21.1Monks, in order to venerate the Bodhisattva, the other bodhisattvas manifested many such displays at the seat of awakening. The Bodhisattva himself, however, caused all the displays that ornamented all the seats of awakening of the past, present, and future buddhas in all the buddha realms in the ten directions to become visible right there at the seat of awakening.
21.1比丘們,為了尊敬這位菩薩,其他菩薩們在菩提座前展現了許多這樣的景象。然而,菩薩自己使得過去、現在和未來所有諸佛在十方所有佛國土中的菩提座上的一切裝飾景象都在那個菩提座上顯現出來。
Monks, as the Bodhisattva now sat at the seat of awakening, he thought to himself, “Māra is the supreme lord who holds sway over the desire realm, the most powerful and evil demon. [F.147.b] [300] There is no way that I could attain unsurpassed and complete awakening without his knowledge. So I will now arouse that evil Māra. Once I have conquered him, all the gods in the desire realm will also be restrained. Moreover, there are some gods in Māra’s retinue who have previously created some basic goodness. When they witness my lion-like display, they will direct their minds toward unsurpassed and complete awakening.”
比丘們,菩薩現在坐在菩提座上,心中思考道:「魔是統治欲界的至高之主,是最強大、最邪惡的魔。[F.147.b] [300]如果沒有他的認可,我就不可能證得無上正等正覺。所以我現在要喚起這個邪惡的魔。一旦我征服了他,欲界中的所有天神也都會被調伏。而且,在魔的眷屬中,有一些天神曾經積累過一些善業。當他們看到我獅子般的展現時,他們會把心意轉向無上正等正覺。」
21.2Monks, as soon as the Bodhisattva had this thought, a light known as the light which conquers all demonic congregations was emitted from the hair between his eyebrows. The light illuminated all demonic abodes in the entire great trichiliocosm, making them dark by comparison and causing them to shake. In fact the entire great trichiliocosm was bathed in an immense light.
21.2比丘們,菩薩一生起這個念頭,就從他的眉間毛孔放射出一道光芒,名叫「降伏一切魔眾光」。這道光照亮了整個大千世界中所有的魔界,使它們相形之下變得黑暗,並且引發了震動。實際上,整個大千世界都沐浴在這道巨大的光芒中。
21.3From this light a voice called out to Māra, the evil one:
21.3從這光芒中傳出一個聲音,呼喚魔王這個邪惡者:
“Here is a pure being who has acted well for many eons.「這裡有一位在許多劫以來修行善法的清淨者。
As Śuddhodana’s son he abandoned his kingdom;作為淨飯王的兒子,他放棄了自己的王國;
He appeared as a benefactor seeking immortality.他以世尊的身份出現,尋求不死。
He has arrived at the Bodhi tree, so you should now make an effort!他已經到達菩提樹,你們現在應該努力修行!
“Himself having crossed, he causes others to cross;「自己已經度脫,他也使他人度脫;
Himself liberated, he also liberates others.自己得到解脫,也令他人得到解脫。
Having found relief, he gives relief to others;獲得解脫,他也給予他人解脫;
Having passed beyond suffering, he will cause others to transcend suffering.超越了苦之後,他將使他人也超越苦。
“He will empty the three lower realms totally,「他將完全清空三惡道,
And fill the city of gods and humans. [301]並使天神和人類的城邦充滿眾生。
He, the Benefactor, will attain immortality,他,世尊,將證得不死。
And bestow absorptions, higher knowledge, immortality, and happiness.並賜予禪定、宿命智、不死和幸福。
“He will empty your city, O evil kinsman;「他將會清空你的城市,邪惡的親戚啊;」
With your army powerless, you will be without an army and without allies.你的軍隊會失去力量,你將沒有軍隊和盟友。
When the Self-Arisen One, by his nature, pours down the rain of Dharma,當自在者以其本性降下法雨時,
You will not know what to do or where to go.”你將不知道該做什麼或往何處去。
21.7Monks, Māra, the evil one, was aroused by these verses and had a dream with thirty-two omens. [F.148.a] What are these thirty-two? They are as follows:
21.7比丘們,那惡魔受到這些偈頌的激發,做了一個夢,夢中出現了三十二個預兆。這三十二個預兆是什麼呢?具體如下:
1. He saw his abode being filled with darkness.
2. The abode was filled with dust, and rough with scattered pebbles.
2. 住所充滿了塵埃,散落的石子使地面變得粗糙不平。
3. Startled with fear and terror, he fled in the ten directions.
4. He lost his diadem and his earrings fell off.
5. His lips, throat, and mouth dried out.
6. His heart was beating fast.
7. The leaves, flowers, and fruits in his parks withered.
8. His lotus ponds were emptied of water and dried out.
9. All birds, such as swans, cranes, peacocks, cuckoos, kunālas, the two-headed pheasants, and so forth, had broken wings.
所有的鳥類,如天鵝、鶴、孔雀、杜鵑、金翅鳥、雙頭雉雞等,翅膀都已破損。
10. All his musical instruments—such as his drum, conch, clay drum, hand drum, tambour, lute, harp, cymbals, and tambourines—broke, fell into pieces, then into shreds, and fell on the ground.
他所有的樂器——如鼓、螺貝、陶鼓、手鼓、鼓框、琵琶、豎琴、鈸、鈴鼓等——都破損了、碎裂了、化為碎片,散落在地上。
11. His beloved kinfolk and retinue abandoned him, their faces cast down, while he stood aside and brooded.
他親愛的親屬和眷屬都離棄了他,他們低眉順眼地走開,而他獨自站在一旁陷入沈思。
12. His chief queen, Māriṇī, fell from her bed onto the ground and started beating her head with her fists.
他的皇后魔后從床上跌落到地上,開始用拳頭打自己的頭。
13. Those among his sons who were the most diligent, powerful, glorious, and intelligent prostrated to the Bodhisattva, who was sitting at the supremely sacred seat of awakening.
他的兒子們當中那些最勤奮、最有力量、最光榮、最聰慧的,都向坐在至高無上的神聖菩提座上的菩薩頂禮膜拜。
14. His daughters wailed and cried out, “Oh no, father, oh no, father!” [302]
15. He was dressed in stained clothes.
16. With his head covered in dust and his face colorless and pale, he beheld himself as devoid of any vital force.
他的頭被塵埃覆蓋,面容蒼白無色,他看到自己完全喪失了生命力。
17. His palace with its corridors, skylights, and porticoes became covered in dust and crumbled down. [F.148.b]
他的宮殿連同走廊、天窗和門廊都被塵埃覆蓋,隨之崩塌。
18. All his generals from the realms of the yakṣas, rākṣasas, kumbhāṇḍas, and gandharvas placed their hands on their heads and fled while crying and wailing.
18. 他所有來自夜叉、羅剎、甕形鬼和乾闥婆界的將領都把手放在頭上,哭喊著逃離了。
19. Whatever divine regents there are among the gods in the desire realm—Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Virūḍhaka, Virūpākṣa, Vaiśravaṇa, Śakra, Suyāma, Santuṣita, Sunirmāṇarati, Vaśavartin, and so forth—Māra, the evil one, saw all of them eagerly listening to the Bodhisattva with their faces turned toward him.
欲界中的一切天神護者——持國天王、增長天王、廣目天王、毘沙門、釋提桓因、善時天、知足天、樂變化天、他化自在天等——魔王看見他們都熱切地聆聽菩薩的教法,臉都轉向了菩薩。
20. In the midst of battle, his sword could not be pulled from its sheath, and he himself was unwell and wailing.
20. 在戰鬥中間,他的劍無法從劍鞘裡拔出來,而且他自己也患病了,在哭泣哀號。
21. His retinue abandoned him.
22. His vases full of auspicious items fell into a hole.
23. The priest Nārada pronounced a curse.
24. The gatekeeper Ānandita cried out in distress.
25. The canopy of the sky became covered in darkness.
26. The goddess Śrī, who lives in the desire realm, began to weep.
27. His faculties became ineffectual.
29. His lattices of jewels and pearls became silent, fell apart, tore, and fell down.
他的珍珠寶石窗戶變得寂靜、破裂、撕裂,然後倒塌了。
30. His whole dwelling swayed.
31. The trees and the turrets of his buildings tore and fell over.
32. The entire army of Māra was felled in a confrontation.
Monks, such were the thirty-two omens in the dream of Māra, the evil one.
21.8When Māra awoke from this dream, he was so terrified that he gathered all his family members. When he saw that they had gathered along with his armies, his retinue, his generals, and his gatekeepers, he addressed them with these verses:
21.8魔從這個夢中醒來時,嚇得非常害怕,便召集了所有的家族成員。當他看到他們連同他的軍隊、眷屬、將領和門衛都聚集在一起時,他用這些偈頌向他們說話:
When Māra saw these omens, he became worried.當魔看到這些預兆時,他變得擔憂起來。
He summoned [303] the demon captain Siṃhahanu他召喚了魔將獅子頰。
And his sons and his retinue.以及他的兒子們和他的眷屬。
The evil kinsman then conferred with all of them: [F.149.a]那個邪惡的親戚隨後與他們全都商議了:
“Today I heard these verses sung from the sky:"今天我聽到從天空傳來唱誦的偈頌:
‘A being was born among the Śākyas adorned with perfect marks.一個有情生於釋迦族中,具足圓滿之相。
He practiced severe austerities for six years, and now has arrived at the Bodhi tree.’他修行了六年的苦行,現在已經來到菩提樹了。
You must make great effort!你必須做出極大的努力!
“If the Bodhisattva becomes awakened, all by himself「如果菩薩證得覺悟,完全靠他自己
He will awaken billions of beings.他將會喚醒數十億的眾生。
When he attains immortality and reaches the cool state,當他證得不死,達到清涼的境地時,
He will empty all our abodes.他會清空我們所有的住處。
“Come on! Let us advance with a great army!「來吧!讓我們帶著大軍前進!
We shall destroy that monk, alone at the king of trees.我們要在樹王處消滅那位獨自一人的比丘。
Quick, mobilize the four army divisions!快速動員四軍!
If you wish to please me, do not delay this.如果你們想要討我歡心,就不要遲延這件事。
“Although the world may be full of worthy ones and solitary buddhas,「雖然世界中充滿了應供和辟支佛,
My force will remain unharmed when they pass beyond suffering.我的軍隊在他們超越苦時將保持無損。
Yet if he alone becomes a victorious one and a Dharma king,但是如果他獨自成為勝者和法王,
He would never allow the line of uncountable victorious ones to be broken.”他決不會讓無量勝者的傳承斷絕。
21.14Monks, at that point the son of Māra, the evil one, who was named Sārthavāha, addressed his father in these verses:
21.14比丘們,此時魔的兒子,名叫商主的惡者,用偈頌向他的父親說道:
“Father, why is your face so sad and pale?「父親,您為什麼面容這麼憂傷蒼白呢?
Your heart is thumping and your every limb is shaking. [304]你的心在跳動,你的四肢在顫抖。
Come now, tell me quick, what did you hear or witness?你快點告訴我,你聽到或看到了什麼?
Let us discover the truth and devise a plan.”讓我們發現真諦並制定計畫。
21.15With his pride vanished, Māra said:
“Son, listen to me. I had a bad dream, extremely terrifying.「孩子啊,你聽我說。我做了一個惡夢,非常可怕。」
If I were to tell everything now to the audience here,如果我現在把一切都告訴這裡的聽眾,
You would faint and fall to the ground.”你們會昏迷倒地。
“When the time for battle has arrived, victory is of no bad consequence;「當戰鬥的時刻來臨時,獲勝沒有不良的後果;
However, for the one who is killed, there is detriment.然而,對於被殺害的人來說,是有損害的。
If your dream conveys an omen of this kind,若汝之夢如此預兆,
It may be best to give up and not go to war, which would bring humiliation.”放棄戰爭、不去作戰可能是最好的選擇,這樣可以避免蒙受恥辱。」
“One with a determined mind will win in battle;「心志堅定的人在戰鬥中會獲勝;
If we rely on firmness and correct action, victory will be ours.如果我們依靠堅定和正業,勝利就會屬於我們。
When he sees me and my retinue,當他看到我和我的眷屬時,
He will be powerless but to rise and bow to my feet.”他將無力不起身向我的腳下跪拜。
21.18Sārthavāha said: [F.149.b]
“An army may be vast, but if it is weak,「軍隊雖然人數眾多,但如果缺乏力量,
A single powerful hero may win the battle.一位強大的英雄可以贏得戰爭的勝利。
Even if the universe were filled with fireflies,即使整個宇宙充滿了螢火蟲,
They could be destroyed and eclipsed by a single sun. [305]它們都可以被一輪太陽摧毀和遮蔽。
He who is proud and ignorant does not have much acumen;驕傲無知的人,聰慧不多。
If he is opposed to a shrewd person, he will not be able to think effectively.”如果他與聰慧的人對立,他就無法進行有效的思考。
21.20Monks, Māra, the evil one, did not pay heed to Sārthavāha’s warning. Instead, he gathered all four divisions of his great and powerful army. It was a terrifying army, so brave in battle that it would make anyone’s hair stand on end. Such an army had never been seen before, or even heard of, in the realms of gods and humans. The soldiers were able to transform their faces in a trillion ways. On their arms and legs slithered hundreds of thousands of snakes, and in their hands they brandished swords, bows, arrows, darts, lances, axes, tridents, clubs, staffs, bludgeons, lassos, cudgels, discuses, vajras, and spears. Their bodies were covered in finest cuirasses and armor.
21.20比丘們,魔這個惡者沒有聽從商主的警告。相反地,他集結了自己四大軍隊的全部力量。這是一支可怕的軍隊,在戰鬥中如此勇猛,足以讓任何人毛髮豎立。在天神和人類的世界中,從未見過或甚至聽聞過這樣的軍隊。士兵們能夠以兆億種方式變換他們的面貌。他們的手臂和腿上纏繞著數十萬條蛇,手中揮舞著劍、弓、箭、飛鏢、長矛、斧頭、三叉戟、木棍、短棍、套索、棍棒、圓盤、金剛杵和矛。他們的身體覆蓋著最精良的甲冑和盔甲。
21.21Some had their heads, hands, or feet turned backward, or their eyes facing backward. Their heads, eyes, and faces were ablaze. Their bellies, hands, and feet were deformed, and their faces brimmed with vehement ardor. Their mouths, with protruding ugly fangs, appeared contorted in the extreme, and their thick and broad tongues, rough like a turtle’s neck or a straw mat, dangled from their mouths.
21.21有些魔兵的頭、手或腳轉向後方,或眼睛朝向後面。他們的頭、眼睛和臉孔熊熊燃燒。他們的腹部、手和腳畸形怪異,臉上洋溢著猛烈的熾熱。他們的嘴裡長著突出的醜陋獠牙,嘴形扭曲到了極點,粗厚寬闊的舌頭粗糙得像龜殼或草蓆一樣,從嘴裡垂掛下來。
Like the eyes of a black snake, which are flush with poison, their eyes were blazing red, as if on fire. Some of them were vomiting poisonous snakes, while others, like garuḍas emerging from the ocean, grasped these poisonous snakes in their hands and ate them. Some ate human flesh and drank blood, chewing on human arms, legs, heads, and livers, and slurping entrails, feces, and vomit. Their terrifying bodies had many colors, such as brown, blue, red, black, and blazing yellow.
他們的眼睛如同黑蛇的眼睛,充滿毒液,發出熊熊的紅光,彷彿在燃燒。其中有些魔軍在嘔吐毒蛇,還有些像從海洋中出現的金翅鳥一樣,用手抓住這些毒蛇吞食。有些吞食人肉,飲血,咀嚼人的手臂、腿、頭顱和肝臟,吸吮腸子、糞便和嘔吐物。他們恐怖的身體色彩各異,有褐色、藍色、紅色、黑色和熊熊燃燒的黃色。
