Becoming a Keeper of the Sūtra
成為經典的護持者
11.1The Bhagavān came to the street on which was the home of the youth Candraprabha, and soon arrived at the home of the youth Candraprabha. Once he had arrived, he sat on the seat prepared for him. The saṅgha of bodhisattvas and the saṅgha of bhikṣus also sat on the appropriate seats that had been arranged for each of them.
11.1薄伽梵來到月光青年住家所在的街道,很快就抵達了月光青年的家。到達之後,他坐在為他準備的座位上。菩薩僧伽和比丘僧伽也都坐在為各自安排的適當座位上。
11.2Then the youth Candraprabha, knowing that the Bhagavān, the saṅgha of bodhisattvas, and the saṅgha of bhikṣus were seated, [F.39.b] himself presented and served a series of great offerings: numerous excellent foods, with hundreds of flavors to savor as they chewed, licked, sucked, and drank.
11.2那時青年月光見到薄伽梵、菩薩僧伽和比丘僧伽都已就坐,自己親自獻上和供奉一系列殊勝的大供養:眾多美妙的食物,有著數百種美味,讓人們咀嚼、舔舐、吸吮和飲用時都能品嚐到。
11.3When he saw that the Bhagavān had concluded his meal, which was signaled by his setting down his alms bowl, he offered for the Bhagavān’s body two lengths of cloth of the value of a trillion silver coins, and also to each of the bodhisattvas, and he offered three dharma robes to each one in the saṅgha of bhikṣus.
11.3當月光童子看到薄伽梵放下缽,表示用餐已完畢時,他為薄伽梵的身體供養了價值一兆枚銀幣的兩匹布料,並為每位菩薩各供養,還為僧伽中的每位比丘各供養了三件法衣。
11.4Then the youth Candraprabha rose from his seat, removed his robe from one shoulder and, casting toward the Bhagavān a divine coral tree flower, he made offerings and uttered praises. Then, his palms placed together, he bowed toward the Bhagavān and praised him with these appropriate verses:
11.4於是月光青年從座位上起身,將一肩的衣服脫下,向薄伽梵拋灑神珊瑚樹的花朵,進行供養並發出讚歎。然後他合掌向薄伽梵禮拜,並用這些恰當的偈頌讚歎他:
“You are unborn and unceasing;「您無生無滅;
Without a body, inconceivable,無身體、不可思議,
You have the perfect body and primary signs.您具備了完美的身體和相好。
I pay homage to you who are an ocean of qualities. {i}我向具足無量功德的您致敬。
“You are a hero who has been born from wisdom.你是從慧生出的英雄。
You possess the power of methods and strengths.你具足了方便和力量的力量。
You are a buddha who is the same as space.你是與虛空相同的佛陀。
I pay homage to you who have perfected patience. {ii}我向已經圓滿忍的你頂禮。
“Your conduct is to remain in constant mindfulness.「你的行是安住於恆常的念。」
The Tathāgata’s bed is joy and happiness.如來的床是喜樂。
Your drink is samādhi and your food is supreme dhyāna.你的飲品是三摩地,你的食物是最高的禪定。
I pay homage to you who reside in the solitude of emptiness. {iii}我向居住在空性獨處中的您致敬。
“O Inconceivable Buddha,「啊,不可思議的佛陀,
The Guide for the whole world!整個世界的導師!
When the beings of this world make offerings to you當這個世界的生命向你供養
They advance toward supreme nirvāṇa.” {iv}他們邁向至高的涅槃。
11.9Thus did he praise the one unequaled Lord, and then the youth said, with a joyous mind, “Unequaled Buddha, who has an inconceivable body, you have consumed the meal. Through this may I also become a buddha like you, the god of gods!” [F.40.a]
11.9他就這樣讚歎這位無等的聖者,之後那位少年歡喜地說道:「無等的佛陀啊,您有著不可思議的身體,您已經享用了這頓飯食。願我也能藉由此功德,成為像您一樣的佛陀,成為眾神之神!」
11.10In that way, therefore, the youth Candraprabha provided divine food with a hundred flavors to the Bhagavān. He offered divine coral tree flowers to the Bhagavān, and praised him with appropriate verses.
