Cultivating the Samādhi
修習三摩地
6.1The Bhagavān now said to the youth Candraprabha, “Therefore, young man, bodhisattva mahāsattvas who wish for this samādhi, and wish to attain quickly the highest, complete enlightenment of perfect buddhahood, should cultivate this samādhi.
6.1薄伽梵現在對月光青年說:"因此,青年,想要獲得這個三摩地、想要迅速證得無上正等正覺佛果的菩薩摩訶薩,應當修習這個三摩地。
6.2“Young man, what is the cultivation of this samādhi? [F.18.b] Young man, bodhisattva mahāsattvas with a compassionate mind are dedicated to making offerings to the tathāgatas, whether living or passed into nirvāṇa, of Dharma robes, alms, seat and bedding, medicines for when ill, and of monastic utensils, and of flowers, incense, perfume, garlands, ointments, aromatic powders, clothing, parasols, banners, and flags, and of music and musical instruments. They dedicate that root of merit to the attainment of samādhi. They do not make offerings to a tathāgata with the hope for anything at all—not with the hope for anything they desire, nor with the hope for any enjoyment, nor with the hope for a higher existence, nor with the hope for followers—but do so with the Dharma in mind. They do not even, with that wish, perceive the Tathāgata as the dharmakāya, let alone perceiving him as the rūpakāya.
6.2「年輕人,如何修習這個三摩地呢?菩薩摩訶薩具有慈悲的心,致力於向如來(無論是仍住世的或已入涅槃的)作供養,供養法衣、飲食、座位和臥具、治病的藥物、僧侶的用具,以及花、香、香水、花鬘、香油、香粉、衣服、傘蓋、幢旗和旗幡,以及樂和樂器。他們把這個福德之根迴向到三摩地的證得。他們不以任何希求之心向如來作供養——不希求他們所渴望的任何事物,也不希求任何享樂,也不希求更高的存在,也不希求追隨者——而是以法為念而作供養。他們甚至不會帶著這樣的願望而認知如來是法身,更不用說認知他為色身了。」
6.3“Young man, it is in that way that an offering is made to the tathāgatas. It is done without seeing the tathāgatas, without focusing on the self, and without any desire for the ripening of karma. Young man, if an offering made to a tathāgata is purified of those three aspects of the action, this samādhi will be attained and the highest, complete enlightenment of perfect buddhahood will be quickly reached.”
6.3「年輕人啊,供養如來就是這樣做的。它是在沒有看見如來、沒有執著於自我,以及沒有對業熟的渴望的情況下進行的。年輕人啊,如果對如來的供養淨化了這三個行為的方面,這個三摩地就會被證得,無上正等正覺的完美佛果就會迅速被達成。」
6.4At this point the Bhagavān gave a detailed teaching on the cultivation of the samādhi by chanting the following extensive verses to the youth Candraprabha.
6.4薄伽梵在此向月光少年詳細宣說了通過誦唱以下廣泛的偈頌來培養三摩地的方法。
“Through offering incense to infinite wisdom「透過向無量的慧供養香
Beings will have an infinite aroma.生命將具有無量的香氣。
In ten million eons they will not go to the lower realms,在千萬劫裡,他們不會墮入惡趣,
And no bad smells will come from them. {1}而且不會從他們身上散發出任何惡臭。
“For ten million eons they will practice bodhisattva conduct「十百萬劫中,他們將實踐菩薩行
And make offerings to ten thousand million buddhas.並且供養一千萬尊佛陀。
The aroma of wisdom will arise so that they智慧的香氣將會生起,使得他們
Will become buddhas with the aroma of supreme conduct. {2}將成為具有最勝行香氣的佛陀。
“If any beings know that the incense they offer,「如果任何生命知道他們供養的香,
Those to whom they offer it,那些他們供養的對象,
And the minds that offer incense [F.19.a] do not exist,而供香的心也不存在,
The ‘concordant patience’ they have is of lesser kind. {3}他們所擁有的「相應忍」是較低級的。
“But if a person maintains a patience that is great,但是,如果一個人保持著偉大的忍,
Even were they cut up, for ten million eons,即使被切割成碎片,經過一千萬劫,
Into tiny pieces as numerous as the Ganges sands,化作恆河沙數般細小的微塵,
Their mind will never regress. {4}他們的心永遠不會退失。{4}
“Why is this termed ‘patience’?「為什麼稱為『忍』呢?
