Praise of the Buddha’s Qualities
對佛陀功德的讚歎
3.1Then the Bhagavān said to the youth Candraprabha, “Young man, therefore, if bodhisattva mahāsattvas wish to teach the buddha qualities as described by the Tathāgata, the arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, without any loss of meaning or words, and for all their words to come forth as those of the Buddha, then those bodhisattva mahāsattvas, young man, [F.10.a] should, for the sake of all beings, obtain this samādhi, understand it, preserve it, recite it to others, promote it, proclaim it, chant it, meditate on it with unadulterated meditation, promulgate it, and make it widely known to others.
3.1薄伽梵對年輕人月光說:"年輕人,因此,如果菩薩摩訶薩希望按照如來、阿羅漢、圓滿證悟的佛陀所描述的那樣來教導佛陀的品質,而不失去任何意義或文字,並使他們所有的言語都成為佛陀的言語,那麼這些菩薩摩訶薩,年輕人,應當為了一切生命的緣故,獲得這個三摩地,理解它,保持它,向他人背誦它,推進它,宣揚它,吟誦它,用純淨的禪修來冥想它,傳播它,並使它廣為人知。"
3.2“Young man, what are the buddha qualities of a tathāgata?
“Young man, bodhisattva mahāsattvas, whether in solitude, at the foot of a tree, in the open air, or in an empty building, should learn well the following.
「年輕人,菩薩摩訶薩無論是在獨處、樹下、空曠處或空房子裡,都應該好好學習以下的內容。」
3.3“The Bhagavān is thus: a tathāgata, an arhat, a fully enlightened buddha, one with perfect wisdom and conduct, a sugata, one who knows the world’s beings, an unsurpassable guide who tames beings, a teacher of devas and humans, a buddha, a bhagavān.
3.3「薄伽梵是這樣的:如來、阿羅漢、正等覺、具足智慧和行為的聖者、善逝、了知世間眾生者、無上導師調御眾生、天人師、佛陀、薄伽梵。
3.4“The Tathāgata is the natural result of merit. He is the inevitable result of roots of merit. He is adorned by patience. He is the manifestation of a treasure of merit. He is beautified by the excellent primary signs of a great being. He has the blossomed flowers of the secondary signs of a great being. He is exemplary in his conduct. His appearance is never disagreeable. He brings joy to those motivated by faith. He is invincible in his wisdom. He has the invulnerability of the strengths. He is the teacher of all beings. He is the father of all bodhisattvas. He is the king of all noble individuals. He is the caravan leader for those beginning on their journey. He is immeasurable in his wisdom. He is inconceivable in his eloquence. He is pure in his voice. He is delightful in his speech. He is lovely in his physical form. He is unequaled in body. He is unstained by the desire realm. He is unsullied by the form realm. He is unadulterated by the formless realm. He is free from suffering. He is liberated from the skandhas. He is separated from the dhātus. He has restrained the āyatanas. He has cut through the knots. He is free from torment. [F.10.b] He is released from craving. He has crossed over the great river. He is complete in his wisdom. He is established in the wisdom of the buddha bhagavāns of the past, future, and present. He does not remain in nirvāṇa. He resides at the summit of existence. He is on the level of seeing all beings. Young man, those are the buddha qualities of a tathāgata.
3.4"如來是福德的自然結果。他是福德根的必然果實。他由忍所莊嚴。他是福德寶藏的示現。他由摩訶薩的殊勝相好所美化。他具有摩訶薩的圓滿次等標誌的花朵。他的行為是可效法的。他的外貌從不令人厭惡。他給具有信心動機的人帶來喜悅。他在慧中是無敵的。他具有力的無敵性。他是一切眾生的師。他是一切菩薩的父親。他是一切聖賢的王。他是開始旅程者的商隊領袖。他的慧是無量的。他的辯才是不可思議的。他的聲音是清淨的。他的言語是令人歡喜的。他的身相是可愛的。他的身體是無等的。他不為欲界所染汙。他不為色界所污穢。他不為無色界所摻雜。他免於苦。他從蘊中解脫。他與界相分離。他制約了處。他截斷了結。他免於折磨。他從貪欲中解脫。他渡過了大河。他在慧中是圓滿的。他確立於過去、未來和現在的佛陀薄伽梵的慧中。他不住於涅槃。他居於有的頂峰。他在見一切眾生的層次上。年輕人,那些是如來的佛陀功德。"
3.5“If bodhisattva mahāsattvas who possess these buddha qualities and their praise, and who have continuous confidence of speech based upon this samādhi, teach correctly the buddha qualities and praises of the Tathāgata, the arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, there will be no loss of meaning or words and all their words will come forth as those of the Buddha.”