11.10如此,月光青年就以百種風味的天食供養薄伽梵,並向薄伽梵供養天生珊瑚樹花,並以合適的偈頌讚歎了他。
11.11Now, placing his palms together in homage toward the Bhagavān, in his mind he addressed him with these verses:

“Whatever the wise bodhisattvas do,「智慧的菩薩們所做的一切,」
They always follow the nature of the Dharma.他們總是遵循法性而行。
I pray to the Guide to teach what actions are performed我向導師祈禱,請教導什麼是所應當進行的行為。
When those with wisdom engage in actions. {1}當具有慧的菩薩們進行行為時。
“In what way, Guide, are past lives remembered?「導師啊,應當如何才能憶念過去世?
In what way is rebirth in a womb avoided?怎樣才能避免投生到子宮裡呢?
In what way does the community not become divided?如何使僧團不會分裂?
In what way does one gain endless eloquence? {2}怎樣才能獲得無盡的辯才?
“You know the activities of all beings.「你知道一切生命的活動。
You have the knowledge of all phenomena.你具備一切現象的知識。
You are the invincible, supreme human.你是無敵的、至高無上的人。
I have asked my questions; give me your elucidation. {3}我已經提出了我的問題;請給我你的闡釋。
“You know that nonexistence is the nature of phenomena;「你知道無是法性;
You put into words that which cannot be described.你用言語表達了不可言說之物。
Just as a lion overpowers all jackals,正如獅子制伏了所有豺狼一樣,
That is how the Buddha overpowers the tīrthikas. {4}這就是佛陀制伏外道的方式。{4}
“You know the conduct of all beings.「你了知一切生命的行為。
You have the wisdom of all phenomena.你具有一切現象的慧。
You have wisdom without attachment, and activity that is pure.你具有沒有執著的慧,以及清淨的行為。
Lord of the Dharma, elucidate those for me. {5}法之主,請為我闡明這些。{5}
“You know the past and also the future.你知道過去,也知道未來。
You also know what is happening in the present.你也知道現在正在發生的事情。
You have unimpeded knowledge of the three times.你對三世具有無礙的智慧。
Therefore I have asked you my questions, lion of the Śākyas. {6}因此我向你提出了這些問題,釋迦族的獅子。{6}
“You, Dharma king, know the true nature你這位法王啊,知曉真性
That is the nature of the jinas of the three times.這是三世勝者的真性。
You are skilled in the nature of phenomena, self-arisen one.您善於瞭解法性,自然成就者。
Therefore, ocean of wisdom, I have asked you my questions. {7}因此,慧海,我才向你提出這些問題。{7}
“You do not have any quality of error.你沒有任何誤的性質。
Therefore you have a mind of complete elimination—因此你具有完全消除的心——
You have eliminated the fetters and the rigidity of ignorance.你已經消除了束縛和無明的僵化。
Lord of humans, teach me the conduct of a bodhisattva. {8}人中之主,請教導我菩薩的行。{8}
“You, Jina, know the characteristics of phenomena.「您是勝者,您知曉現象的特徵。
Teach me the characteristics of phenomena. [F.40.b]請為我講述現象的特徵。
When I have understood those characteristics of phenomena當我理解了那些現象的特徵時
I shall practice the conduct of enlightenment that has those characteristics. {9}我將修持具有那些特徵的菩提行。{9}
“The conduct of beings is infinitely different.「生命的行是無限多樣的。
How do they engage in practicing their conduct?他們如何從事修習他們的行?
Teach to me how conduct is engaged in請為我開示如何從事行的修習
So that from your words, I may know the conduct of beings. {10}所以從你的話語中,我能夠瞭解生命的行。{10}
“Different characteristics are characteristic of the nature of phenomena.「法性具有不同的特徵特徵。
Their essence is empty and their nature is pure.它們的本質是空的,它們的性質是清淨的。
I pray that you teach me the way of phenomena我祈願您教導我法的方式
That a bodhisattva directly perceives. {11}菩薩直接體悟到這一點。{11}
“In this there is the perfect knowledge of all phenomena.「在此中具有對一切現象的圓滿知識。
There is skill in all the words of the teaching.教法的一切言辭中都蘊含著善巧。
There is no doubt; all doubt and uncertainty have been cut through.沒有任何疑惑;所有的疑慮和不確定性都已被徹底斷除。
Teach me the enlightenment of buddhahood.” {12}請教導我佛果的菩提。
11.24The Bhagavān, knowing the thoughts that were in the mind of the youth Candraprabha, said to him, “Young man, bodhisattva mahāsattvas will attain all these qualities, and they will quickly attain the highest, complete enlightenment of perfect buddhahood, if they possess just one quality. What is that one quality? Young man, it is when the bodhisattva mahāsattvas know the nature of all phenomena.