21.22Some had ugly hollow eyes, like wells. Others had eyes that were gouged out, eyes that were ablaze, or disfigured eye sockets. [F.150.a] Some had ugly eyes, rolling and blazing. Some carried flaming mountains in their hands while playfully riding on other mountains as their mount. Others ran toward the Bodhisattva, carrying trees that had been uprooted.
21.22有些魔眾有著醜陋凹陷的眼睛,猶如深井。有些眼睛被挖出,或眼睛燃燒,或眼眶殘破。有些眼睛醜陋、轉動並燃燒著。有些在手中攜帶著燃燒的山嶽,同時調皮地騎著其他山嶽作為坐騎。還有些向著菩薩奔跑,攜帶著被連根拔起的樹木。
Some had ears like goats, demons, elephants, or pigs, or hanging ears. Others had no ears at all. Some had swollen bellies and weak bodies, with their bones sticking out. They had broken noses, bellies like barrels, and feet round as balls. [306] Their skin, flesh, and blood had dried out, and their ears, noses, hands, feet, eyes, or heads were cut.
有些魔有山羊、魔、象或豬的耳朵,或者耳朵下垂。有些根本沒有耳朵。有些魔腹部浮腫、身體虛弱,骨頭突出。他們的鼻子破損,腹部如桶般,腳圓如球。他們的皮膚、血肉乾枯,耳朵、鼻子、手、腳、眼睛或頭部被切割。
21.23Some were so thirsty for blood that they would cut each other’s heads off. They would make snappy, ugly, terrifying, and rough sounds of “Phut phut, picut, phulu phulu!” Others would call, “Let’s get rid of him! Grab that mendicant Gautama along with his tree! Let’s make sure that he is caught, cut, slashed, tied, held, harassed, cut in pieces, gotten rid of, and destroyed!”
21.23有些魔鬼渴血成性,會互相砍下對方的頭顱。他們發出尖銳、醜陋、恐怖而粗魯的聲音:「撲撲,皮劈,撲盧撲盧!」其他魔鬼則大聲喊叫:「我們把他除掉!抓住那個乞士喬答摩和他的樹!一定要把他逮住、砍傷、割裂、綁縛、控制、騷擾、碎屍萬段、消滅、摧毀!」
They were disfigured and caused terror with their awful faces of foxes, jackals, pigs, donkeys, oxen, elephants, horses, camels, wild asses, buffaloes, rabbits, yaks, rhinos, and the eight-legged lion beast. Some had animal bodies like lions, tigers, wild boars, bears, monkeys, elephants, cats, goats, sheep, snakes, mongooses, fish, crocodiles, alligators, tortoises, ravens, vultures, owls, and garuḍas.
他們面貌醜陋,用狐狸、豺狼、豬、驢、牛、象、馬、駱駝、野驢、水牛、兔子、氂牛、犀牛和八足獅獸那樣可怕的面孔製造恐怖。有些具有獅子、老虎、野豬、熊、猴子、象、貓、羊、綿羊、蛇、獴、魚、鱷魚、短吻鱷、龜、烏鴉、禿鷲、貓頭鷹和金翅鳥那樣的動物身體。
21.24Some had misshapen forms. Some had just one head, [F.150.b] but others had two or more, some had even up to one hundred thousand. Some had no head at all. Some had just one arm while others had up to one hundred thousand. Others had no arms. Some had just one leg while others had up to one hundred thousand. Others had no legs at all. Some had poisonous snakes emerging from their bodily apertures—ears, mouths, noses, eyes, and belly buttons. They threatened the Bodhisattva as they danced around and brandished their many weapons, such as swords, bows, arrows, darts, tridents, axes, discuses, spears, lances, vajras, javelins, and other sharp weapons.
21.24有的形貌扭曲畸形。有的只有一個頭,但也有兩個或更多個頭的,有的甚至多達十萬個。有的根本沒有頭。有的只有一條手臂,而另一些則多達十萬條。還有的沒有手臂。有的只有一條腿,而另一些則多達十萬條。還有的根本沒有腿。有的毒蛇從他們的身體孔竅──耳朵、嘴巴、鼻子、眼睛和肚臍──湧出。他們邊舞動邊揮舞許多武器,如劍、弓、箭、鏢、三叉戟、斧頭、輪盤、矛、槍、金剛杵、標槍和其他尖銳武器,以此威脅菩薩。
Some of them wore garlands of human fingers that they had cut off and strung together. Others wore on their heads bones, hands, and skulls, which they had strung into garlands, and some had their bodies covered in poisonous snakes. Some were holding skulls and rode on elephants, horses, camels, donkeys, and buffaloes. Some had their heads pointing down and feet up. Some had needle-like hair on their heads. Others had hair like oxen, donkeys, boars, mongooses, goats, sheep, cats, monkeys, wolves, or jackals.
他們當中有些人戴著用割下的人類手指串成的花環。有些人頭上戴著骨頭、手臂和頭骨串成的花環,有些人的身體被毒蛇覆蓋。有些人拿著頭骨,騎著大象、馬、駱駝、驢和水牛。有些人頭朝下、腳朝上。有些人頭上長著針狀的頭髮。有些人的頭髮像牛、驢、野豬、貓鼬、山羊、綿羊、貓、猴子、狼或豺狼的毛髮一樣。
21.25They were vomiting poisonous snakes, spitting out lumps of iron, spewing fire, and producing a rain of flaming iron and copper. They sent rains with thunder, released bolts of lightning, [307] caused a rain of hot iron sands, gathered black clouds, and made storms arise. They sent rains consisting of masses of arrows, bringing darkness and causing swishing sounds as they ran toward the Bodhisattva.
21.25他們吐出毒蛇,噴出鐵塊,噴射火焰,降下熊熊燃燒的鐵銅之雨。他們發送帶有雷聲的雨水,釋放閃電,造成熾熱鐵沙之雨,聚集烏雲,掀起風暴。他們降下由箭矢組成的雨水,帶來黑暗,發出呼呼的聲響,奔向菩薩。
Some of the soldiers swung their lassos, destroyed great mountains, stirred the vast oceans, jumped over tall mountains, and shook Meru, the king of mountains. In this way they came running, throwing their limbs in the air and rocking their bodies. [F.151.a] They cried out loudly in laughter, slapped and beat their chests, and disheveled their hair. Their faces were yellow, their bodies blue, their heads flaming with the hair streaming upward. Running around impetuously, darting here and there with eyes like a fox, they tried to frighten the Bodhisattva.
有些士兵揮舞著套索,摧毀了大山,攪動了廣大的海洋,跳過了高山,搖撼了群山之王須彌山。他們就這樣奔跑而來,拋擲著四肢,搖晃著身體。他們大聲狂笑,拍打和敲擊著胸膛,披散著頭髮。他們的臉色發黃,身體呈藍色,頭上火焰燃燒,頭髮向上飛揚。他們急促地奔跑,眼睛如狐狸般炯炯有神,四處奔竄,試圖驚嚇菩薩。
21.26Old women approached the Bodhisattva and called out to him, “Oh no, son! Oh no, my son! Get up! Quick, get up and flee!” Awful forms of demonesses, flesh eaters, and hungry spirits—one-eyed, limping, and with hunger in their eyes—ran toward the Bodhisattva with outstretched hands, distorted faces, and terrifying cries. They were fearful and horrifying.
21.26老婦人走近菩薩,向他喊道:「哎呀,兒子!哎呀,我的兒子!起來吧!快點起來逃跑!」可怕的羅剎女、食肉者和餓鬼——有著獨眼、瘸腿,眼中帶著飢餓——朝著菩薩跑來,伸出雙手,扭曲著臉孔,發出驚人的叫喊聲。她們恐怖而可怖。
Such an army of demons formed a big gathering, stretching eighty leagues on every side. Just like this single army, so too the armies of hundreds of zillions of evil demons, residing in the great trichiliocosm, spread themselves around the Bodhisattva in horizontal and upward directions.
這樣的魔軍聚集在一起,形成了一個龐大的集合,四面八方各延伸八十由旬。就像這一支魔軍一樣,數百億邪魔的軍隊也同樣如此,他們住在大千世界中,向著菩薩在水平和向上的方向展開。
21.27On this topic, it is said:
Forms of yakṣas, kumbhāṇḍas, and mahoragas,夜叉、甕形鬼、大蟒蛇的種種色身,
As well as rākṣasas, hungry spirits, and flesh eaters,以及羅剎、餓鬼和食肉者,
In any form that the world finds ugly and fierce,世界認為醜陋可怕的各種色身,
All have been magically manifested there by these rogues.這些都是由那些惡棍透過神通變現出來的。
They have one, two, three heads,它們有一個頭、兩個頭、三個頭,
Up to a thousand faces.最多有一千張臉。
One, two, three arms,一個手臂、兩個手臂、三個手臂,
Up to a thousand arms.直到一千隻手臂。
There are also many with one, two, three legs,還有許多具足一隻、兩隻、三隻腿的。
Even some with a thousand legs. [308]甚至有些還具有千條腿。
Some have a blue face and a yellow body;有的面部是藍色,身體是黃色;
Others have a yellow face and a blue body.有些則是黃面藍身。
Their heads and bodies do not match;他們的頭顱和身體不相匹配;
Such is the army of soldiers approaching.這就是正在逼近的士兵軍隊。
They have faces like tigers, snakes, and hogs,他們有著老虎、蛇和豬的臉孔,
Elephants, horses, donkeys, and camels,象、馬、驢和駱駝,
Monkeys, lions, or bears.猴子、獅子或熊。
Such are the faces of the approaching army.這就是接近而來的軍隊的容貌。
Many terrifying malevolent spirits approach,許多恐怖的邪惡餓鬼前來靠近,
With wild matted hair, sheep heads, crooked bones, and goiters; [F.151.b]頭髮蓬亂糾結,頭上長著羊頭,骨骼彎曲,脖子腫大;
Their bodies are drenched with human blood.他們的身體浸滿了人血。
Such are the malevolent spirits that approach.這就是接近而來的那些惡劣的餓鬼。
Their legs are like the legs of an antelope;牠們的腿像羚羊的腿;
Their eyeballs look like those of monkeys;他們的眼睛像猴子的眼睛一樣。
Their fangs look like elephant tusks.他們的牙齒看起來像象牙一樣。
Such are the faces of the approaching army.這就是逼近的軍隊所呈現的面貌。
The shape of their bodies is that of a crocodile;他們的身體形狀如同鱷魚;
Their two eyeballs are ablaze;牠們的兩隻眼珠熊熊燃燒。
Their ears are like those of a goat.他們的耳朵像山羊的耳朵。
Such are the faces of the approaching army.這就是逼近而來的軍隊的樣貌。
Some hold up a staff in their hands,有些則手持著木杖,
Others brandish hammers, clubs, and tridents,有的揮舞著錘子、棍棒和三叉戟,
While some hold Mount Meru in their hands.有些則手中托著須彌山。
These are the terrifying forms of the approaching malevolent spirits.這些是逼近而來的邪惡餓鬼那可怕的色身。
They hold up sickles, brandish discuses, roll their eyes,他們舉起鐮刀,揮舞著圓盤,轉動眼睛,
Lift great mountaintops in their hands,在雙手中高舉巨大的山頂,
And bring down storms and rains of rock and meteor.降下暴風雨和石頭、隕石的雨。
These are the terrifying malevolent spirits approaching.這些是正在逼近的恐怖惡毒餓鬼。
They blow hurricanes, bring down rainstorms,他們吹動颶風,降下暴雨,
Shoot off billions of lightning bolts,發射數十億道閃電,
Roar with thunder, and sway trees.以雷聲轟鳴,搖動樹木。
Yet the leaves on the Bodhi tree remain still.然而菩提樹的葉子卻保持靜止。
The rain pours down in torrents;大雨傾盆而下;
Rivers overflow and flood the land.河流泛濫,淹沒大地。
So many terrifying things have appeared這樣許多驚人的景象就出現了
That even inanimate trees fall over.連沒有生命的樹木都被吹倒了。
As they witness these terrible forms,當他們看到這些恐怖的色
All of them ugly and misshapen.它們全都醜陋且畸形。
Yet the One Who Has Qualities, Marks, and Splendor然而具有品質、相和光輝的那一位
Keeps his mind unshaken, like Mount Meru.保持心念堅定不動,如須彌山一樣穩固。
He sees all phenomena as illusion,他看一切法都如幻。
Like a dream, and like clouds.如夢幻,如雲霞。
Since he sees them in this manner that accords with the Dharma,因為他以這種符合法的方式來看待它們,
He meditates steadfastly, established in the Dharma.他穩固地安住於法中而修習禪定。
Whoever thinks of “me” and “mine”凡是執著於「我」和「我的」的人
And clings to objects and the body,執著於物質和身體的人,
Should be afraid and terrified,應該感到害怕和恐懼,
Since they are in the clutches of ignorance.因為他們被無明所控制。
The Son of the Śākyas has realized the essential truth釋迦族的聖子已經證悟了根本真諦
That all phenomena arise in dependence and lack reality.一切法都是因緣而生,本質上都是空無實性的。
With a mind like the sky, he is just fine,他心如虛空,安然無恙,
Unperturbed by the spectacle of the army of rogues.不為惡人軍隊的壯觀景象所擾動。
21.43Monks, among the one thousand sons of Māra, the evil one, [F.152.a] there were some, such as Sārthavāha, who began to feel devotion toward me, the Bodhisattva. They all assembled on the right side of Māra, the evil one, while those who supported Māra took a stand on his left side.
21.43諸比丘,在魔的一千個兒子中,有一些人,例如商主,開始對我這位菩薩生起敬心。他們都聚集在魔的右邊,而那些支持魔的人則站在他的左邊。
Now Māra asked his sons, “What type of army should we use to subdue the Bodhisattva?”
此時魔問他的兒子們:「我們應該用什麼樣的軍隊來制服菩薩?」
21.44Standing to his right, Māra’s son Sārthavāha spoke this verse to his father:
21.44站在他右邊的魔的兒子商主向他的父親誦說這首偈頌:
“Would you want to wake up the leader of the nāgas?「你想喚醒龍的首領嗎?
Would you want to wake up the leader of the elephants? [309]您想喚醒象群的領導者嗎?[309]
Would you want to wake up the king of the animals?你想喚醒畜生的王嗎?
That is like wanting to disturb the leader of men from his ease.”這好比想要擾亂人類領袖的安樂。
21.45Standing to his left, Māra’s son Durmati replied:
“Even at the mere sight of us, people’s hearts burst,「僅僅看到我們,人們的心就會爆裂,
And so does the solid core of great trees.大樹的堅實樹心也是如此。
Struck by my stare, what power would this monk have?被我的目光所擊,這位比丘會有什麼力量呢?
Or struck by death, what power would he have to live in this world?”或者被死所打擊,他在這個世界中還有什麼力量去活著呢?
21.46From the right side, Madhuranirghoṣa spoke:
“What solid core do trees have for that matter?「樹木究竟有什麼堅實的核心呢?
You say ‘I will break him by staring,’ but can you do that, people?你說「我會用眼光把他打碎」,但你們能做到嗎?
Even if you could destroy Mount Meru with your stare,即使你能用眼光摧毀須彌山,
You could not even open your eyes in his presence.你甚至無法在他面前睜開眼睛。
To cross the ocean using one’s hands用雙手來渡過大海
And to drink its water is impossible for people.而且飲用它的水對人類來說是不可能的。
Yet looking directly at the Bodhisattva’s stainless face然而,直視菩薩無垢的面容
Would be even harder than that.”會更加困難。」
21.48From the left side, Śatabāhu said:
“My body has one hundred arms,「我的身體有一百隻手臂,
And with just one of them I can shoot off one hundred arrows.我只需用其中一隻手臂,就能射出一百支箭。
O father, I will break the body of this monk!父親啊,我將摧毀這個比丘的身體!
Be happy and go now without delay.”你要歡喜,現在就趕快去吧。
21.49From the right side, Subuddhi said: [310]
“If it is advantageous to have one hundred arms,「如果具有一百隻手臂是有利的,
Why do bodily hairs not become arms?為什麼身體的毛髮不會變成手臂呢?
You may hold a spear in each of your hands你可以在每隻手中拿著一根矛
And use them all, yet that will bring you nothing.卻拿著它們全部使用,但那也無法為你帶來任何好處。
Because of his love, the body of this sage [F.152.b]因為他的慈心,這位賢者的身體
Is inaccessible to poison, weapons, and fire.對毒藥、武器和火焰無法傷害。
Since the love that he feels transcends the world,因為他所感受的慈超越了世界,
When you shoot your weapons, they turn into flowers.當你射出武器時,它們變成了花朵。
All the powerful ones in the sky, the earth, and the waters,天空、大地和水域中所有強大的力量,
Whether humans or guhyakas, may hold up their swords and axes.無論是人類或隱地神,都可能舉起他們的劍和斧頭。