And why is it called ‘concordant’?為什麼稱為「相應」?
For what reason is it said to be ‘nonregressive’?為什麼說這是「不退轉」的呢?
And why are they called ‘bodhisattvas’? {5}那麼為什麼他們被稱為『菩薩』呢?
“Their patience being for the selfless nature of phenomena,他們的忍是針對現象的無我本質,
Those who perceive selflessness have no kleśas.那些認知無我的人沒有煩惱。
They know that all phenomena are like space.他們知道一切現象都如同虛空。
That, therefore, is what is termed ‘patience.’ {6}因此,這就是所謂的「忍」。{6}
“They train in accord with all the jinas.他們依照所有勝者的教法而修學。
Those wise ones do not practice non-Dharma.那些智慧者不實踐非法的事物。
They do not doubt the Buddha’s Dharma.他們不懷疑佛陀的法。
That is the patience that is ‘concordant.’ {7}這就是「相應」的忍。{7}
“Even if all the māras in the world transformed「即使世界中所有的魔都變化
Into buddhas and said to such practitioners,化作佛陀並對這樣的修行者說話,
‘Enlightenment is too difficult! So become a śrāvaka!’「菩提太難了!你還是去做聲聞吧!」
They would not believe those words and would not regress. {8}他們不會相信那些言語,也不會退轉。{8}
“If they know of the incorrect view of beings「如果他們認識到生命的不正見
They say, ‘This is not the path to deathlessness!’他們說:「這不是通往不死的道路!」
So that they reject the wrong path and are brought to the true path.以此令他們捨離錯誤之道,而被引導至真實之道。
That is the reason why they are called bodhisattvas. {9}這就是他們被稱為菩薩的原因。{9}
“They remain upon the path of concordant patience他們安住於相應忍的道路上
And are awake through the knowledge of selflessness.並且通過無我的智慧而保持清醒。
Even in a dream they do not believe即使在夢中他們也不相信
In humans, persons, souls, or beings. {10}在人類、人物、靈魂或生命中。{10}
“Even if as many millions of māras as there are Ganges sands「即使有如恆河沙數那麼多的魔,」
Came before them in the forms of buddhas,以佛陀的身形出現在他們面前,
And said to them that there is a soul within the body,並且對他們說在身體裡面有一個靈魂。
They would reply that it was not so and say, ‘You are not buddhas.’ {11}他們會回答說並非如此,並說道:「你們不是佛陀。」{11}
“Through wisdom I know that the skandhas are empty.「我通過慧明白了各蘊是空的。
Because I know that, I am unaccompanied by kleśas.正因為我知道這一點,我不被煩惱所伴隨。
In my conduct I use mere words在我的行中,我僅用言語。
But within this world remain within nirvāṇa, {12}但在這個世界中,保持在涅槃中,
“Just as when a man has a son born to him就像一個人生了一個兒子一樣
And gives him a name, saying, ‘This is his name!’並給他取名說,「這是他的名字!」
But that name cannot be found anywhere.但那個名字卻無處可尋。
And that name did not come from anywhere. {13}而那個名字也並非來自任何地方。{13}
“In that way the name ‘bodhisattva’ is given, [F.19.b]「就這樣,『菩薩』這個名稱被給予了,
But if one seeks for this ‘bodhisattva’但是如果有人去尋求這個「菩薩」
That name will not be found anywhere.那個名字將無處可尋。
One who knows that is a bodhisattva. {14}明白這一點的人就是菩薩。{14}
“The bodhisattvas do not believe in the existence of a self菩薩不相信自我的存在
Any more than that a fire can burn in the middle of the ocean.就像火焰不能在海洋中燃燒一樣。