11.24薄伽梵知曉月光青年心中的念頭,對他說:「青年,菩薩摩訶薩如果具備一種品質,就會獲得所有這些功德,並迅速證得無上正等正覺的佛果。那一種品質是什麼呢?青年,就是菩薩摩訶薩了知一切現象的本性。」
11.25“Young man, how do bodhisattva mahāsattvas know the nature of all phenomena? Young man, bodhisattva mahāsattvas know that all phenomena are nameless; they have no names. They know that all phenomena have no vocalization, they have no expression in speech, they have no letters, they have no birth, they have no cessation, they have no characteristics of cause, they have no characteristics of conditions, they are devoid of characteristics, they have the one characteristic of having no characteristics, they are devoid of attributes, they cannot be conceived of, they have no thought, and they have no mentality.”
11.25「少年,菩薩摩訶薩如何了知一切現象的本性?少年,菩薩摩訶薩了知一切現象都是無名的,沒有名稱。他們了知一切現象沒有言說,沒有語言的表達,沒有文字,沒有生起,沒有消滅,沒有因的特徵,沒有條件的特徵,遠離所有特徵,具有無特徵這唯一的特徵,遠離所有相狀,不能被心識所把握,沒有念,沒有心。」
Then the Bhagavān taught this in the following verses:
“The single teaching on phenomena「關於現象的唯一教法
Is that phenomena have no characteristics.就是現象沒有特徵。
That is the teaching of supreme wisdom那就是無上智的教法
From having true, correct knowledge. {13} [F.41.a]從具有真實、正確的知識而來。
“The bodhisattvas who know「認識現象沒有特徵的菩薩們
That teaching on phenomena那個關於現象的教法
Will not cease from elucidation不會停止闡述
Even though they teach ten million sūtras. {14}即使他們講述一千萬部經。{14}
“Through the blessing of the Guide「通過導師的加持
The ultimate truth is known.勝義諦得以證知。
When the ultimate is known當勝義諦被認知時
There is nothing to be taught. {15}沒有任何東西需要被教導。{15}
“Through one thing, everything is known.通過一個事物,一切都是已知的。
Through one thing, everything is seen.通過一個事物,一切都能被看見。
However much they teach無論他們教導了多少
They will not become proud. {16}他們不會變得驕傲。{16}
“With their minds they have ascertained「他們用心已經確認了
The selflessness of all phenomena,一切現象的無我,
And as they are trained in teaching using terms,他們以用語進行教導的訓練,
They speak with words that are correct. {17}他們用正確的言語說話。{17}
“Whatever sound they hear,「無論聽到什麼聲音,
They know its past.他們知道那個聲音的過去。
Knowing the past of that sound了知那個聲音的過去
They are not captivated by that sound. {18}他們不被那個聲音所迷惑。{18}
“Just like the past of a sound,就像聲音的過去一樣,
So are the characteristics of phenomena.現象的特徵也是如此。
Knowing phenomena to be like that了知現象如此的特質
They will not be reborn in a womb. {19}他們將不會在子宮中再次投生。{19}
“They know that all phenomena are unborn「他們了知一切現象都是無生的
And that they have no origin.以及它們沒有根源。
Knowing this teaching on birth了知這個關於出生的教法
They always remember their previous lives. {20}他們總是能夠憶起自己過去的生世。
“When they remember those lives「當他們記憶起那些生世時
They perform their actions.他們進行他們的行為。

“The bodhisattvas who know「了解空性的菩薩們
The emptiness of phenomena現象的空性
Will never be without that knowledge.永遠不會失去那種智慧。
It is the summit of nothingness. {22}這是虛無的最高峰。
“When the foolish think about愚癡的人思考時
The summit of nothingness空無之頂
They continue in saṃsāra他們繼續在輪迴中。
For millions of eons. {23}數百萬劫。{23}
“If they are able to understand it"如果他們能夠理解它
Just as the Guide knows it,正如導師所了知的那樣,
Then they will have no suffering那麼他們就不會有苦難
And they will not go to the lower realms. {24}他們就不會墮入惡趣。{24}
