replied,佛陀以善巧力量作了回應,
“If you constantly apply mindfulness,「如果你不斷運用正念,
You will not fall under the sway of affliction and Māra.你就不會落入煩惱和魔的控制之中。
If you constantly practice mindfulness with purity of mind,如果你始終以清淨的心持守正念,
Then you will not be led into the influence of Māra.”那麼你就不會被魔所引導。
Hearing the Victor’s excellent speech,聽聞勝者的殊妙教言,
The nāga was delighted by the Teacher’s words.那位龍對導師的言語感到歡喜。
He praised the Well-Gone One with a clear mind他以清淨的心讚歎善逝。
And pure and irreproachable language:以及清淨無垢的言語:
“You have conquered birth in existence and are full of love.「你已經克服了輪迴中的生,充滿了慈。」
Perceiving how beings are following bad paths,覺察眾生正在追隨惡道,
You eliminate doubt and with a joyful mind你消除疑,以喜悅的心

Lead beings onto the path prescribed by the victors.引導眾生進入勝者所制定的道諦。
“Hearing these words, I vow「聽聞這些言語,我發誓
To practice in pursuit of the Victor’s teachings.為了修習追求勝者的教導。
I will conquer the forces and legions of Māra,我將征服魔的力量和軍隊,
Become free from the phenomena of suffering, and reach buddhahood.”遠離苦的現象,證得佛果。
2.315Then the nāga king Causing Downpour asked the Blessed One in the form of a song in verse:

“Supreme and loving refuge of beings,「眾生至高無上的慈愛皈依處,
All-seeing, compassionate, eminent Victor,遍觀一切的悲心薄伽梵,尊貴的勝者,
How should one practice toward flawless awakening?應該如何修行才能趣向無瑕的菩提?
With your assemblage of ten powers and wisdom, I beseech you:以您具足的十力與慧,我懇切地祈求您:
“O Protector of the World, please extinguish my doubts!”「世界保護者啊,請熄滅我的疑惑!」
Aware of the thoughts of all beings,能夠洞悉一切眾生的念頭,
The Well-Gone One delighted the nāga, saying,善逝使龍歡喜,說道:
“To understand your mind, train in steady diligence,「要了解自己的心,就要在穩定的精進中進行修行,」
Just as the Well-Gone One has taught.正如善逝所教導的那樣。
To understand your mind, gain conviction.”要理解你的心,獲得確信。
Hearing of the path taught by the Victor, he remained there,聽聞勝者所教導的道諦,他留在那裡。
His mind elated, having removed all doubt.他的心歡喜踊躍,已經去除了所有的疑。
With joy he knelt on the ground他歡喜地跪在地上
And praised the Guide who benefits the world:並讚頌利益世界的導師:
“Having eliminated all affliction, you are unsurpassed. [F.131.b]「你已經消除了一切煩惱,無人能及於你。
There is no one like you, let alone superior.沒有人像你那樣,更談不上有誰超越你。
You delight the minds of beings irreproachably—你以無可指摘的方式令眾生心生歡喜——
Well-Gone One, homage to your tremendous awakening!”善逝,敬禮你偉大的菩提!
2.319The Blessed One was aware of the thoughts of all these nāga kings. He understood their karma and he understood their aspirations. Having benefitted the whole world including gods, humans, and demigods greatly, he then said to the monks, “Behold, O monks. After these nāga kings heard the Discipline from the Thus-Gone One, they display signs of discipline. They display signs of kindness, signs of adherence, signs of being guides, signs of leadership, and signs of reaching the end. They have altruistically set their intentions on unexcelled and perfect awakening. All these nāga kings will benefit beings and pass beyond suffering by means of the vehicle of unexcelled and perfect awakening.”
2.319薄伽梵知道這些龍王們的思想。他了解他們的業,也了解他們的願。他大大地利益了包括天神、人類和阿修羅的整個世界,然後對比丘們說:"比丘們,你們要看啊。這些龍王們從如來那裡聽聞了律法之後,就展現出了守持律法的跡象。他們展現出了慈悲的跡象、依止的跡象、導師的跡象、領導的跡象,以及達到究竟的跡象。他們無私地將自己的心願設定在無上正等菩提上。所有這些龍王們將會利益眾生,並通過無上正等菩提的法乘超越苦難。"