3.5「若菩薩摩訶薩具足這些佛陀的功德和讚歎,並且基於此三摩地而具有持續不斷的語言信心,正確地教導如來、阿羅漢、正等覺佛陀的佛陀功德和讚歎,就不會有意義或言辭的喪失,他們所有的言語都將呈現為佛陀的言語。」
3.6Then at that time the Bhagavān, in order to make the meaning clear, gave a detailed teaching by chanting the following extensive verses to the youth Candraprabha.
3.6那時,薄伽梵為了闡明其義,向月光青年詳細講述,並誦唱了以下廣大的偈頌。
“It would not be easy to recite all the praises of the jinas「即便講述許多千個劫的時間,
也不容易誦讀所有勝者的讚歎」
Even if one were to speak for many thousands of eons;即便有人說上許多千劫之久;
And the jinas attained their qualities諸勝者成就了他們的功德
Through seeking this supreme samādhi of peace. {1}通過尋求這個至高無上的寧靜三摩地。
“In the past, when I sought this supreme samādhi of peace「過去當我尋求這個至高的寂靜三摩地時
With a mind that was indefatigable,用堅不可摧的心,
I gave away a maiden adorned in jewelry,我施捨了一個戴著珠寶裝飾的少女,
Who was perfectly beautiful and desirable. {2}她完全美麗動人,令人渴慕。{2}
“In the past, when I sought this supreme samādhi of peace「過去我尋求這至高無上的寧靜三摩地時,
With a mind that was indefatigable,用不疲倦的心,
I gave away male and female servants, riches and grain,我佈施了男女僕人、財富和穀物,
And also jewels, pearls, gold, and silver. {3}還有寶石、珍珠、黃金和白銀。
“When I sought this supreme samādhi of peace「當我追求這個至高無上的寧靜三摩地時
In the past, I gave to the guides在過去,我曾向導師們布施
Various kinds of precious jewels, strings of pearls,各種各樣的寶,珍珠串,
Beautiful clothes, and necklaces of conch and gold. {4}美麗的衣服、以及海螺和黃金的項鍊。
“In countless, endless millions of eons在無數無邊的百萬劫中
I developed the highest supreme aspiration, [F.11.a]我培養了最高無上的願心,
And gave the best of perfumes and summer flowers並獻上最殊勝的香水和夏日的花
To the caityas of the jinas. {5}於勝者的塔。
“Through my giving the gift of the Dharma「通過我布施法的禮物
I developed a pleasing following;我培養了令人愉悅的追隨者。
But the thought did not arise in my mind但我的心中沒有生起這樣的念。
Of gaining renown through giving the gift of the Dharma. {6}透過傳授法的禮物而獲得名聲。
“I never felt any reluctance to give away「我從未對施捨感到任何遲疑
The loveliest things that gave me pleasure.那些最令我歡喜的美好之物。
I gave the gift of Dharma numerous times,我多次施予法的禮物,
And always my thoughts were of attaining buddha wisdom. {7}而我的念頭始終都是為了證得佛陀的慧。
“In the past, to attain the qualities of this training,「過去為了獲得此法訓練的功德,
I remained always in excellent, quiet forests.我始終安住在清淨寧靜的林中。
I had immense compassion throughout that time那時候,我有著深厚無量的慈悲心。
And always my thoughts were of attaining buddha wisdom. {8}我的念想始終都是為了證得佛陀慧。{8}
“I had a distinct conduct that was gentle and sweet,我有一種獨特的行,溫和而甘美,
A smiling face, the memory of what I had heard, and affectionate speech.微笑的臉龐、對所聞法義的憶念,以及親切溫暖的言語。
My very sweet words were beloved by many我非常甜蜜的言語為許多生命所愛戴。
And all beings never had enough of looking at me. {9}而且一切生命永遠看不夠我。{9}
“I did not have any stinginess for even a moment.「我連一刻都沒有過吝嗇。
Throughout myriad existences I had no envy.在無數生命中,我始終沒有嫉妒。
I was always completely satisfied by alms.我總是對布施感到完全滿足。
I offered everything and left no remainder. {10}我奉獻一切,沒有留下任何殘餘。{10}
“Those who remember just one four-line verse from this「那些只是記住這部經中一個四句偈頌的人,
Become very learned and remember all they have heard.變得非常博學,並記住他們所聽到的一切。
Through it the highest, perfect faith arose in me通過它,我內心生起了最高、完滿的信心