21.52On the left side, someone named Ugratejas called out:
“Invisible, I will enter his beautiful body「我將隱身進入他美妙的身體」
And then I will burn it,然後我就會燒毀它,
Just like a low forest fire就像低處的林火一樣
Would burn a dry, hollow tree.”會燒毀一棵乾枯、空心的樹。
21.53On the right side, Sunetra replied:
“You may burn the entire Mount Meru「你可以焚燬整個須彌山
And enter, invisible, into the earth,並進入大地,隱沒無蹤。
But his vajra mind cannot possibly be burned但他的金剛心是絕對不可能被焚毀的。
By the likes of you, even if you were equal in number to the grains of sand in the Ganges.即使你們的數量等同恆河沙粒一樣多,也無法做到。
It can happen that all mountains quake,一切山嶺都可能震動,
And it may be that the oceans dry up.海水也可能會乾涸。
It is also possible that the sun and moon will fall from the sky,太陽和月亮也可能從天空中墜落。
And it may be that the earth will one day melt away.地大也可能會消融。
“Yet it is impossible that the one who has set out然而,發心起行的人
是不可能
To benefit the world with a firm resolve以堅定的決心來利益世界
Should rise from the foot of the great tree應該從大樹根處起身
Before he attains awakening.”在他獲得覺悟之前。
21.56From the left side, Dīrghabāhugarvita said:
“Right here before you,「就在你面前,
I could use my bare hands我能夠用我赤裸的雙手
The sun, the moon, and the stars. [311]太陽、月亮和星星。[311]
“I could, with playful ease,「我能夠以遊戲的輕鬆方式,
Get hold of all the water in the four oceans.我會將四個大洋所有的水都掌握住。
Father, I will get hold of this monk父親,我會抓住這個比丘
And throw him to the end of the oceans.把他丟到海洋的盡頭。
“Father, may this army stand firm!「父親啊,願這支軍隊堅定不移!
Do not be aggrieved!不要憂傷!
I will uproot the Bodhi tree我要將菩提樹連根拔起
And scatter it everywhere with my hands.”用雙手把它散灑到各地。」
21.59From the right side, Prasādapratilabdha said:
“You may proudly assume「你可以驕傲地假設
That you can crush with your hands你能用雙手碾碎
All gods, demigods, and gandharvas,所有的天神、阿修羅和乾闥婆,
Along with the earth, the mountains, and the oceans.連同大地、山嶺和海洋。
“Yet even thousands of beings like you,「但即使有成千上萬像你這樣的眾生,
As many as there are grains of sand in the Ganges,恆河中沙粒那麼多的數量,
Would be unable to move a single hair都無法撼動他一根毛髮
On that wise Bodhisattva.”在那位智慧的菩薩身上。
21.61From the left side, Bhayaṃkara said:
“Father, for one who is set in the midst of a great army,「父親,對於置身於龐大軍隊中間的人來說,
What is the use of excessive fear? [F.153.a]過度的恐懼有什麼用呢?
He does not have an army. Where are his allies?他沒有軍隊。他的盟友在哪裡呢?
Why do you fear him?”你為什麼要害怕他呢?
21.62From the right side, Ekāgramati said:
“In the universe, the sun and the moon have no army,「在宇宙中,太陽和月亮沒有軍隊,
And the universal monarch and the lion have no army.而轉輪王和獅子也沒有軍隊。
Likewise this Bodhisattva has no army,同樣地,這位菩薩沒有軍隊,
Yet he is capable of destroying Namuci single-handedly.”然而他卻能夠單獨摧毀那目支。
21.63From the left side, Avatāraprekṣin said:
“He has no lances or spears, no clubs or swords,「他沒有長槍或矛,沒有棍棒或劍,
No horses, elephants, chariots, or foot soldiers.沒有馬匹、象隊、戰車或步兵。
That single arrogant monk, sitting there—那個孤獨傲慢的比丘,坐在那裡——
Father, I will kill him today, please have no worries.”父親,我今天就要殺死他,請你放心吧。
21.64From the right side, Puṅyālaṃkāra said:
“His body is unshakable and indestructible like Nārāyaṇa’s;「他的身體像那羅延天一樣堅固不可動搖、不可破壞;
He wears an armor of forbearance and wields the sword of unbendable diligence;他穿著忍辱的甲冑,揮舞著不可折服的精進之劍;
The threefold liberation is his steed, and knowledge is his bow.三解脫是他的坐騎,智慧是他的弓。
Father, through the force of his merit, the Bodhisattva will conquer Māra’s army.” [312]父親,由於他福德的力量,這位菩薩將會征服魔的軍隊。
21.65From the left side, Anivartin said:
“The fire burning on the plains does not shy away from burning the grass;"平原上燃燒的火焰不會迴避燃燒草叢;
The arrow shot skillfully cannot be stopped by a learned one;用箭術射出的箭不能被智者所阻擋;
The bolt of lightning shooting across the sky does not return.天空中射出的閃電不會折返。
I will not rest until I have conquered the son of the Śākyas.”我不會停止,直到我征服了釋迦族之子。
21.66From the right side, Dharmakāma said:
“When meeting wet grass, the fire retreats;「當遇到濕草時,火焰會退縮;
When the arrow hits a mountain peak, it rebounds;當箭矢擊中山峰時,它會反彈回去;
The bolt of lightning, having hit the ground, sinks down.閃電擊中地面後,就沉沒下去。
Until the Bodhisattva obtains peaceful immortality, he will not retreat.”菩薩未獲得寂靜不死之前,他絕不退縮。
Father, even if one could draw pictures in the empty sky,父親啊,即使有人能在空中畫圖,
Or gather the minds of all sentient beings, as many as there are, into one,或者,父親啊,將一切眾生的心意聚集在一起。
Or, my father, bind the sun, the moon, and the wind with a noose,或者父親啊,用繩套把太陽、月亮和風綁起來,
One could still not move the Bodhisattva from the seat of awakening.”還是無法讓菩薩離開菩提座。
21.68From the left side, Anupaśānta said:
“With the great poison of my gaze, I can burn Mount Meru「以我目光的大毒,我能燒焦須彌山
And turn the waters in the great oceans to ashes.並將大海中的水化為灰燼。
So, father, look at the seat of awakening and that monk那麼,父親,請看那菩提座和那位比丘。
As I now turn both of them to ashes with my gaze.”我現在用我的目光把他們兩個都化為灰燼。
21.69From the right side, Siddhārtha said: [313]
“You may be able to fill the world with poison「你也許能夠用毒藥填滿世界,」
And put ablaze the great trichiliocosm,並且點燃大千世界,
Yet by a mere glance from the One Who Is the Source of All Good Qualities, [F.153.b]然而,僅由具足一切善法根源的那一位一眼的注視,
Your poison will lose its toxicity.你的毒藥會失去其毒性。
“In the three realms, there are fierce poisons「在三界中,存在著猛烈的毒害
In the form of attachment, anger, and delusion.執著、瞋和癡的形式。
Yet none of them can be found in his body, nor in his mind,然而這些毒害在他的身體裡找不到,在他的心裡也找不到。
Just as mud and dust cannot be found in the heavens.正如泥土和塵埃不存在於天空中。
“His body, speech, and mind are pristine,他的身、語、意都清淨無染,
And he is filled with love for sentient beings.他對眾生充滿慈悲。
No weapon or poison will be able to harm him,任何武器和毒藥都無法傷害他,
So, father, please, let us all turn back.”所以,父親,請讓我們都轉身回去吧。
21.72From the left side, Ratilola said:
“I will play thousands of instruments「我將演奏數千種樂器
And send forth billions of well-adorned divine girls並派遣數十億位裝飾華麗的天界的少女
Who will get him excited and lead him to our exquisite harem.誰會讓他興高采烈地進入我們精美的后妃宮。
I will provide sexual pleasure and bring him under your control.”我將提供色樂,把他納入你們的掌控。
21.73From the right side, Dharmarati said:
“He only delights in the pleasures of the Dharma,他只在法的樂受中感到喜悅,
The bliss of concentration and the significance of immortality,禪悅與不死的意義,
And the joy of liberating sentient beings and the happiness of a loving mind.解脫眾生的喜樂和慈悲心的快樂。
He does not delight in the pleasures of passion.”他不貪著於欲樂。
21.74From the left side, Vātajava said:
“I can at once swallow the sun and the moon「我能夠一下子吞掉太陽和月亮
And the wind blowing through the sky.以及吹過天空的風。
Father, I will catch that mendicant this very day父親,我今天就要抓住那位乞士。
And blow him away like a handful of husk.”我可以一下子吞掉日月,也可以吹散空中的風。父親,我今天就要抓住那位乞士,並像吹散一把糠秕一樣把他吹走。
21.75From the right side, Māra’s son named Acalamati said:
“Even if all gods and humans became即使所有天神和人類都聚集在一起
As swift and strong as you are儘管你速度快、力量強
And gathered in a single place,聚集在一個地方,
They would be unable to harm this peerless being.”他們都無法傷害這位無與倫比的存在。
21.76From the left side, Brahmamati said:
“If there was such a fierce crowd of our men,「假如我們有這樣一支兇悍的隊伍,
He could do nothing to wound your pride.他無法傷害你的慢。
Since all tasks are accomplished by teams,既然所有的事業都是由團隊完成的,
How could he harm you just on his own?”他單獨一人怎麼可能傷害你呢?
21.77From the right side, Siṃhamati said: [314]
“Lions have never been seen sitting on the ground in a row;「獅子從未被看見排成一列坐在地上;
Those with a poisonous gaze do not team up.具有毒害視線的人們不會聯合。
Those splendorous beings that have courage because of being true,那些因為真實而具有勇氣的光輝眾生,
Those supreme leaders of beings also do not congregate together.”那些至尊的眾生領導者也不會聚集在一起。
21.78From the left side, Sarvacaṇḍāla said:
“Father, you have not heard such heated voices before「父親啊,您以前從未聽聞過如此激烈的聲音啊
As those your sons are calling out with now. [F.154.a]像你的兒子們現在所呼喊的聲音那樣。
Mustering diligence, speed, and power,激起精進、迅速與力量,
Let’s quickly go and destroy that monk!”讓我們趕快去摧毀那個比丘!
21.79From the right side, Siṃhanādin said:
“In the midst of the jungle, when the lion is not there,「在叢林之中,當獅子不在時,」
Many jackals bark.許多豺狼吠叫。
Yet when they hear the lion’s frightening roar,但是當他們聽到獅子可怕的吼聲時,
They flee in panic in all directions.他們驚慌失措地四散奔逃。
“In the same way, these ignorant sons of Māra,「同樣地,這些無知的魔的兒子們,
As long as they have not heard the voice of the perfect man,只要他們還沒有聽到完人的聲音,
Raise their voices, opinionated and impudent,高聲喧嚷,固執己見且傲慢無禮,
While the lion of men remains silent.”而人中的獅子保持沉默。
21.81From the left side, Duścintitacintin said:
“Whatever I wish for is quickly accomplished,「凡我所願,速得成就,」
So why does he not look at us with circumspection?那麼他為什麼不用審慎的眼光看待我們呢?
He must be either deluded or ignorant他一定是既愚癡又無知的。
Since he does not rise up quickly and flee.”因為他沒有迅速站起來逃離。
21.82From the right side, Sucintitārtha said:
“He is neither a fool nor a weakling;「他既不是愚癡者,也不是軟弱者;
You yourselves are the fools, so extremely careless.你們自己才是愚癡的人,極其疏忽不慎。
You have no idea about his valor;你們根本不瞭解他的英勇氣概;
The power of his insight will conquer you all.他的觀的力量將征服你們所有人。
“Even with the strength of demonic sons「即使擁有魔子的力量
Equal in number to the grains of sand in the river Ganges,數量等同於恆河沙粒般眾多,
You would not be able to bend a single hair on his head,你們連他頭上的一根毛髮都無法彎曲,
So how much less could you kill him?那麼你們又怎麼能殺死他呢?
“Do not corrupt your minds;「不要使你們的心念變得邪惡;
Instead you should respect him with devotion.你應該以敬心來尊敬他。
He is about to become king of the three realms;他即將成為三界的國王;
Turn back and do not make war.”回頭吧,不要發動戰爭。
21.85In this way a thousand of Māra’s sons, both good and bad, each further addressed Māra, the evil one, in verses. [315] At the end, Bhadrasena, the general of Māra, spoke these verses to him:
21.85這樣,魔的一千個兒子,無論好壞,都各自用偈頌向惡魔魔陳述了自己的勸告。[315]最後,魔的將軍吉祥軍向他說出了這些偈頌:
“All those who normally follow you, such as Śakra,「所有那些通常跟隨你的人,例如釋提桓因,」
The guardians, the hordes of half kinnaras,護法、成群的半人半鳥天使、
The leaders of the demigods, and the leaders of the garuḍas,阿修羅的首領,以及金翅鳥的首領,
Now they all join their palms and bow to the Bodhisattva.現在他們都合掌向菩薩頂禮。
“So what need is there to mention those who do not follow you,「那麼何必提起那些不追隨你的人呢,
Brahmā and the luminous gods,梵天和光明天,
And the gods of the pure realms— [F.154.b]還有淨土的天神—
They, too, all bow to him.他們也都向他頂禮。
“Even those of your sons who are wise,「即使你那些聰慧的兒子,」
Who are powerful and smart,那些有力量和聰慧的人,
Venerate the Bodhisattva恭敬菩薩
In accord with his essence.與他的本質相應。
“This army of yakṣas and other beings,「這支夜叉和其他眾生的軍隊,
Which extends for eighty leagues,延伸八十由旬之遠。
Is seen in full by the All-Seeing One,被全知者完全看見。
With a clear mind and without hatred.心念澄淨,不帶有厭惡。
“Since he is neither taken aback nor stirred「因為他既不驚惶,也不動搖
When seeing this wild and fierce army,當見到這樣狂野兇悍的軍隊時,
So hideous and frightening,如此醜陋和恐怖,
His victory is certain now.他的勝利已經確定了。
“Wherever this army is found,「無論這支軍隊出現在何處,
The cries of the jackal and the owl are heard.豺狼和貓頭鷹的叫聲傳來。
When the calls of the crow and the donkey ring out,當烏鴉和驢子的叫聲響起時,
It is wise to quickly retreat.迅速退卻是明智的。
“Please look toward the seat of awakening!「請看向菩提座!
Clever curlews, swans, cuckoos, and peacocks聰慧的鷸鴸、天鵝、杜鵑和孔雀
Are circumambulating the Bodhisattva.正在繞行菩薩。
It is certain that today the victory will be his.今日的勝利必定屬於他。
“Wherever this army is found,「無論這支軍隊出現在哪裡,
Dust and soot rain from the sky.塵埃和煙灰從天空紛紛落下。
Yet at the seat of awakening, a rain of flowers falls,然而在菩提座處,花雨紛紛落下,
So heed my words and turn back!所以要聽我的話,轉身離開吧!
“Wherever this army is found,「無論這支軍隊出現在何處,
The ground is uneven and filled with thorns and prickles.大地不平坦,充滿了荊棘和尖刺。
Yet at the seat of awakening, the ground is stainless like gold,然而在菩提座處,地面無垢如黃金,
So it is better for the wise to retreat.所以有智慧的人最好退縮。
“The past nightmares"過去的惡夢
Will now come true. If you do not retreat,將會變為現實。如果你不退兵,
He will reduce this army to dust,他將把這支軍隊化為塵埃,
Just as countries are destroyed by the sages. [316]正如國家被聖者摧毀一樣。[316]
“When the supreme, masterful sage「當至高無上、能力卓越的聖者
Became angry with King Brahmadatta ,對梵授王發怒了,
He burned the Daṇḍaka Forest他燒毀了檀特迦林
So that for many years no grass would grow.使得多年間草木都不再生長。
“Whatever sages there are who practice disciplined conduct「無論有多少賢者修持戒律
And practice austerities,並且修行苦行,
He is supreme among them,他在其中最為殊勝,
For he does not harm any living being.因為他不傷害任何生命。
“Have you not heard before"你難道以前沒有聽說過"
That the one whose body blazes with all the marks其身體以一切相而閃耀光明的那位
And who walks away from his home並且離開家園而去的人
Will conquer disturbing emotions and attain awakening?將會征服煩惱並證得覺悟?
“The sons of the victors manifest such great powers「勝者之子顯現如此偉大的力」
As an act of worship,作為一種禮敬的行為,
For isn’t the Supreme Being至尊者難道不是
A worthy recipient of the best of offering rites?不是配得最殊勝的供養禮儀嗎?
“Since the immaculate hair between his eyebrows「由於他眉間的清淨髮髻
Beautifies a trillion realms莊嚴十億個世界
And outshines all of us,並且超越我們所有人,
He will surely conquer Māra’s army.他必定會戰勝魔的軍隊。
“Since the gods at the peak of existence「既然輪迴頂峰的天神們
Are unable to see the crown of his head, [F.155.a]無法看見他的頭頂。
So, surely, without being taught by others,所以,他必定能夠自己領悟,無需他人教導,
He will attain omniscience.他將證得一切智。
“Since Mount Meru and the surrounding ranges,「既然須彌山及其周圍的山脈,
The sun, the moon, Śakra, Brahmā,太陽、月亮、釋提桓因、梵天,
All the trees, and the best of mountains所有的樹木和最殊勝的山峰
All prostrate to the seat of awakening,都禮敬菩提座,
“It is certain that the one with the power of merit,「確實,具有福德之力的那一位,」
The powers of knowledge and wisdom,智慧的力與聰慧的力,
And the powers of forbearance and diligence,忍辱和精進的力量,
Will render Māra’s factions powerless.必能令魔的勢力無能為力。
“Like an elephant stepping on a fresh clay pot,「如同象踩踏新鮮的陶土罐,」
Or a lion fighting a fox,或者獅子與狐狸搏鬥,
Or the sun effacing a firefly,或者如同太陽消滅螢火蟲,
The Well-Gone One will obliterate our army.”善逝將摧毀我們的軍隊。
21.105Upon hearing these words, another son of Māra became enraged and, with bloodshot eyes, he said:

“Your praise for this lone person「你對這個獨自一人的讚美
Is without any bounds.沒有任何限制。
What could that single man be capable of?那個單獨的人能做什麼呢?

21.106Then from the right side, the son of Māra called Mārapramardaka said: [317]

“It is not necessary to help the sun in this world,「在這個世界裡,沒有必要去幫助太陽,
Nor the lion or the universal monarch.也不必幫助獅子或轉輪王。
The Bodhisattva sitting with resolve for awakening菩薩以堅定的決心坐著,準備覺悟。
Surely does not need any helpers.”定然不需要任何幫助者。
21.107At that point, in order to weaken the strength of the demons, the Bodhisattva turned his face, which resembled a blooming lotus with one hundred petals, toward them. Upon seeing the Bodhisattva’s face, Māra took flight. But while fleeing, he had the thought that his army could withstand the sight of the Bodhisattva’s face, and he once again turned back.
21.107此時,為了減弱這些魔的力量,菩薩轉過他那張如同盛開的百葉蓮花般的臉,朝向他們。當看到菩薩的臉時,魔轉身逃走了。但在逃離的途中,他想到他的軍隊能夠承受菩薩臉龐的景象,於是他再次轉身回來。
Assisted by his followers, he now began to hurl various weapons upon the Bodhisattva. However, even when they threw mountains as big as the central mountain at the Bodhisattva, the mountains all turned into flower canopies and celestial palaces. Those with poisonous gazes, those with poisonous snakes, and those with poisonous breath shot flames of fire at the Bodhisattva. Yet this circle of fire just turned into what seemed to be the Bodhisattva’s halo of light.
魔王在隨從的幫助下,開始向菩薩投擲各種武器。然而,即使他們向菩薩投擲如同中央須彌山那般巨大的山峰,這些山峰也都轉變成了花蓋和天宮。那些具有毒眼的魔、帶著毒蛇的魔,以及呼出毒氣的魔都向菩薩噴射火焰。然而這圈火焰卻化成了菩薩的光輪。
21.108The Bodhisattva now touched his right hand to his head. Māra perceived that the Bodhisattva was brandishing a sword in his hand, and so he fled toward the south. However, thinking that it could not be true after all, he again returned. [F.155.b] When he came back, the demons began to hurl all sorts of terrifying weapons at the Bodhisattva. They threw swords, arrows, darts, lances, axes, clubs, javelins, bludgeons, discuses, vajras, hammers, uprooted trees, rocks, lassos, and iron balls. However, as soon as the demons released the weapons, the weapons turned into garlands and canopies of flowers, and a cooling rain of flower petals fell on the ground. The flower garlands hung as adornments on the Bodhi tree.
21.108菩薩現在將右手觸向自己的頭部。魔看到菩薩在手中揮舞著一把劍,於是向南方逃去。然而,他思考著這終究不可能是真的,所以又回頭了。當他回來時,眾魔開始向菩薩投擲各種可怕的武器。他們投擲劍、箭、飛鏢、槍、斧、棍棒、標槍、鈍器、圓盤、金剛杵、錘子、連根拔起的樹木、石頭、繩索和鐵球。然而,魔剛一放出這些武器,武器就變成了花環和花蓋,一陣清涼的花瓣雨落在地上。花環懸掛在菩提樹上作為裝飾。
21.109When Māra, the evil one, witnessed the Bodhisattva’s power and the displays that he performed, his mind was disturbed with jealousy and avarice. He called out to the Bodhisattva, “Listen, young prince, get up! Get up and relish your kingship—your virtue lies precisely in doing that! On what grounds could you ever attain liberation?” [318]
21.109當魔王見到菩薩的力量和他所顯現的種種神變時,他的心被嫉妒和貪婪所擾亂。他對菩薩喊道:「聽著,王子,起來吧!起來吧,享受你的王權吧——你的德行正是在於這樣做!你憑什麼能夠證得解脫呢?」
21.110The Bodhisattva answered Māra, the evil one, with words that were firm, profound, vast, gentle, and sweet:
21.110菩薩用堅定、深遠、廣大、溫柔、甘美的言語回答魔王:
“You, evil one! Through just a single unstinting act of giving, you have become lord of the desire realm. I, on the other hand, have performed trillions of unstinting acts of giving. I have cut off my hands, legs, eyes, and my head, and given them to beggars. With the intention to liberate sentient beings, I have often given beggars my house, wealth, grains, beds, clothes, and parks.”
「魔啊!你只是通過一次無盡的布施,就成為了欲界的主人。而我卻已經進行了千億次無盡的布施。我曾經割下自己的手、腿、眼睛和頭顱,全部施給乞者。為了解脫眾生,我經常把自己的房屋、財富、谷物、床鋪、衣服和園林都施給乞者。」
21.111Māra, the evil one, replied with this verse:
“Previously I made a wholesome act of giving;「我過去曾經做過一個善業的布施;
It was an unstinting act, and you are my witness.這是無悋惜的布施行為,而你就是我的見證人。
But you have no witness to your acts,但是你的善業沒有證人。
So there is no point in speaking of them, and instead you will be conquered.”所以說這些沒有意義,反而你將被征服。
21.112The Bodhisattva replied, “Evil one, the earth here is my witness.”
21.112菩薩回答說:「魔王啊,這裡的大地就是我的證人。」
He then embraced Māra, the evil one, and his demonic retinue with thoughts of love and compassion. Like a lion, he was without fear, fright, anxiety, timidity, [F.156.a] disturbance, and perturbation. He had no goose bumps, which indicate fear. He now let his right hand slide over his entire body and then gracefully tapped on the earth—the hand that had the contours of a conch, a victory banner, a fish, a vase, a swastika, an iron hook, and a wheel. The hand’s fingers were connected by a web. Its nails were exquisite and copper colored. Soft and supple, it looked perfectly youthful. All this was the result of limitless eons of gathering the accumulations of basic goodness. He then spoke this verse:
他用慈愛和慈悲的心擁抱了魔王和他的魔眷屬。他像獅子一樣無所畏懼,沒有恐懼、驚嚇、焦慮、膽怯、不安和煩亂。他沒有起雞皮疙瘩這樣表示害怕的反應。他現在讓右手在整個身體上滑過,然後優雅地輕點地面——這隻手具有海螺、勝利幢、魚、花瓶、卍字、鐵鉤和法輪的輪廓。手指之間連著蹼。指甲精緻而呈銅色。柔軟而靈活,看起來完全年輕有力。這一切都是無量劫以來積聚基本善行福德資糧的結果。然後他說出了這個偈頌:

21.114As soon as the Bodhisattva touched this great earth, it shook in six different ways. It quivered, trembled, and quaked, and it boomed, thundered, and roared. Just as a Magadhan brass cauldron, when struck with a wooden log, chimes and reverberates, [319] so did this great earth sound and reverberate when struck by the Bodhisattva with his hand. [B14]
21.114菩薩一接觸到這片大地,大地就以六種方式震動。它搖晃、顫抖、震撼,並發出隆隆聲、雷鳴聲和咆哮聲。就像摩揭陀國的銅鼎被木棒敲打時會發出清脆的迴響一樣,當菩薩用手拍打這片大地時,大地也發出聲響並迴盪開去。
21.115Then the earth goddess in this great trichiliocosm who is called Sthāvarā, along with her retinue of one billion earth goddesses, began to shake the entire great earth. Not far from where the Bodhisattva was sitting, she broke through the earth’s surface and revealed her upper body, adorned with all sorts of jewels. She bowed toward the Bodhisattva, joined her palms, and said to him, “You are right. Great Being, you are right. It is just as you say. We bear witness to this. But still, my Lord, you alone are the supreme witness in the worlds of gods and humans and the supreme authority.” [F.156.b]
21.115於是這大千世界的堅牢地神,以及隨同她的十億位地女眷屬,開始震動整個大地。她在菩薩坐處不遠的地方破土而出,露出上身,用各種寶石裝飾著。她向菩薩敬禮,合掌對他說:「您說的完全正確,大士啊,您說的完全正確。正如您所說的那樣。我們為此作證。但是,我的世尊啊,在天神和人類的世界中,唯有您是最高的見證者,是最高的權威。」
Having spoken thus, the earth goddess Sthāvarā rebuked Māra, the evil one, in many ways, and praised the Bodhisattva again and again. She made a great display of her myriad powers and then disappeared together with her following there and then.
地神堅牢地神如此說道後,以多種方式訶責邪惡的魔,一次又一次地讚歎菩薩。她展現了她無數的力,然後與她的眷屬一起在那裡消失了。
When the wicked one and his army heard that sound from the earth,當那邪惡者和他的軍隊聽到來自大地的聲音時,
Frightened and disheartened, they all fled,驚恐喪膽,全都逃散了,
Just like jackals in the forest hearing the lion’s roar,就像森林裡的豺狼聽到獅子的吼聲,
Or crows taking flight when a rock is thrown.或像烏鴉被石頭擲中後飛逃而去。
21.117Now Māra, the evil one, felt unhappy and full of suffering. Still, even though he was miserable and ashamed of himself, he was overpowered by pride to such an extent that he could not leave; he could not turn back and flee. Therefore, he turned to his men and spoke:
21.117此時,魔王心中不悅,充滿了痛苦。雖然他感到悲慘、羞愧,但卻被慢心所壓制,以至於無法離開,無法轉身逃跑。因此,他轉向他的部眾說道:
21.118“All of you! Wait a while until we find out whether it is possible to arouse the Bodhisattva by polite persuasion. Such a jewel of a being should not be killed outright.” [320]
21.118「你們所有人!先等一下,讓我們查明一下是否有可能通過溫和的勸說來打動這位菩薩。這樣珍貴的生命不應該被直接殺害。」
21.119Then Māra, the evil one, spoke to his daughters: “Girls, you must go now to the seat of awakening and examine the Bodhisattva. Does he have desires or not? Is he deluded or intelligent? Is he like a blind man, or does he know the country and seek advantage? And is he weak or strong?”
21.119那時,惡魔魔王對他的女兒們說:「女兒們,你們現在要去菩提座,察看菩薩。他是否有貪慾?他是否迷惑或者智慧?他是如同盲人,還是認識國土並尋求利益?他是軟弱還是強大?」
21.120When they heard these words, these divine maidens went to the seat of awakening where the Bodhisattva was. They assembled in front of the Bodhisattva and began displaying the thirty-two ways of female trickery. What are these thirty-two ways? They are as follows:
21.120這些天女聽到這些話後,就前往菩提座,來到菩薩所在之處。她們聚集在菩薩面前,開始展現三十二種女性的欺騙技巧。這三十二種方式是什麼呢?它們如下:
1. Some of the girls partially covered their faces.
2. Some showed off their firm and voluptuous breasts.
3. Some smiled at him and flashed their teeth.
4. Some lifted their arms, waving them in the air to reveal their armpits.
5. Some flaunted their lips, red like bimba fruit.
6. Some looked at the Bodhisattva through half-closed eyes and then quickly closed their eyes.
7. Some showed off their half-covered breasts. [F.157.a]
8. Some loosened their clothes to reveal their hips adorned with girdles.
9. Some wore fine, transparent clothes that revealed their hips and their girdles.
10. Some made clinking sounds with their anklets.
11. Some showed their breasts adorned with strings of pearls.
12. Some showed off their half-naked thighs.
13. Some displayed jays, parrots, and myna birds sitting on their heads and shoulders.
14. Some cast sidelong glances at the Bodhisattva.
15. Some wore good clothes, yet let them hang improperly.
16. Some made the chains on their hips shake and twinkle.
17. Some mischievously moved back and forth in a flirtatious manner.
20. Some flirted and acted shy.
21. Some shook their thighs like a palm tree moved by the wind.
22. Some let out deep moans. [321]
23. Some dressed in transparent cloth with bells hanging from the string at their waist and walked around giggling.
有些人穿著透明的衣布,在腰部的繩子上掛著鈴鐺,邊走邊咯咯笑著。
24. Some stripped off all their clothes and jewelry.
25. Some showed off all their jewelry, both the secret and the apparent.
有些人炫耀所有的珠寶飾物,無論是隱秘的還是顯露的。
26. Some showed their arms, which had been rubbed with perfume.
27. Some displayed their earrings anointed with perfume.
28. Some covered their face with a veil and then suddenly revealed it.
29. Some laughed, played, and had fun, trying to attract each other’s attention. But then they again pretended to be shy.
29. 有些仙女歡笑嬉戲、玩耍取樂,試圖吸引彼此的注意力。但隨即又假作羞怯。
30. Some of them showed off their virgin bodies that had never given birth.
31. Some tried to lure the Bodhisattva with offers of love.
32. Some scattered flower petals on the Bodhisattva.
21.121Standing before the Bodhisattva, they pondered what his thoughts might be as they looked at his face. Did he look at them with his senses aroused? [F.157.b] Or did he look into the distance? They looked to see if he was excited or not.
21.121她們站在菩薩面前,看著他的臉龐,思考著他的心念。他是用被激動的感官來看待她們嗎?還是目光遠眺?她們想看他是否有任何興奮的跡象。
21.122The face of the Bodhisattva, however, remained as pure and stainless as the orb of the full moon when it escapes the mouth of Rāhu, or the sun rising in the early dawn, or a golden pillar, or a blooming thousand-petaled lotus, or a sacrificial fire sprinkled with oil. Like the central mountain, it remained unmoving. Like the surrounding mountains, it was truly elevated. He guarded his senses well and, like the elephant, his look was that of someone with a mind well tamed.
21.122菩薩的面容卻保持清淨無垢,如同滿月從羅睺的口中逃脫時一樣,或如晨曦中升起的太陽,或如黃金柱,或如盛開的千瓣蓮花,或如灑油的祭祀之火。它如同中央須彌山一樣,保持不動。它如同周圍的山峰一樣,確實高聳。他守護好了自己的感官,如同大象一樣,他的目光是那種心意已被良好調伏者的目光。
21.123Now the daughters of Māra, in a further attempt to arouse the Bodhisattva’s desires, spoke these verses to him:
21.123此時,魔的女兒們為了進一步激起菩薩的貪慾,於是向他說出這些偈頌:
“Springtime is here, the best of seasons;「春天已至,乃四時中最佳的季節;
Let us frolic, dear, while the trees are in bloom.我們一起嬉遊歡樂吧,親愛的,趁著樹木正盛開花朵。
Your body is so beautiful and attractive;你的身體是如此美麗而迷人;
It is enticing, has auspicious marks, and is well adorned. [322]它令人著迷,具有吉祥的相,並且裝飾得很好。
“We were born beautiful and with perfect curves;「我們生來美麗,身形完美無缺;
We are here to please gods and humans and grant complete satisfaction.我們來此是為了悅樂天神和人類,並且給予圓滿的滿足。
Awakening is hard to gain, so change your mind;覺悟是難以獲得的,所以要改變你的想法;
Quick, stand up and enjoy the prime of youth!快起來,盡享青春年華吧!
“It is for your sake that we have come here, all dressed up and adorned;「我們為了你的緣故而來到這裡,全都打扮得漂漂亮亮;
Come now, take a look at these divine girls so beautifully adorned.來吧,看看這些天界的女子,打扮得如此美麗。
Who would not be thrilled when enjoying the passion of love?誰在享受慈愛的熱情時不會感到歡喜呢?
Even a decayed tree would be brought back to life!即使是枯樹也會因此而重獲生命!
“Our voices are soft and our scent is delicious;「我們的聲音柔和,香氣芬芳;
Our faces look their best with diadems, earrings, and makeup.我們的臉龐用頭飾、耳環和化妝品來裝飾,看起來最為美麗。
Our faces have beautiful brows and are well anointed;我們的面容眉毛秀麗,並且塗抹著香油。
Our beautiful eyes are as pure and large as lotuses.我們美麗的眼睛清淨寬大如蓮花。
“Our faces resemble the full moon;我們的臉如同圓滿的月輪;
Our lips are like ripe bimba fruit;我們的嘴唇像成熟的木瓜一樣。
Our teeth are white like conch shells, jasmine flowers, or snow.我們的牙齒潔白如螺貝、茉莉花或白雪。
So, O Beloved, look at us who ardently desire pleasure.所以,親愛的啊,請看著我們這些熱切渴望樂受的人。
“Look at our firm and voluptuous breasts,「看看我們堅挺豐滿的乳房,
The beautiful three folds on our bellies,我們腹部美麗的三道褶皺,
And our broad and beautiful hips.還有我們寬闊美麗的臀部。
Lord, look at us, such beautiful maidens.世尊,請看我們,如此美麗的少女。
“Our thighs resemble the trunk of an elephant; [F.158.a]「我們的大腿好像象的鼻子一樣;
Our arms are bedecked with abutting bracelets; [323]我們的手臂飾以相互貼靠的手鐲;
Our hips are adorned with beautiful chains.我們的腰部用美麗的鍊子裝飾。
Lord, look at us, your servants.世尊,請看著我們,您的僕人們。
“With the gait of a swan, we gently approach you;「我們以天鵝的步態,溫柔地靠近您;
Soft and beautiful, we talk of amorous love.溫柔美麗,我們談論著慈愛。
Beautifully adorned as we are,我們裝飾得如此美麗,
We are experts in divine pleasures.我們是天樂的專家。
“We are well trained in singing, playing instruments, and theatrical performance;我們在歌唱、樂器演奏和戲劇表演方面訓練有素;
We are born with perfect bodies for the sake of pleasure.我們生來就擁有完美的身體,是為了享受樂受。
If you don’t accept us now, as we crave pleasure,如果你現在不接納我們,因為我們渴望樂受,
You will quickly become a loser in this world.你在這個世界上會很快變成失敗者。
“What man would run away when he sees a treasure?「誰會在看到寶藏時逃跑呢?
You will be exactly like that, ignorant of the treasure, which is love,你將完全像那樣,對寶藏無知,而那寶藏就是慈。
If you remain ignorant of amorous passion如果你依然不懂愛慾之事
And fail to enjoy these young girls, who have come of their own will.”而無法享受這些自願前來的年輕女子。
21.133Monks, the Bodhisattva just smiled with unblinking eyes. He sat there smiling, with calm senses, physically at ease, resplendent, without attachment, free from anger, and without delusion. Like the king of mountains he was immutable, confident, unconfused, and untroubled. Since he had totally abandoned, all by himself, all disturbing emotions through his well-established intelligence and wisdom, he now spoke with soft and pleasant words in a tone that exceeded even the voice of Brahmā. His voice was like that of a cuckoo, pleasant and sweet sounding, as he addressed Māra’s daughters with these verses:
21.133比丘們,菩薩只是面帶微笑,目光清澈。他坐在那裡微笑著,感官寧靜,身體安適,光彩熠熠,沒有執著,不存瞋怒,也沒有癡迷。就像山中之王一樣,他堅定不移,充滿信心,思路清晰,心無煩擾。由於他通過自己建立的智慧,完全徹底地放棄了一切煩惱,他現在用溫柔悅耳的言辭說話,音聲超越了梵天的聲相。他的聲音如同杜鵑鳥一樣,悅耳動聽,向魔的女兒們說出以下偈頌:
“Desire results in a great deal of suffering; it is the root of suffering.「貪欲導致很多苦,它是苦的根源。」
For the unwise, desire ruins their concentration, magical ability, and austerities;對於愚癡的人,貪欲會毀壞他們的定、神通和苦行;
The wise say that chasing women brings no satisfaction. [324]智者說追求女人無法得到滿足。
I will satisfy the unskillful ones with wisdom.我將用智慧滿足那些不善的人。
“The thirst of someone who pursues desires increases evermore,「追求欲望的人,其貪渴會不斷增長,
Just like one feels after drinking salty water.就像喝了鹹水之後的感受一樣。
If I were to engage in that, there would be no benefit to me or to others,如果我去從事那樣的事,對我和對他人都沒有利益,
And I delight in being useful to both myself and to others.我喜悅於對自己和他人都有益處。
“Your beauty is like water bubbles or foam; [F.158.b]「你的美貌如同水泡或泡沫;
Like magical colors, it is merely mentally created.像幻化的色彩一樣,它只是心所造作的。
Like a play or a dream, it is unstable and impermanent;像一齣戲劇或一場夢一樣,它是不穩定和無常的;
It deludes the minds of childish beings.它迷惑了幼稚眾生的心智。
“The eyes are like water bubbles—they are enclosed in a membrane,「眼睛像水泡一樣——被薄膜包裹著,
Like clotted blood is enclosed in a suppurating ulcer.如同膿瘡中包裹著凝結的血液。
The belly is one big load of urine and excrement, excreting filth;腹部是一大堆尿液和糞便,排泄著污穢;
This mechanism of suffering has emerged from karma and disturbing emotions.這苦的機制,已經從業和煩惱而生起。
“It is the deluded people with childish minds, not the wise ones,「就是那些心智幼稚、被迷惑的人,而不是智慧的人,
Who mistakenly perceive the body as beautiful.誤認身體為美麗的人。
This makes them spin for a long time in cyclic existence, the source of suffering;這使他們在輪迴中長期旋轉,輪迴是苦的根源;
Their suffering, experienced in hell, is extremely painful.他們在地獄中經歷的苦是極其痛苦的。
“From the crotch, awful smells are leaked;「從陰部洩漏出令人厭惡的香氣;
The thighs, the calves, and the feet are joined together like a mechanical contraption.大腿、小腿和腳連在一起,就像一個機械裝置。
When I examine you, I see that you are like an illusion,當我觀察你時,我看到你如同一個幻像,
Which has deceptively emerged from causes and conditions. [325]它虛偽地從因緣中顯現。[325]
“When seeing that sensual enjoyments are without good qualities,"當看見欲樂沒有善的特性時,
And that they lead away from the noble path of wisdom,而且它們引導遠離智慧的聖道。
And that they are the same as poisonous plants or fires, or like angry vipers,它們就像有毒的植物、火焰或憤怒的毒蛇一樣。
Only fools would call them ‘happiness.’只有愚人才會稱之為「喜樂」。
“Whoever becomes a slave of women through desire「被貪欲所奴役而沈溺於女色的人」
Will stray from discipline, from concentration, and lose common sense.會遠離戒律,遠離定,喪失理智。
Wallowing in pleasure, he will be far removed from wisdom沈溺於樂受中,他將遠離智慧。
If he discards his joy in the Dharma and delights in desire.如果他舍棄了對法的喜悅,而沉迷於貪欲的享樂。
“I have neither attachment nor anger;「我既沒有執著,也沒有瞋恨;
I do not perceive anything permanent, attractive, or with a self.我不認知任何恆常、吸引人或具有我的事物。
I do not feel dislike or joy;我既不感到厭惡,也不感到喜悅;
My mind is free, like the wind in the sky.我的心念自由,如同天空中的風。
“Even if the whole world were filled with the likes of you「即使整個世界都充滿了像你這樣的存在
Who besieged me here, for eons on end,誰在這裡圍困我,經歷無數劫以來,
I would not feel anger, attachment, or delusion,我不會感受到瞋、執著或癡,
Because the mind of the victorious ones is like the sky. [F.159.a]因為勝者的心如同虛空。
“Although the gods and goddesses in their purity and splendor「雖然天神和天女們以其清淨和光耀,
Have no blood or bones,沒有血液或骨骼,
They all live in great fear他們都生活在極大的恐懼中
Since they lack permanence and cannot endure.”因為他們缺乏常性,無法永遠存在。
21.145At that point Māra’s daughters, skilled as they were in female deception, felt even greater lust, haughtiness, and pride. They displayed love gestures, showed off their adorned bodies, and tried even further female trickery in their attempts to seduce the Bodhisattva. [326]
21.145此時魔的女兒們,擅長女性欺騙之術,感到更加強烈的貪慾、傲慢和慢心。她們展現出慈愛的姿態,炫耀自己裝飾華麗的身體,並施展更進一步的女性詭計來引誘菩薩。
21.146On this topic, it is said:
The most seductive and sweet girls, Tṛṣṇā, Rati , and Arati,渴愛、樂受、不樂這三位最具誘惑力、最甜蜜的女子,
These three graceful ones hastily arrived, sent by Māra.這三位姿態優雅的女子匆匆趕來,是魔派遣的。
They danced like the shoots of young creepers on a tree blowing in the breeze她們舞動的姿態,如同樹上的嫩藤在微風中搖曳。
To stir lust in the prince sitting under the tree branches.為了在坐於樹枝下的王子心中激起貪慾。
Among all seasons, springtime is the best;在所有季節中,春季是最美好的;
At this time men and women frolic, and darkness and dust disappear.此時男女嬉戲歡樂,黑暗和塵埃消散。
Cuckoos, swans, and peacocks call out, and flocks of birds fill the air;布穀鳥、天鵝和孔雀齊聲鳴唱,群鳥充滿天空;
The time to experience the joys of pleasure has arrived.享受樂受喜悅的時刻已經到來。
For thousands of eons he delighted in discipline, austerities, and hardships;他經歷了數千劫的時間,在戒律、苦行和困苦中感受喜悅。
He is immutable like the king of mountains, with a body like the rising sun.他如山王一樣堅定不變,身體如同升起的太陽。
Like roaring thunder, his beautiful voice resounds like that of the king of beasts;他的聲音如雷鳴般響亮,如百獸之王一樣悅耳動人。
This person, who benefits others, utters only meaningful words.這個人,利益他人,只說有意義的言語。
Desire, disputes, hostility, and strife bring the fear of death;貪欲、爭執、敵意和爭鬥帶來了死亡的恐懼;
Ignorant fools engage in them continually, yet the skilled ones renounce them.愚癡的人不斷沉溺其中,然而有智慧的人卻棄捨它們。
This is the time when the Well-Gone One attains immortality,這是善逝達到不死的時刻,
So today he will conquer Māra and become a worthy one with the ten powers.因此今天他將戰勝魔,成為具足十力的應供。
After many magical displays, they said, “You, with your lotus-like face, listen to us.經歷許多神奇的顯現後,他們說:「你這位蓮花般面容的人,請聽我們說。」
You will become a king, a supreme ruler, a powerful master of the earth;你將成為國王,成為至高無上的統治者,成為大地的強大主宰;