“All ordinary individuals一切凡夫
Are ignorant of this nature.對此本性無知。
They reject this kind of Dharma他們拒絕這種法
That brings the cessation of suffering. {25}這帶來了苦的止息。{25}
“Phenomena are perceived when「當現象被
No phenomena can be found.找不到任何現象。
Recognize that perception認識那個知覺
When that perception occurs. {26}當那個認知發生時。{26}
“The foolish conceptualize「愚人執著於概念
Through consciousness and perception.通過識和知覺。
The wise do not become ignorant智者不會變得愚癡
In conceiving of phenomena. {27} [F.41.b]在概念化現象中。
“The unpolluted phenomena of emptiness空的無污染現象
Are within the field of experience of the bodhisattvas.在菩薩的經驗領域之中。
This level of those who are wise這是那些智慧者的層次
Is not within the field of experience of the foolish. {28}不在愚癡者的經驗領域之中。{28}
“This level of the bodhisattvas「這是菩薩的境界
Is that of bodhisattva practice.菩薩的修行境界。
It is the adornment of the Buddha’s Dharma.這是佛陀的法的莊嚴。
It is the peace and emptiness that has been taught. {29}這是已經被教導的和平與空。
“When the bodhisattvas「當菩薩們
Eliminate their propensities消除他們的習氣
They remain in the family of the buddhas他們留在佛陀的家族中
And are not captured by form. {30}並且不被色所束縛。{30}
“All phenomena are without location;「一切現象都沒有位置;
They have no location that can be known.它們沒有可被認知的位置。
For the one who knows this about their location,對於瞭解了這一點的人,

Enlightenment is not difficult to attain. {31}菩提不難得到。{31}
“Generosity, conduct, learning, and patience,「佈施、行、慧學和忍,」

“Devas, nāgas, yakṣas, and asuras,天神、龍、夜叉和阿修羅,
Mahoragas and gandharvas, will always honor them.摩睺羅伽和乾闥婆,將永遠恭敬他們。
All the kings of the garuḍas, kinnaras,迦樓羅、緊那羅的所有國王,
And rākṣasas will make offerings to them. {33}羅剎也會對他們供養。{33}
“Millions of buddhas will recite their praises「數百萬尊佛陀將讚歎他們
Continuously for many millions of eons.持續許多百萬劫。
It is not possible to reach the end無法到達盡頭
Of such praise for one who teaches this Dharma. {34}對於傳授這個法的人而言,這樣的讚歎是無法窮盡的。
“The bodhisattvas who know emptiness「了悟空性的菩薩們
Benefit many millions of beings.利益無數百萬的生命。
They kindly teach the Dharma to assemblies他們善心教導法給眾集會
And those who hear it are delighted and respectful.{35}而那些聽聞的生命感到欣喜和恭敬。
“They gain vast knowledge「他們獲得廣大的智慧
So that they see the supreme humans.使得他們看到至高無上的人。
They see the beautiful display of their realms他們看到自己世界的美妙莊嚴。
And the lords of the worlds teach them the Dharma. {36}世界的主宰們教導他們這個法。{36}
“Know that all phenomena are like illusions;「應知一切現象如幻;」
Know that just as space is naturally empty,要知道,正如虛空本性空無一物,
Phenomena are also naturally like that.現象也自然就是這樣的。
In that way there will be no attachment in any kind of activity. {37}這樣一來,在任何活動中都不會有執著。{37}
“With unimpeded wisdom, benefiting others,用無礙的慧,利益他人,
Performing supreme bodhisattva conduct in the world,在世界中進行至高無上的菩薩行,
With wisdom examining all phenomena,用慧來觀察一切現象,
They send emanations to other realms. {38}他們向其他世界派遣化身。{38}
“Those emanations accomplish buddha activities.這些化身成就佛陀的事業。
They go naturally, just as is their nature.他們自然而然地去,就像他們的本性一樣。
The beings who remain in the aspiration to enlightenment [F.42.a]那些堅持菩提願心的生命
Will attain whatever goals they wish for. {39}將會獲得他們所願求的一切目標。