And I always honored it. {11}我始終敬重它。{11}
“I longed for the supreme peace of this samādhi「我渴望此三摩地的最高寂靜」
And made many offerings to the guides.並向導師進行了許多供養。
I gave to them an endless variety of gifts我給予他們無盡種類的禮物
And this maintained my correct conduct for a long time. {12}這樣維持了我很長時間的正行。{12}
“From remembering one verse from this samādhi「從憶念這個三摩地的一個偈頌開始
The merit will be vastly greater福德將會大得無比
Than from endlessly offering numerous, various worlds勝過無盡地供養眾多各種世界
That are all filled with precious jewels. {13}全部充滿七寶的世界。{13}
“If those wishing for merit如果那些希望獲得福德的人
Were to offer to the jinas向勝者供養
Whatever flowers and incense exist無論存在什麼樣的花和香
For numerous, countless, endless eons, {14}在無數、不可計數、無邊的劫中,{14}
“And if those wishing for merit「如果那些希求福德的人
Were to offer to the jinas向勝者供養
Every kind of music, light, food, and clothing各式各樣的樂、光、食物和衣服
For numerous, countless, endless eons, {15}在無數、無量、無邊的劫中,{15}
“A person who develops the aspiration to enlightenment, [F.11.b]「一個人如果生起了菩提的願心,
Wishing to become a self-arisen jina, a lord of Dharma,願心成為自然而起的勝者,法王,
Will have merit that will be vastly greater將會獲得遠為殊勝的福德
Through remembering one verse of this meditation. {16}通過憶念這一偈頌的禪修。{16}
“The merit from possessing this samādhi is most vast.「具足這個三摩地所得的福德是最廣大的。
One would not be able to conclude reciting即使經過無數劫,也無法完全述說
The description of its benefits even in as many eons即使經歷多劫時間,也無法描述其利益之廣大
As there are grains of sand in the Ganges. {17}如恆河中的沙粒那樣多的劫。{17}
“Therefore, having listened to「因此,已經聽聞
The excellent benefits of the buddhas,佛陀們的殊勝利益,
You should quickly be one who has the transmission你應當迅速成為這個傳承的持有者。
Of this samādhi praised by the Buddha. {18}這個被佛陀讚歎的三摩地。{18}
“In my past lives I have honored「在我的過去世中,我曾經恭敬供養
Seven hundred and thirty million buddhas.七億三千萬尊佛陀。
All of those buddhas所有那些佛陀
Promulgated this sūtra. {19}宣說了這部經。{19}
“The name of this sūtra「這部經的名稱
Is Entering Great Compassion.是進入大悲。
Buddha qualities will not be hard to attain佛陀的品質將不難獲得
For the learned one who trains in it. {20}對於學習它的聰慧者來說。{20}
“When the World’s Guide is in nirvāṇa,「當世界的導師進入涅槃時,
In that future time there will be在那個未來的時代將會出現
Many undisciplined bhikṣus許多不持戒律的比丘
Who have no interest in becoming learned. {21}那些沒有興趣成為有學問者的人。
“They will utter praises of correct conduct「他們將讚歎正行
But will have no interest in correct conduct.但是對於正行卻沒有興趣。
They will utter praises of samādhi他們將讚歎三摩地
But will have no interest in samādhi. {22}但對三摩地毫無興趣。{22}
“They will utter praises of wisdom「他們會讚歎慧
But will have no interest in wisdom.但對慧卻沒有興趣。
They will utter praises of liberation他們將讚歎解脫
But will have no interest in liberation. {23}但卻對解脫沒有興趣。{23}
“It is like when someone就像某人一樣
Speaks of the qualities of sandalwood,談論檀香的特質,
Saying, ‘Sandalwood is like this,說「檀香是這樣的,
It makes a pleasing incense.’ {24}它會產生令人愉悅的香。
“Then another person asks"那時另有一個人提出問題"
That man this question:那個人這樣問他:
‘Do you have some of the sandalwood「你有一些檀香嗎?」
That you have been praising?’ {25}你一直在稱讚的那檀香嗎?」{25}
“The man answers him,那個人回答他說,