Of what use is the dress of a sage to you? Give that up and enjoy pleasures instead.”賢者的衣著對你有什麼用呢?放棄那些,去享受樂受吧。
21.151The Bodhisattva replied: [327]
“I will be the master of the three realms, venerated by gods and humans; [F.159.b]「我將成為三界的主宰,受到天神和人類的尊敬;」
I will be a king who travels by the wheel of Dharma, endowed with ten powers.我將成為一位以法輪而行的國王,具足十力。
A million seekers, and those with no more need for learning, will always bow to me;百萬求道者與已無需修學者,將永遠向我頂禮。
Because I enjoy the Dharma, I no longer seek joyful objects.”因為我喜愛法,所以不再追求快樂的對象。
21.152The daughters said:
“For as long as your youth has not passed and you are in your prime,「只要你的青春還未逝去,你正處在人生盛年,
For as long as disease has not struck you and you are not old and gray haired,只要病還沒有侵襲你,你還沒有衰老和白髮蒼蒼,
For as long as you have your beauty and youth, and we, too, are happy,只要你保有你的美貌和青春,而我們也感到歡喜,
For so long you should enjoy the pleasures of love with a smile on your face.”在這段時間,你應該帶著微笑享受慈愛的樂受。
21.153The Bodhisattva replied:
“Until I attain perfect freedom and immortality, so difficult to attain,「直到我證得涅槃與不死,這是極難證得的,」
Until I am rid of the suffering and bondage in the realms of gods and demigods,直到我擺脫天界與阿修羅界中的苦惱與束縛,
Until old age, disease, and death show their angry faces,直到老、病、死這些苦惱現出它們的怒容,
For so long I will train on the auspicious path that leads to the city of fearlessness.”我將長期修行那條通往無畏城的吉祥之道。
21.154The daughters said:
“In the divine realm you, like Śakra, will be surrounded by divine maidens;「在天界裡,你將像釋提桓因一樣,被天女們圍繞;
In the Heaven Free from Strife, the Heaven Fully Free from Strife, and the Heaven of Joy, you will be praised by the best of immortals.在兜率天、善現天和喜樂天中,你將受到最殊勝的天人讚美。
In the realm of Māra, enthralled by amorous women, you will find the pleasures of love;在魔的領域裡,被迷人的女性所吸引,你將獲得慈愛的樂受;
Relish playing with us—it will bring great pleasure!”享受與我們一起遊玩吧——這會帶來大樂!
21.155The Bodhisattva replied: [328]
“Desire is ephemeral like dew on the tip of grass, or like autumn clouds;「貪如草尖上的露水般短暫易逝,如秋雲般片刻即散;
Desire is terrifying like the wrath of the nāga girls.貪慾令人恐怖,就像龍女的憤怒一樣。
Śakra, the gods in the Heaven Free from Strife, and the gods in the Heaven of Joy, all fall under the sway of Māra;釋提桓因、兜率天的天神以及喜樂天的天神,都被魔所控制;
Desire plagues all ignoble ones, so how could anyone rejoice in that?”貪欲折磨所有不聖之人,誰又怎能為此而歡喜呢?
21.156The daughters said:
“Look at these beautiful trees with fresh leaves and blooming flowers;「看這些樹木,葉子翠綠,花朵盛開,美麗極了;」
They resound with the cries of pheasants, cuckoo birds, and the humming of bees.那裡充滿了雉雞、杜鵑鳥的啼叫聲和蜜蜂的嗡鳴聲。
On the ground grows fresh green grass, so soft and thick;地上生長著嫩綠的青草,柔軟而茂密。
Will you, the lion of men, enjoy yourself with us young girls in a pleasure grove?”「你這人中的獅子,願意和我們年輕的女孩們一起在遊園中享樂嗎?」
21.157The Bodhisattva replied:
“All of these trees produce shoots and flowers according to seasons,「這些樹木都按照季節生長新芽和花朵,
And bees also seek out flowers because of suffering from hunger and thirst.蜜蜂也因為飢渴的苦而尋求花朵。
Since everything that grows from the ground will wither under the sun, [F.160.a]既然一切從地面生長出來的東西都會在陽光下枯萎,
I have resolved to actualize the nectar that all victorious ones have enjoyed.”我已經決定要實現所有勝者都享受過的甘露。
21.158Māra’s daughters insisted:
“Look at us! Our faces are like the moon and like fresh lotus flowers;「看著我們!我們的臉龐像月亮一樣,像盛開的蓮花一樣美麗;
Our speech is soft and pleasant, and our teeth as white as snow or silver.我們的言語柔和悅耳,牙齒潔白如雪或銀色。
Such beauties are rare among the gods, so how about among humans?這樣的美貌在天神當中都很罕見,更何況在人類當中呢?
These women that you have here are even desired by the highest of gods.”你們這裡的這些女人,甚至連最高的天神都會貪戀。
21.159The Bodhisattva replied:
“I see the body as impure, filled with masses of worms;「我把身體看作不淨,充滿了許多蟲蛆;
It easily breaks and perishes, and is thoroughly without pleasure. [329]它容易破壞和毀滅,完全沒有快樂。
Yet I will attain that imperishable state, venerated by the wise,然而我將證得那不壞法,為智者所恭敬,
The state that brings ultimate happiness to the animate and inanimate worlds.”能為有情與無情世界帶來究竟快樂的不壞法。
The daughters now put on sixty-four displays of amorous behavior;這些女兒現在展現出六十四種嬌媚的舉動;
They rang their anklets and girdles and let their clothes slip off.她們搖動腳環和腰帶,讓衣服滑落。
Struck with the arrow of desire, infatuated, with smiles on their faces, they said,被貪箭所射中,心神迷醉,面帶微笑,她們說道:
“Lord, do we appear so ugly to you that you don’t share our love?”「世尊,我們在您眼中是否如此醜陋,以至於您不願與我們分享慈愛?」
Knowing the faults in all of saṃsāra, the Stainless One replied,了知輪迴中的一切煩惱,無垢者如是回答,
“Desire is like a sword, a spear, a trident, or a razor blade smeared with honey;「貪如同劍、槍、三叉戟或塗蜜的刀片;
It is like the head of a viper or a fire pit—that much I have realized.如同毒蛇的頭顱或火坑——我對此已有所領悟。
So, since women steal one’s virtues, I have abandoned their company.”所以,既然女人會竊取一個人的德行,我已經放棄了與她們的往來。
With all the billions of skills that induce amorous infatuation,擁有所有數十億種能引發愛戀的技巧,
The girls were unable to seduce the Well-Gone One who has the gait of a young elephant.這些女子無法誘惑那位善逝,他行走的姿態如年輕的象一般。
So with shame and embarrassment, they now bowed to the feet of the Sage;於是,她們帶著羞愧和尷尬,現在向聖者的足下頂禮。
Giving rise to respect, joy, and love, they praised the Benefactor:生起恭敬、喜悅和慈愛,她們讚歎世尊:
“Your face is like the spotless center of a lotus, or the harvest moon;「你的面容如同蓮花無垢的中心,或如秋月皎潔;
Your luster is like the flames of a sacrificial fire, or the shine of the golden mountain.你的光輝如同祭祀之火的火焰,或黃金山的光芒。
May your wishes and vows, which you have made in hundreds of lives, be fulfilled;願你在百生中所發的誓願和心願,都得以實現;
Now that you yourself have crossed, please liberate all suffering beings.”既然你自己已經獲得解脫,請解救所有苦難的眾生。
They praised the one who is like the bayur tree, or the campaka; [F.160.b]他們讚歎那位如旃檀樹或金色花一般的至尊者。
They circumambulated the Supreme Being, who was immutable like a majestic mountain.他們右繞至尊者,他如同雄偉的山嶽一樣堅定不移。
Returning, they bowed their heads to their father and told him,他們回到父親身邊,向父親低頭敬禮並稟告他。
“Father, this master of gods and humans has no fear or anger. [330]「父親,這位天神和人類的主人沒有恐懼或瞋。」
“With a smiling face he looks on with eyes like lotus petals;「他用盛開的蓮花般的眼睛,帶著笑容注視眾生;

Mount Meru may tremble, the oceans dry up, and the sun and moon fall,須彌山可能會震動,海洋會乾涸,太陽和月亮會墜落,
But never will He Who Sees the Faults of the Three Existences come under the sway of amorous women.”但觀三界過者絕不會被愛欲的女性所迷惑。
21.166When Māra, the evil one, heard these words, he felt even more miserable and unhappy. Angry and disappointed, he told his daughters, “Oh my, that stupid fool, so ignorant that he doesn’t see your beauty and good looks! How can it be that we are unable to get him away from the seat of awakening?”
21.166魔王聽到這些話後,感到更加痛苦和不快樂。他憤怒而失望,對他的女兒們說:「唉呀,那個愚蠢的傻瓜,太無知了,竟然看不到你們的美貌和姣好的容貌!我們怎麼可能無法把他從菩提座上引誘離開呢?」
21.167Then once again, the daughters of Māra spoke to their father in verse:

“Although we speak to him softly and lovingly, he does not get aroused;「雖然我們溫柔親愛地與他說話,他卻不會變得激動;」
Even though we show him the most secret of things, he does not get hostile.即使我們向他展示最隱祕的事物,他也不會變得充滿敵意。
No matter what acts he witnesses, he remains without delusion;無論他目睹什麼行為,他都保持不被癡迷所縛。
Although he sees the entire body, his thoughts remain profound.雖然他看到整個身體,但他的思想保持深遠。
“He clearly realizes the faults of women;他清楚地認識到女性的煩惱;
He is far removed from lust and has no desire.他遠離貪慾,沒有貪。
Neither in divine abodes, nor here on earth, is there a human or a god無論在天界的住所,還是在人間,都沒有人類或天神
Capable of gauging his mind and actions.能夠洞察他的心念和業行。
“Father, we tried every female trick on him!「父親,我們對他用盡了所有女人的把戲!
With all our lust, surely his heart should have melted!我們用盡了所有的貪慾,他的心應該早就軟化了!
Yet, although he saw it all, his mind wasn’t distracted even once;然而,雖然他看見了一切,他的心卻沒有被迷惑過一次。
Like the foremost king of mountains, he was immutable. [331]如同眾山之王般,他堅不可摧。[331]
“He accumulated the splendors of hundreds of virtues and qualities;「他積累了百般德行和品質的光輝;
For many millions of eons he has practiced ethics and disciplined conduct.他在數百萬劫以來修行戒德和清淨的行為。
The gods and Brahmā, pure beings possessing the splendor of virtue,天神和梵天,具有清淨德行光輝的清淨者,
Pay homage to him and touch their heads to his feet.向他頂禮,以頭觸其足。
“Once he conquers Māra’s army,「一旦他征服了魔的軍隊,
He will surely attain sacred awakening, just as the victorious ones did in the past. [F.161.a]他定會證得無上菩提,如同過去的勝者們一樣。[F.161.a]
Father, he does not seek fights or quarrels with us;父親,他不尋求與我們的戰鬥或爭執;
Even though our forces are powerful, our task would be a difficult one.雖然我們的力量強大,但我們的任務將會是困難的。
“Father, look at the sky, where millions of perfect Bodhisattvas,「父親啊,請看天空,那裡有無數完美菩薩,
With jewels on the top of their heads, respectfully wait.頭頂裝飾著寶石,恭敬地等待。
On their limbs these sources of wealth are adorned with flower garlands;他們的四肢上用花環裝飾著這些財富的來源;

Trees, mountains, gods, yakṣas, and garuḍas,樹木、山嶺、天神、夜叉和金翅鳥,
All bow down to that mountain of qualities.都恭敬地向著那座功德之山禮拜。
Father, it would be better to leave him alone today.”父親,還是讓他今天獨自待著比較好。
One will not cross where one cannot reach the end;不會渡過自己無法到達彼岸的地方;
One will not dig where one cannot pull out the root.一個人不會在無法拔除根源的地方挖掘。
One cannot make him angry, or even make him suffer with forbearance;無法使他生氣,也無法用忍辱來讓他受苦。
One can do nothing that would make him unhappy.”沒有什麼能讓他不快樂。
21.175Monks, at that point the eight goddesses dwelling in the tree of awakening—Śrī, Vṛddhi, Tapā, Śreyasī, Vidu, Ojobalā, Satyavādinī, and Samaṅginī—[332] honored the Bodhisattva, glorified him evoking the sixteen types of splendor, and praised him:
21.175比丘們,此時住在覺樹中的八位天女——吉祥天、毘陀黎、熱女神、妙女神、毘度、力光、真語女神和等行女——尊敬菩薩,讚頌他展現十六種光輝,並稱讚他說:
“Sacred One, you are beautiful,「聖者,你是美麗的,
Like the moon during the bright fortnight.如同光明半月時的月亮一樣。
With your pure mind, you are radiant,以你清淨的心,你光彩照人,
Like the sun at dawn.如同黎明時的太陽。
“Pure Being, you have bloomed,清淨者,你已經綻放,
Like a lotus in a pond.如同池塘裡的蓮花。
Pure Being, you roar,清淨者,你吼嘯著,
Like a lion with a mane, moving in the jungle.如獅子鬃毛飄揚,遊行於叢林之中。
“Supreme Being, you shine forth,至尊者,你光芒閃耀,
Like the king of mountains in the middle of the ocean.如同大海中央的山王。
Pure Being, you are elevated,清淨者,你是崇高的,
Like the ring of surrounding mountains.猶如圍繞的山環。
“Supreme Being, you are hard to fathom,至尊者,你難以測度,
Like the ocean rich in jewels.如同富饒珍寶的大海。
Protector of the World, your mind is vast,世間保護者,您的心念廣大,
Like the unlimited sky.如同無限的天空。
“Pure Being, your mind is firm;清淨者,你的心堅定不移;
Like the earth, you sustain all beings. [F.161.b]如同大地,你承持一切眾生。
Supreme Being, your mind is never turbid;至尊者,你的心念永遠不濁;
Like the lake Anavapta , it is always calm.如同無熱惱池,恆常寂靜。
“Supreme Being, your mind is without a fixed abode;至尊者,你的心沒有固定的住處;
Like wind, it never lingers anywhere in the world.如風一般,在世界中永不停留。
Supreme Being, you are hard to meet with;至尊者,你難以相遇;
Like the king of brightness, you are free from all conceit.像光明之王一樣,你超越了一切驕慢。
“Sacred One, you are very powerful;「聖者,你擁有很大的力量;
Like Nārāyaṇa, you are hard to tame.如同那羅延天,你難以被馴服。
Protector of the World, your resolve is firm;世間保護者,你的決心堅定不移;
You will not move from the seat of awakening.您將不會離開菩提座。
“Like a lightning bolt released from the hand of Indra,「如同帝釋天手中釋放的閃電一樣,
Supreme Being, you cannot be turned back.至尊者,你不會被扭轉。
Supreme Being, you will attain your aim in full;至尊者,你必將完全成就你的目標;
Soon you will be endowed with the complete ten powers.”不久你將具足圓滿的十力。
Monks, in this way the goddesses in the Bodhi tree glorified the Bodhisattva evoking the sixteen types of magnificence.
比丘們,諸天女在菩提樹中這樣讚頌菩薩,呈現了十六種殊勝莊嚴。
21.184Monks, at that moment the gods of the pure realms tried to discourage Māra in sixteen different ways. What were these sixteen? They were: [333]

“Evil one, you are lost;「惡者啊,你已經失敗了;
You are brooding like an old crane.你像一隻老鶴一樣在沉悶地思考。

Like an old elephant sinking in a swamp.像一隻老象陷入沼澤中。
“Evil one, you are on your own,「惡者啊,你孤立無援,
Like a loser pretending to be a hero.像一個失敗者假裝是英雄。
Evil one, you have no one with you,邪惡者,你孤身一人,
Like someone suffering from a contagious disease, abandoned in a forest.如同患了傳染病的人,被遺棄在森林裡。
“Evil one, you are weak,「惡者啊,你很軟弱,
Like a young bull pained by a heavy load.如同一隻年幼的牛被沉重的負擔所苦。
Evil one, you are thrown on your back,惡者啊,你被擊倒在地,
Like a tree tossed about by the wind.如同被風吹動的樹木。
“Evil one, you are on the wrong path,「惡者啊,你走上了邪道,
Like a traveler who has lost his way.像一個迷失了方向的旅人。
Evil one, you are the lowest of the low,惡魔啊,你是最低賤的。
Like a poor man who gets envious.如同貧窮的人產生嫉妒。
“Evil one, you are garrulous,「惡者,你多言多語,
Like an impudent crow.像一隻放肆的烏鴉。
Evil one, you are overcome with pride,惡者,你被慢所壓倒,
Like an ungrateful ruffian.像個忘恩負義的無賴。
“Evil one, today you will flee,「惡者,你今日將逃竄,」
Like a jackal at the sound of a lion’s roar. [F.162.a]如同豺狼聽到獅子吼聲一樣。
Evil one, today you will be scattered about,邪惡者啊,今天你將四散逃竄,
Like a bird tossed around by the roaring wind.如同一隻鳥兒被獅子的咆哮聲吹動的狂風所拋散。
“Evil one, not knowing when the time is right,「惡魔啊,你不知道什麼時候是恰當的時機,
You are like a beggar whose merit has run out.你像一個福德已盡的乞丐。
Evil one, today you will be abandoned,惡者,今日你將被遺棄,
Like a broken pot full of dust.如同破裂的陶器裝滿了塵埃。
“Evil one, today you will be restrained by the Bodhisattva,「惡魔,今天你將被菩薩調伏,
Like a snake by a spell.如同被咒語所調伏的蛇。
Evil one, you are completely powerless,惡魔啊,你完全無能為力,
Like Uruṇḍa, who lost his arms and legs.”如同失去雙臂雙腿的烏倫陀一樣。
21.192Monks, in these sixteen ways the gods from the pure realms tried to discourage Māra. And, monks, the gods who attended upon the Bodhisattva now also tried to break Māra’s resolve in sixteen ways. What were these sixteen? They were:
21.192比丘們,以這十六種方式,來自淨土的天神試圖勸阻魔。比丘們,侍奉菩薩的天神們現在也試圖以十六種方式瓦解魔的決心。這十六種是什麼呢?它們是:
“Evil one, today you will be defeated by the Bodhisattva,「惡魔啊,今天你將被菩薩所打敗,」

Evil one, today you will be held down by the Bodhisattva,惡魔啊,今天你將被菩薩制伏,

“Evil one, today you will be outmatched by the Bodhisattva,「惡者,今天你將被菩薩所制伏,
Like a firefly by the sun.如同螢火蟲被太陽所照散。
Evil one, today you will be scattered by the Bodhisattva,惡魔,今日你將被菩薩驅散,
Like a handful of chaff by a strong wind.如同強風吹散一把糠秕。
“Evil one, today you will be terrified by the Bodhisattva,"惡者啊,今天你將被菩薩所懼怖,
Like a jackal by a lion.如獅子擊倒豺狼一般。
Evil one, today you will be felled by the Bodhisattva,邪惡者啊,今日你將被菩薩所摧伏,
Like a great sāl tree whose roots have been cut.如同根部被砍斷的娑羅樹一樣。
“Evil one, today you will be destroyed by the Bodhisattva,「惡魔,今天你將被菩薩摧毀,
Like a hostile city by a great king.如同一座敵對的城市被大王所攻克。
Evil one, today you will be dried up by the Bodhisattva,邪魔,今日你將被菩薩乾涸,
Like the water-filled footprint of a cow.如同牛蹄留下的積水一樣。
“Evil one, today you will flee from the Bodhisattva,「惡魔啊,今天你將從菩薩面前逃離,
Like a criminal escaping execution.像一個逃脫刑罰的罪犯。
Evil one, today you will be sent swirling by the Bodhisattva,惡魔啊,今天你將被菩薩打得旋轉飛舞,
Like a swarm of bees by the heat of fire.像一群蜜蜂被火的熱力驅散。
“Evil one, today you will be hurt by the Bodhisattva,邪惡者,今日你將被菩薩所傷害,
Like a lawful king who has lost his kingdom.如同失去王國的合法國王。
Evil one, today you will brood because of the Bodhisattva,惡魔,今天你將因為菩薩而憂苦。
Like an old crane with clipped wings. [F.162.b] [335]就像一隻被剪去翅膀的老鶴。
“Evil one, today you will be deprived of livelihood by the Bodhisattva,「惡者,今日你將被菩薩奪去生計,
Like a weary traveler without provisions in a wilderness.像一個疲憊的旅人在荒野中沒有給養。
Evil one, today you will be weeping because of the Bodhisattva,惡魔啊,今天你將因菩薩而哭泣,