Since they have developed the aspiration for enlightenment既然他們已經生起了菩提心
They have not had the view that there is a soul within. {15}他們沒有持有內在有靈魂的觀點。
“There is no birth and there is no death「沒有生也沒有死
For beings, humans, the descendants of Manu.對於生命、人類、摩奴的後裔。
Phenomena have an empty nature, like illusions;現象具有空性的本質,如同幻相一般;
The tīrthikas are unable to know that. {16}外道無法認識這一點。{16}
“Also those who crave for food,「同樣地,那些貪求食物的人,」
Who desire and cling to alms bowls and robes,執著於缽盂和袈裟,渴望與執取的人,
Who are arrogant and are haughty,那些傲慢和自負的人,
They cannot understand the Buddha’s enlightenment. {17}他們無法理解佛陀的菩提。{17}
“The lazy who are overcome by sleepiness and dullness,「懶惰的人被昏沉和遲鈍所克服,
Who have stubborn minds, and are shameless,心智頑固、沒有慚愧的人,
Who have no faith in the Buddha,對佛陀沒有信心的人,
They are unable to understand sublime enlightenment. {18}他們無法理解崇高的菩提。{18}
“The ordinary beings with incorrect behavior,「具有不當行為的普通生命,
Those who do not have faith in the Dharma,那些對法缺乏信心的人,
Who have no respect toward celibates,對修行者缺乏恭敬的人,
They are unable to understand enlightenment. {19}他們無法了解菩提。{19}
“Those with correct behavior, who have modesty and self-respect,「具有正確行為、擁有謙遜和羞恥心的人們,
Who delight in the Dharma and the buddhas,喜樂於法和佛陀的人,
Who show great respect to the practitioners of celibacy,對梵行者表現出極大的恭敬者,
They will attain the supreme, highest enlightenment. {20}他們將證得至高無上的菩提。{20}
“Those whose conduct is performed with mindfulness,那些以念進行修行的人們,
Who sit upon their cushion with joy and delight,他們歡喜地坐在禪墊上,
With dhyāna as food and samādhi for drink,以禪定為食,以三摩地為飲。
They will attain the supreme, highest enlightenment. {21}他們將證得至高無上的菩提。{21}
“Those who understand selflessness all day long,「那些整日領悟無我的人,
Who are mindful of emptiness as they walk,在行走時觀照空性的人,
Who bear the beautiful aromatic flowers of the aspects of enlightenment,承載著覺支美麗芬芳的花朵,
Those dedicated ones will attain supreme enlightenment. {22}這些精進的人將會證得無上菩提。{22}
“They who are skilled in bodhisattva conduct他們精通菩薩行
Are not on the level of other beings,不同於其他生命的境界,
Of śrāvakas, or of pratyekabuddhas.聲聞或辟支佛的境界。
Who would not aspire to that realization? {23}誰會不渴望那樣的現證呢?
“If I were to have a lifespan that continued「如果我的壽命能夠延續
For as many millions of eons as there are sands in the Ganges,我如果擁有像恆河沙粒那麼多劫的壽命,
I would not even be able to finish reciting the praises我甚至無法念完對佛陀的讚歎
Of as little of the Buddha’s wisdom as a tiny pore. {24}佛陀的慧當中,如同毛孔那樣微小的一點點。{24}
“Therefore, having heard the benefits [F.20.a]「因此,聽聞到利益
That have been taught by the unsurpassable Jina,由無上勝者所教導的。
You should quickly become instructed in this samādhi.你應該迅速獲得這種三摩地的教導。
And then the attainment of supreme enlightenment will not be difficult.” {25}那麼證得無上菩提就不會困難了。