‘I speak the praises of that incense「我述說那香的讚歎
And in that way make my living,我就是這樣謀生的。
But I have never seen that incense.’ {26}但我從未見過那香。{26}
“In such a way, in future times「像這樣,在未來的時代」
There will be those who have no correct conduct,將會有那些沒有正行的人,
Yet they who do not engage in it然而那些不修習它的人
Will make their living by praising it. {27}將會以讚頌它來謀生。{27}
“In that way, in future times「像這樣,在未來的時代
There will be those who have no samādhi,將來會有那些沒有三摩地的人,
Yet they who do not engage in it然而那些不修習它的人
Will make their living by praising it. {28}將會以讚美它來謀生。{28}
“In that way, in future times"就這樣,在未來的時代
There will be those who have no wisdom,將會有那些缺乏慧的人,
Yet they who do not engage in it然而那些不修行它的人
Will make their living by praising it. {29} [F.12.a]將藉由讚頌它來謀生。{29} [F.12.a]
“In that way, in future times「這樣的話,在未來的時代
There will be those who have no liberation,將會有些人無法獲得解脫,
Yet they who do not engage in it然而那些不修習它的人
Will make their living by praising it. {30}將會以讚頌它來維持生計。{30}
“When a certain poor person,「當某個貧窮的人,
Despised by the populace,被大眾所輕視,
Later finds a treasure後來找到了寶藏
And becomes rich, he is respected by the people. {31}就能變得富有,他就會得到人民的恭敬。{31}
“In that same way, not having attained the samādhi,「同樣地,沒有證得三摩地,
A bodhisattva is not esteemed菩薩不被尊敬
By gods or humans, kumbhāṇḍas or rākṣasas,天神、人類、瓶神或羅剎都不會恭敬他。
Just like the poor person who has no wealth. {32}就如同貧窮的人沒有財富一樣。
“Yet when the wise one attains the level然而,當智者達到此境界時
Of the unfathomable Dharma treasure,無法測度的法寶
Gods and humans will be attracted to him,諸天與人類都會被他所吸引,
And he will give those beings the supreme wealth. {33}他將給予那些生命最高的財富。{33}
“Therefore, having heard the Jina’s description"因此,聽聞勝者的描述"
Of the perfect attainment of those benefits,那些完美成就的利益的圓滿獲得,
Forsake all happiness gained through reputation捨棄所有透過名聲獲得的快樂
And hold the transmission of this supreme peace of samādhi. {34}並持守這個三摩地至上寧靜的傳承。{34}
“The buddhas in all directions who have passed away,「已經滅度的十方佛陀,」
And those of the future, and those who are present,和未來的,以及現在的,
All attain unequaled, inconceivable enlightenment都成就無等、不可思議的菩提
Through having trained in this samādhi.” {35}通過修習這個三摩地而成就的。{35}
The youth Candraprabha was overjoyed,少年月光歡喜踴躍,
And in the presence of the Buddha he said these words:他在佛陀面前說出了這些話語:
“When the best of beings has passed into nirvāṇa,「當最殊勝的生命進入涅槃之後,
I will uphold this sūtra in that very difficult time. {36}我將在那個極為困難的時代堅守這部經。{36}
“I will give up my body and my life「我將捨棄我的身體和生命」
And whatever happiness there is in the world;以及世界中所有的幸福;
In that time of great terrors在那個充滿巨大恐怖的時代
I will hold this samādhi of supreme peace. {37}我將持守這個最高寧靜的三摩地。{37}
“I will have compassion for many beings.我將對許多生命懷有慈悲。
I will see beings suffering without a protector.我將看到那些沒有保護者的生命在苦難中。
I will be endowed with love for them我將對他們充滿愛。
And will uphold this supreme peace, this samādhi.” {38}並將護持這至上的寂靜,這個三摩地。
At that time, no less than five hundred people那時,不少於五百人
Became holders of the samādhi.成為了三摩地的持有者。
The youth was their leader這位年輕人是他們的領導者
In this vast holding of the supreme sūtra. {39}在這廣大的最高經的領受中。{39}