Like grass and trees by the fire at the end of an eon.如同劫末火焰中的草木。
Evil one, today you will be crushed by the Bodhisattva,邪惡者啊,今天你將被菩薩摧毀。
Like a mountaintop by a mighty thunderbolt.”如同高山被強大的雷電所摧毀。
Monks, although the gods who attended upon the Bodhisattva tried to discourage Māra, the evil one, in these sixteen ways, Māra would not be deterred.
比丘們,雖然侍奉菩薩的天神以這十六種方式試圖勸阻魔王,但魔王仍然不肯退縮。
21.201On this topic, it is said:
Although hosts of deities ask him to turn back, Antaka does not pay heed;雖然眾多天神要求他轉身離去,但無常鬼不願理睬;
Instead he says, “Tear him up! Beat him! Destroy him! Don’t let him escape alive!他反而說:「撕裂他!毆打他!摧毀他!不要讓他活著逃脫!」
If he is liberated, he will liberate my realm and other realms as well;如果他獲得解脫,他將會解脫我的國度和其他國度。
But the only liberation in store for this mendicant is to get up and flee.”但是這位乞士唯一的解脫,就是要起身逃離。
21.202The Bodhisattva said:
“The king of mountains, Mount Meru, may move and all beings may cease to be;「須彌山王可能會移動,一切眾生可能會消滅;
All the stars, the planets, and the moon may fall from the sky to the earth;所有的星辰、行星和月亮都可能從天空墜落到地面上;
It is possible that all beings may think and act in unison and the great oceans may dry out;一切眾生可能會一致思考和行動,偉大的海洋也可能乾涸;
But it is impossible that someone like me would ever move from the king of trees.”但是,像我這樣的人永遠不可能從樹王那裡移動。
21.203Māra replied: [336]
“I am lord of desires and master of the universe.「我是貪欲之主,是宇宙的主宰。
I rule over gods, demigods, humans, and animals;我統治天神、阿修羅、人類和畜生;
All of them fall under my control.他們都在我的掌控之下。
So get up! Since you are in my realm, follow my orders!”所以起來吧!既然你在我的領域裡,就要遵從我的命令!
21.204The Bodhisattva said:
“If you are master of sense pleasures, you are clearly not a master at all;「如果你是感官欲樂的主人,那你根本不是真正的主人;」
Look who I am in reality—I am master of the Dharma.你看我真實的身份──我是法的主人。
If you are the master of sense pleasures, you should not go to the lower realms;如果你是感官欲樂的主人,你就不應該墮入惡道。
While you watch powerlessly, I shall attain awakening.”當你無力旁觀時,我將證得覺悟。
“Monk, what are you doing here in the wilderness on your own?「比丘啊,你獨自一人在這荒野裡做什麼呢?
It is not an easy task to find that which you seek.你所尋求的東西並不容易找到。
Bhṛgu, Aṅgiras, and others who exerted themselves in austerities [F.163.a]婆利古、安吉羅斯等人曾經努力修行苦行
Did not attain that supreme state, so forget about you, an ordinary man.”菩薩說:「沒有達到那種至高無上的境界,更別說你這樣的凡人了。」
21.206The Bodhisattva said:
“With a mind possessed by anger and full of desire for the divine realms,「具有瞋心且充滿對天界的貪欲的心,
And a belief that the self is either permanent or impermanent,以及認為我是永恆不變或者無常變化的見解,
And the thought that liberation is a place you can go to,以及認為解脫是一個可以到達的地方,
With such mistaken preconceptions, past sages practiced austerities.懷著這樣的錯誤見解,過去的賢者們修行了苦行。
“Not knowing the truth, they preached the existence of a soul,「不知真諦,他們宣說有我的輪迴,」
Variously claiming that this soul is all-pervasive, confined to locations, eternal,各種聲稱這個靈魂是遍佈一切的、局限於某些地方的、永恆的,
With form, without form, with qualities, without qualities, [337]有色無色,有相無相,
An agent, and not an agent. This is what they claimed.一個行動者,又不是行動者。這就是他們所主張的。
“But today, sitting here on this seat, I will attain stainless awakening;「但今日坐在這個座位上,我將證得無垢的覺悟;
I will defeat you, Māra, and repel your army and soldiers.我將擊敗你,魔,並驅散你的軍隊和士兵。
I will explain to the world about the origin and arising of things,我將向世界解釋事物的起源和生起。
And also about nirvāṇa, the cool state where suffering is pacified.”也要為世界講說涅槃,那寂靜清涼的境界,其中苦被平息。
21.209Māra, upset, angry, and furious, shouted harsh words:
“Catch that Gautama, who sits alone in the wilderness, and bring him quickly to me!「趕快抓住獨自坐在荒野裡的喬答摩,把他迅速帶到我這裡來!」
Take him to my palace, shackle, fetter, and yoke him, and make him my gatekeeper!把他帶到我的宮殿,用鎖鏈束縛他,給他戴上枷鎖,用軛套住他,讓他做我的守門人!
I will watch him suffer and cry out uncontrollably in many different ways, a slave of the gods.”我會看著他以各種不同的方式遭受痛苦,無法控制地哭喊,成為天神的奴隸。
21.210The Bodhisattva replied:
“It is possible that someone can make drawings in the empty sky,「有人可能能夠在虛空中作畫,」
Or catch the blowing wind with a lasso,或者用繩套捕捉吹動的風,
Or make the bright sun and moon fall from the sky to the earth,或者讓光明的日月從天空墜落到大地,
Yet you, or countless beings like you, will never force me away from this tree.”但是你,或者無數像你這樣的眾生,永遠無法強迫我離開這棵樹。
The powerful army of demons came forth.強大的魔軍前來襲擊。
With wild cries, playing conches and various drums, they asked,他們發出狂野的呼喊聲,吹奏海螺和各種鼓樂,問道,
“When you see this terrifying army of Māra,「當你看到這支魔軍的可怕隊伍時,
Oh, our son, our dear child, are you not annihilated already?哦,我們的兒子,我們親愛的孩子,你難道還沒有被消滅嗎?
“You are as bright as gold from the Jambū River, or the pericarp of the campaka flower;「你如同贍部洲河的黃金般光亮,或如香花的花蕊一樣燦爛;」
You are youthful, praised and honored by gods and humans. [338]你年輕俊美,受到天神和人類的讚頌和尊敬。
But today you will meet your doom in this great battle;但是今天你會在這場大戰中遇到你的厄運;
You will come under the control of Māra, like the moon seized by the demigod.”你將像被阿修羅所奪的月亮一樣,落入魔的掌控之中。
With the voice of Brahmā and the call of the cuckoo bird, [F.163.b]以梵天的音聲和布穀鳥的啼鳴,
The Well-Gone One spoke to the hordes of yakṣas and rākṣasas:善逝對夜叉和羅剎的眾多部隊說道:
“He who hopes to remove someone like me from this perfect tree「想要把像我這樣的人從這棵完美的樹上趕走的人
Is a fool who tries to frighten space itself.這是個傻瓜,想要驚嚇虛空本身。
“No one can harm me here beneath this tree,「沒有人能在這棵樹下傷害我,」
Not even someone who can destroy the trichiliocosm and count its motes of dust,即便是能夠摧毀三千大千世界並數清其中微塵的人,
Not even someone who can draw all the water in the oceans through a single straw,即使有人能用一根吸管吸盡所有海洋的水,
Not even someone who can split the supreme diamond mountain in a single instant.”不是誰都能在一瞬間劈開至高無上的金剛山。
Māra, being thus restrained, became angry;魔被如此調伏,因而感到憤怒;
He held aloft his unsheathed, sharp sword.他高舉著未入鞘的鋒利寶劍。
“Monk, quick, get up and do as I tell you,「比丘,快起來,按照我的話去做,」
Or I will cut you right away like a bamboo twig or dūrvā grass.”魔被調伏後,心生憤怒,高舉著出鞘的利劍。他說:「比丘,快起來,照我的吩咐去做,否則我會立刻像砍竹枝或茅香草一樣把你砍掉。」
21.216The Bodhisattva replied:
“Even if this trichiliocosm were filled with demons,「即使三千大千世界充滿了魔,
And each of them brandished a sword as large as Mount Meru,他們每個人都揮舞著一把像須彌山一樣巨大的劍,
They could not bend a hair on my body, let alone kill me.他們連我身上的一根毛髮都動搖不了,更何況殺害我。
Do not disbelieve me; I am reminding you of my firm resolve.” [339]不要懷疑我,我是在提醒你們我的堅定誓願。
With faces of camels, oxen, and elephants, and terrifying eyes,具有駱駝、牛、象的面孔,和令人恐懼的眼睛,
With venomous snakes for arms, with horrible poisonous eyes,以毒蛇作為手臂,以可怕的毒眼相對,
They hurled erupting volcanoes at him,他們向他拋擲噴發的火山,
As well as trees with their roots, and copper and iron.以及樹木連根帶起,還有銅和鐵。
They gathered like clouds from the four directions,他們從四面八方如雲般聚集而來,
Roaring and raining down bolts of lightning, iron balls,咆哮著降下閃電、鐵球,
Swords, spears, sharp axes, and poisoned arrows.劍、矛、鋒利的斧頭和毒箭。

Some transformed into garuḍas and pounced at snakes.有些變化成金翅鳥,撲向蛇類。
Infuriated, some hurled iron balls the size of Mount Meru,有些憤怒的眾生投擲出須彌山大小的鐵球,
As well as blazing mountain peaks.以及燃燒的山峰。
Hitting the ground, they made the earth quake打到地面,使得大地震動。
And stirred up the underground masses of water.並攪動了地下的水體。
Some jumped in front of him and some attacked him from behind;有些從前面跳出來攻擊他,有些從後面襲擊他;
Yelling out, “You child!” they attacked from the left and from the right.他們呼喊著「你這孩子!」從左右兩邊攻擊他。
Their hands and feet were turned the wrong way, and their heads were afire;他們的手和腳都扭轉了方向,他們的頭部燃燒著火焰;
Blazing lightning bolts sprang forth from their eyes.他們的眼睛裡迸射出熊熊燃燒的閃電。
As he witnessed this army of demons, ugly with unnatural forms,當他目睹這支醜陋、具有不自然色相的魔軍時,
This pure being understood that they were like an illusion. [F.164.a]這位清淨者明白他們如同幻象一般。
“There is no Māra here, no army, no being, and also no self;「這裡沒有魔,沒有軍隊,沒有眾生,也沒有我;
Like the moon reflected in a pond, so does this threefold universe revolve. [340]如同月亮映現在池塘裡,三界就這樣旋轉迴圈。
“There is no eye, no man, no woman, and no self;「沒有眼睛,沒有男人,沒有女人,也沒有我;
There is no ear, no nose, no tongue, and no body.沒有耳朵,沒有鼻子,沒有舌頭,也沒有身體。
No one created these phenomena and no one experiences them;沒有人創造這些法,也沒有人體驗這些法;
They arise in dependency and are empty both from within and without.”它們因緣而生,內外俱空。
As he proclaimed the truth that phenomena are empty,當他宣說法無自性的真諦時,
The yakṣas who are agreeable to discipline願意接受戒律的夜叉
Perceived the weapons in their hands to be flower garlands.他們感受到自己手中的武器變成了花環。
Such was the result of the words spoken by the One Who Always Speaks the Truth.這是常說真實語者所說的言語所帶來的結果。
He gracefully ran his right hand over his body from head to toe—他優雅地用右手從頭到腳輕輕撫過自己的身體——
The hand, which was adorned with a fine web,那隻裝飾著細緻網紋的手,
Which had beautiful copper-colored nails, sparkling like gold from the Jambū River,具有美麗的銅色指甲,閃爍著如同贍部洲河金子般的光芒。
And was marked with a thousand-spoked wheel, and was auspicious with the merit of virtue.並且上面標記著千輻輪,以及具足美德的福德而顯得吉祥。
He stretched out his hand, like a lightning bolt striking from the sky,他伸出手,如同閃電從空中劈下。
And said, “This earth is my witness.並說:「大地是我的證人。
In the past I have made millions of elaborate sacrifices我在過去曾經舉辦了數百萬場隆重的祭祀。
And never denied those who petitioned me.從來沒有拒絕過向我請求的人。
“Water and fire and wind are my witnesses,「水、火、風是我的見證人,
And so are Brahmā, the lord of beings, the moon, the sun, and the stars.梵天、眾生之主、月亮、太陽和星辰也是我的見證人。
The buddhas in the ten directions are my witnesses;十方的諸佛是我的見證人;
My discipline, practice, and the superior branches of awakening are all my witnesses.我的戒律、修行和殊勝的覺支都是我的見證。
“Generosity, discipline, and patience are my witnesses;「布施、戒律、忍辱是我的見證;
Diligence, concentration, and knowledge, [341]精進、定、智慧,
The four limitless contemplations, and the five higher knowledges are my witnesses.四無量觀和五宿命智是我的見證。
In fact all the gradual practices of awakening are my witnesses.實際上,所有漸進的覺悟修行都是我的證人。
“However many beings there are in the ten directions,無論十方有多少眾生,
With all their strength of merit, discipline, and wisdom,以他們所有的福德、戒律和智慧的力量,
And all their many unrestricted sacrifices,以及他們眾多無限制的供養,
They do not equal even a hundredth of the qualities in a single hair of mine.”他們連我一根毛髮的功德的百分之一都比不上。
He gracefully touched his hand to the earth他優雅地將手觸碰大地
So that the earth resounded like a copper vase.大地發出銅鼓般的聲響。
As Māra heard this, he fell to the ground,當魔聽到這些話時,他跌倒在地上,
And then heard the words, “Strike! Catch this friend of darkness.”然後聽到這樣的聲音:「打擊!抓住這個黑暗的朋友。」
As Māra’s body started to sweat, his splendor disappeared and his face grew pale;魔的身體開始出汗,他的光輝消失了,臉色變得蒼白。
Māra now saw himself overcome by old age.魔現在看到自己被老所克服。
He beat his chest and cried out in fear, with no protector in sight;他捶胸頓足,驚恐地大聲哭喊,四周沒有任何保護者。
Māra’s mind was confused and his thoughts befuddled.魔的心意混亂,思緒昏亂。
His elephants, horses, conveyances, and chariots all fell to the ground;他的象、馬、車輛和戰車都紛紛落地。
The yakṣas, kumbhāṇḍas, and flesh eaters were terrified and ran.夜叉、甕形鬼和食肉者都感到恐懼,紛紛逃竄。
Disoriented, they could not find their way, and without resting place or protection, [F.164.b]他們迷失了方向,找不到去路,沒有休息之處,也無人庇護。
They fled like birds seeing a forest fire.他們像鳥兒看到林火一樣逃竄。
Parents, children, sisters, and brothers asked about them:父母、子女、姐妹和兄弟都在打聽他們:
“Where were they seen? Where have they gone?”「他們在哪裡被看見?他們去了哪裡?」
And in this way they started to argue and fight with each other:就這樣他們開始互相爭執和打鬥:
“Such suffering has befallen us, and there are no prospects for living.” [342]「我們遭遇了如此的苦,而且沒有活下去的希望。」
The great army of demons, so utterly unshakable,那支龐大的魔軍,原本堅不可摧,
Was now all gone, dispersed, and no more together.現在已經完全消散了,不再聚集在一起。
For seven days they did not see each other,七天之中,他們互相看不到。
And when they finally did see their phantasmal forms, they said, “Great to see you alive.”當他們最後終於看到彼此幻影般的色身時,他們說:「很高興看到你們活著。」
The goddess in the tree felt compassion;樹上的天女產生了慈悲心;
She took her vase with water and sprinkled the friend of darkness.她拿起她的水瓶,灑水在黑暗的朋友身上。
“Quick, get up! You must depart without delay!「快點,起來!你必須立刻離開!
For this is what happens to those who pay no heed to the words of the Master.”因為這就是那些不聽聞大師教言的人所遭遇的結果。
“I did not listen to the kind and helpful advice of my sons,「我沒有聽從我的兒子們的友善和有益的勸告,」
And offended against a perfectly pure being.並且冒犯了一位完全清淨的人。
Therefore I now reap suffering, fear, misfortune, grief, ruin,因此,我現在要承受苦、恐懼、不幸、憂、毀滅、
Lamentation, loss of honor, and this miserable state.”憂愁、喪失榮譽,以及這種悲慘的境地。
21.237The goddess replied:
“A fool who offends against those who are faultless「一個愚癡的人如果觸犯那些無過失的人
Shall himself meet with many troubles—自己也將遭遇許多苦難——
Fear, suffering, calamities, misery,恐懼、苦、災難、悲慘,
Lamentation, murder, and bondage.”憂、殺害和束縛。」
The leaders of gods, demigods, garuḍas, kinnaras, and rākṣasas,天神、阿修羅、金翅鳥、緊那羅和羅剎的領導者們,
Brahmā, Indra, and the gods in the Heaven of Making Use of Others’ Emanations梵天、帝釋天,以及在他化自在天的天神
And the Heaven of Joy all proclaimed his victory and called out,喜樂天的所有天神都宣揚他的勝利,並且歡呼雀躍。
“You have conquered Māra’s army! Hero of the World, be victorious!”「你已經戰勝了魔的軍隊!世界的英雄,祝你勝利!」
They offered garlands of pearls, crescent moons, parasols, flags, and banners,他們獻上珍珠花環、新月、傘蓋、旗幟和橫幅,
And showered him with flowers and powders of aloe, tagara, and sandalwood. [343]並灑下花朵和沉香、多伽羅香、檀香的粉末。

Hero, today you shall attain awakening!英雄啊,今天你將證悟覺悟!
The ten powers, the unique qualities, the distinct realizations,十力、獨特的特質、不同的證悟,
And the experiences of a buddha you shall attain today.並且你將在今天證悟成佛的境界。
“In order to tame Māra, you entered this battle.「為了調伏魔,你進入了這場戰鬥。
There were 360 million beings who witnessed有三億六千萬個眾生見證了這一切
The power and might of a perfect bodhisattva,完美菩薩的力量與威能,
And 240 million who formed the wish for the perfect awakening of a buddha!”有二億四千萬眾生發願證得佛的無上正等正覺!
21.242This concludes the twenty-first chapter, on conquering Māra. [F.165.a]
