1.1Homage to all buddhas and bodhisattvas!

1.1禮敬一切佛陀和菩薩!

Thus did I hear at one time. The Blessed One was dwelling in Rājagṛha on Vulture Peak, together with a great saṅgha of 1,250 monks and a great saṅgha of bodhisattvas.

如是我聞,一時佛陀住在王舍城靈鷲山,與一千二百五十位比丘的大眾團體,以及一群菩薩在一起。

Knowing all and seeing all,
了知一切,見到一切,
The Victorious One is a peerless being.
勝利者是無與倫比的存在。
The son of King Ajātaśatru
阿闍世王的兒子
Was known as Siṃha. {1}
名叫師子太子。
Accompanied and attended
伴隨著侍奉
By five hundred wealthy noblemen, [F.27.b]
由五百位富有的貴族陪同。
He departed from Rājagṛha
他從王舍城出發
With great royal grandeur. {2}
以極大的王者風采。
Carrying golden parasols,
手拿著金色的傘。
They went before the perfect Buddha.

Bowing their heads to the feet of the Buddha,

They offered the five hundred parasols. {3}

Offering these to the Great Sage,

All of them set out for awakening.

By the power of the perfect Buddha,

Siṃha joined his palms in reverence

“How does one become beautiful?

How does one take miraculous birth?

How does one remember previous births?

Great Sage, please give your instruction.” {6}

Knowing their pure intentions with his wisdom,
佛陀以他的智慧了知他們的清淨意圖,
The Buddha gave his instruction:

“I will give a teaching on what you have asked:

The conduct of bodhisattvas. {7}

“One becomes beautiful through patience.
「人通過忍辱而變得美好。」
One takes miraculous birth by pure conduct.
一個人通過清淨行而獲得神奇之生。
One recalls past lives by giving the Dharma.
通過布施法而憶念過去生。
Youth, know it to be thus!” {8}

“How does one manifest
「怎樣才能顯現
The thirty-two marks, the eighty excellent signs,
三十二相,八十種好,
And a body radiant like gold
及一個身體光明如同黃金
That delights beings upon seeing?” {9}
使得眾生見到時歡喜?」
“The marks manifest through complete generosity.
「這些相好通過圓滿的佈施而顯現。
Likewise, the excellent signs come to be through love.
同樣地,殊勝的相好是由慈而成就的。
The golden radiance of the victorious ones
勝者們的黃金光輝
Manifests by having an attitude of equality toward all beings.” {10}

“How is retention attained?
「如何才能成就持?」
How does absorption arise?
定境是如何產生的?
How do statements become acceptable?
言語如何能被接受?
Great Sage, please give your teaching!” {11}

“Retention is attained through receptivity to the Dharma.
持是通過信受法而獲得的。
Absorption arises by training the mind.
通過訓練心意而生起禪定。
Statements become acceptable
言語得以認可
When one abandons senseless talk.” {12}
當一個人捨棄綺語時。{12}
“How does one become mindful?
「怎樣才能變得具有正念?
O Sage, how does one become intelligent?
智者啊,一個人如何才能變得聰慧?
How does one come to act according to the Dharma? [F.28.a]
怎樣才能夠按照法來行動呢?
O Holy Being, how does one become wise?” {13}
「聖尊啊,一個人如何才能變得智慧呢?」{13}
“One comes to possess mindfulness by being undeceiving.
「一個人通過不欺騙而獲得念。
One becomes intelligent by contemplating meaning.
一個人通過思維義理而變得聰慧。
One comes to act according to the Dharma by having reverence.
有了恭敬心,人就能夠按照法去行動。
One becomes wise by knowing the characteristics of phenomena.” {14}
透過了知現象的特性而變得智慧。
“By what action is a bodhisattva born
菩薩藉由什麼行為而生
In the presence of the guardians of the world?
在世間的守護者面前?
How do they come to ask questions
他們如何開始提問
Directly before the guardians of the world?” {15}

“The one who never obstructs
「永遠不阻礙的那一位
The giving of Dharma
法的布施
Will with great swiftness
以極快的速度來臨 [EN] Will with great swiftness
Come to meet the guardians of the world.” {16}