“Those who are steadfastly within the buddha family「那些堅定於佛陀家族之中的生命
Will always honor the buddhas.將永遠恭敬佛陀。
Their bodies will shine brightly,他們的身體將會熠熠生輝,
Adorned by the thirty-two excellent signs. {40}以三十二種殊勝相而莊嚴。{40}
“They will attain the conduct that is within the supreme samādhi「他們將證得至高三摩地中所包含的行」
And an endless multitude of other benefits.還有無量無邊的其他利益。
They will always have great, unshakable strength他們將始終具有偉大、不可動搖的力量
And a majesty that outshines that of kings. {41}以及超越諸王的威光與莊嚴。{41}
“The wise who practice the Buddha’s Dharma「具智慧者修習佛陀的法
Will have an excellent appearance and great beauty.將會擁有卓越的容貌和偉大的美麗。
Their merit and majesty and splendor will increase.他們的福德、威光和光輝將會增長。
Their majesty will outshine even that of the devas. {42}他們的威光將會超越天神的光輝。
“Those who steadfastly remain in the aspiration to enlightenment「那些堅定地安住在菩提願心中的人們」
Will always be friends to all beings.將永遠是所有生命的朋友。
There will never be any darkness永遠不會有任何黑暗
In their teaching of the enlightenment of buddhahood. {43}在他們對於佛果菩提的教導中。{43}
“The nature of phenomena is like that of space,「法性如同虛空一般,
Inexpressible, beyond speech and words.無法表達,超越言語和文字。
Those who know that supreme nature那些了解最高法性的人
Will have an unceasing confidence in teaching. {44}將持續具有不斷的教學信心。{44}
“Even though they teach a hundred thousand sūtras,「雖然他們傳授十萬部經,」
They know the finest details of the past.他們了知過去的最細微的細節。
The wise will always have unimpeded speech,智慧者言語永遠無礙。
Knowing the subtlety of the nature of phenomena. {45}了知法性的微妙之處。{45}
“They will be skilled in hundreds of ways.他們將以數百種方式而熟練。
They will have mastered the many kinds of words and definitions.他們將掌握許多種言辭和定義。
They have certainty in the ripening of actions and results.他們對於業與果報的成熟具有確定的信心。
They become distinctively preeminent in that way. {46}他們以此方式變得特別卓越。{46}
“They will possess unimpaired power.「他們將擁有完好無缺的力量。
They are great wise ones, the heirs of those with the ten strengths.他們是偉大的智者,具有十力者的繼承人。
Knowing the subtle nature of phenomena,了知現象的微妙本質,
They will always have a completely pure memory. {47}他們將永遠擁有完全清淨的記憶。
“Because they know the subtle nature of phenomena,「因為他們了解現象的微妙本質,
They will never hear an unpleasant sound.他們永遠不會聽到令人不悅的聲音。
They always hear pleasant and melodious sounds他們總是聽到悅耳動聽的聲音
And their words are always pleasant. {48}他們的言語總是令人愉悅的。{48}
“Because they know the very subtle nature of phenomena,「因為他們了知現象極為細微的本質,
They have memory, understanding, wisdom, and realization.他們具備記憶、理解、慧和現證。
Similarly, their minds are clear and unpolluted同樣地,他們的心清淨而無污染
And they teach many hundreds of sūtras. {49}他們講說數百部經。{49}
“They are learned in the categories of letters and words.他們精通文字和言詞的各種分類。
They know many different kinds of sounds,他們懂得許多不同種類的聲音,
And they are skilled in meanings and letters. [F.42.b]他們也善於理解意義和文字。
They have these qualities through knowing the nature of phenomena. {50}他們通過了解法性而具有這些品質。
“Because they know the subtle nature of phenomena「因為他們了知法性的微細本質
They are always attractive and charming他們始終魅力十足、令人喜愛
To devas, humans, nāgas, and rākṣasas,對天神、人類、龍和羅剎,
Asuras, mahoragas, and kinnaras. {51}阿修羅、摩睺羅伽和緊那羅。
“Because they know the subtle nature of phenomena因為他們了知現象的微妙本質
They never perceive as frightening他們絕不會把這些視為可怕的。
The extremely terrible and flesh-devouring極其恐怖且食肉的
Crowds of spirits, pretas, and rākṣasas. {52}眾多的靈鬼、餓鬼和羅剎。
“Those who hear the vast teaching of the wise「那些聽聞智者廣大教法的人
Experience vast joy and their hairs stand on end.體驗廣大的喜悅,他們的毛髮豎立起來。
They develop a vast attraction to the buddhas,他們對佛陀生起廣大的歡喜心。
And gain a vast, inconceivable benefit. {53}並獲得廣大、不可思議的利益。{53}
“Even by speaking for many thousands of eons「即便講述許多千個劫的時間
It is not possible to describe the power of the merit無法描述由善逝的法寶記誦所產生的福德力量。
That comes from memorizing this Dharma treasure of the sugatas.那是來自於憶持善逝的這個法寶所產生的福德。
It is immeasurable, infinite, and unquantifiable. {54}無量、無邊、不可計算。{54}
“The jinas to whom offerings have been made in the past,「過去曾受供養的勝者,
The countless buddhas of the future,未來無數的佛陀,
And the buddhas who are present in the ten directions,以及現在遍佈十方的佛陀,
Are so by having memorized this supreme samādhi of peace. {55}是因為憶持了這最高的寂靜三摩地。{55}
“If a person who wishes for merit,「若有人希求福德,
With immeasurable affection for them以無量的親愛之心對待他們
Serves compassionate ones with the ten strengths侍奉具有十力的慈悲聖者
For countless endless millions of eons, {56}經過無數無盡的百萬劫,
“And if a second person who wishes for merit「如果第二個人希望獲得福德
Memorizes, during future times,在未來時代裡憶持,
One verse from this way of the ultimate truth,以這種勝義諦的方式,一句偈頌,
Then the previous person’s merit will not even be a fraction of that. {57}那麼前面那個人的福德甚至不足以與此相比。
“This will be the supreme offering to the buddhas.「這將是對佛陀們最殊勝的供養。
During the future dreadful times在未來的可怕時代
Hearing one of these four-line verses聽聞這四句偈頌
And memorizing it will be an offering to all the buddhas. {58}而且憶持它將是對所有佛陀的供養。{58}
“They will always obtain the best provisions.「他們將始終獲得最好的供養。」
They will always eat the best alms of the land.他們將永遠享受這片土地上最殊勝的供養。
As the best senior heirs of the one with ten strengths,作為具足十力者最傑出的資深繼承者,
They will for a long time make offerings to many jinas. {59}他們將長期向許多勝者供養。{59}
“They will also see myself here on Vulture Peak Mountain.「他們也將在此於鷲峰山見到我。
And I, in buddha wisdom, will thus prophesy to them.我以佛陀的慧,將這樣的預言授予他們。
Also, after my passing away, there will be Maitreya,同時,在我涅槃之後,將會出現彌勒菩薩,
Who at that time will also prophesy to them. {60}那時他也會為他們作預言。{60}
“Similarly, Buddha Amitāyus also"同樣地,無量壽佛也
Has taught many other kinds of benefits:也曾教導許多其他類的利益:
‘All will enter my Sukhāvatī,「一切眾生都將進入我的極樂世界,
And go to Abhirati and see Buddha Akṣobhya.’ {61} [F.43.a]前往妙喜世界,親見阿閦佛陀。
“For countless hundreds of thousands of eons「經過無數百千萬劫
They will never have the fear of downfalls.他們將永遠不會有墮落的恐懼。
In this supreme practice of bodhisattva conduct在這個菩薩行的至高修行中
They will always experience happiness. {62}他們將永遠體驗幸福。{62}
“In that way it has been taught that this,「就這樣被教導,這個,」
Which is preeminent, has the most excellent merit.這是最殊勝的、具有最殊勝福德的。
May I learn every single word,願我學習每一個詞句,
And in future times be a keeper of this sūtra.” {63}在未來的時代裡成為這部經的護持者。
11.77Conclusion of the eleventh chapter, “Becoming a Keeper of the Sūtra.”