“How does one relinquish rebirth in inopportune states?
「怎樣才能捨棄投生在不利狀態的輪迴?
How does one go forth to favorable states?
怎樣才能往生於善道?
How does one become heedful
一個人如何變得謹慎
Wherever one takes birth throughout all of one’s lives?” {17}
無論一個人在所有生世中無論何處投生?
“Inopportune births are relinquished through faith.
「不幸的轉生通過信心而被捨棄。
One goes forth to favorable states through moral discipline.
通過戒律,人得以趣向善趣。
One becomes always heedful
人變得總是謹慎警覺
By becoming familiar with emptiness.” {18}
通過熟悉空性而成就。{18}
“O Sage, how do bodhisattvas
尊者啊,菩薩們如何
Purify their karma?
清淨他們的業?
How do they dodge the snares of Māra?
他們如何躲避魔的陷阱?
How do they avoid becoming bereft of Dharma?” {19}
他們如何避免失去法?{19}
“Karma is purified through firm resolution.
「業通過勇悍得以淨化。」
Māra is subdued through perseverance.
魔透過精進而被制伏。
They avoid becoming bereft of the Dharma
他們藉由按照言語去行動而避免失去法
By acting according to their words.” {20}

“How does one’s voice become like the pleasing song
「怎樣才能使自己的聲音變得像迦陵頻伽鳥的美妙歌聲,以及像梵天的聲音一樣呢?
Of the kalaviṅka bird and like the voice of Brahmā?
如迦陵頻伽鳥一般,聲音如同梵天的聲音一樣?
O Sage, how does one please beings
聖者啊,一個人如何才能讓眾生歡喜呢?
With their diverse inclinations?” {21}
怎樣才能令各種不同傾向的眾生感到歡喜?」
“The voice of Brahmā is obtained by speaking truthfully.
梵天的聲音是通過說真實的言語而獲得的。
The voice becomes pleasing by abandoning harsh words.
捨棄粗厲的言語,聲音就會變得悅耳動聽。
One pleases beings
人們欣喜歡悅
By relinquishing senseless talk and slander.” {22}
捨棄綺語和惡口。」{22}
“How does one come to have a long life?
「怎樣才能得到長壽?
How does one come to have fewer illnesses?
一個人怎樣才能少生病呢?
How, O Supreme Guide,
尊敬的最高導師,
Does a retinue come to be undivided?” {23}
眷屬會不會變得不分裂?」{23}
“One comes to have a long life by not killing.
「一個人通過不殺生而獲得長壽。」
One will have fewer illnesses by causing no harm.
不傷害他人就會少得疾病。
A retinue comes to be undivided
隨從眾人得以團結
When one reconciles disputes.” {24}
當一個人調解爭執時。{24}
“How does one obtain wealth? [F.28.b]
「如何才能獲得財富?」
How do possessions cease to diminish?
財物如何才能不減少?
How does one become distinguished
怎樣才能變得傑出
Wherever one is born?” {25}
無論一個人在哪裡出生?
“Wealth is obtained through nonattachment.
財富是通過不執著而獲得的。
Possessions increase by being without stinginess.
財寶會因為沒有慳貪而增長。
One will be distinguished wherever one is born
無論出生在何處,一個人都會受到尊敬。
By being without jealousy.” {26}
不懷嫉妒。」{26}
“How does one obtain divine sight?
「怎樣才能獲得天眼通?
How does one obtain divine hearing?
一個人如何獲得天耳通?
And how, O Guide, does one know
那麼,導師啊,應當怎樣才能知道
The dying, transmigration, and rebirth of beings?” {27}
眾生的死亡、輪迴和往生?」{27}
“Divine sight is obtained by giving lamps.
天眼通是通過布施燈火而得到的。
The ear is purified by giving music.
耳朵通過布施音樂而得到淨化。
The dying, transmigration, and rebirth of beings are known through wisdom.
眾生的死亡、流轉和再生都能通過智慧而知曉。
Thus do these accomplishments arise.” {28}
因此這些成就就這樣產生了。
“O Guide, how do the defilements of bodhisattvas
「尊者啊,菩薩的煩惱如何會消除呢?
Come to be exhausted?
如何被窮盡?
How do they recollect previous lives?
他們如何回憶起前世的事情?
How do they obtain miraculous powers?” {29}
他們如何獲得神通?{29}
“The miraculous powers are obtained by offering vehicles.
「神通是通過供奉車乘而獲得的。」
The recollections are gained by cultivating mindfulness.
念誦是通過培養念而獲得的。
They reach the cessation of defilements
他們達到了煩惱的滅除
By fully abandoning the two extremes.” {30}
通過完全捨棄二邊。{30}
“How is the buddhafield perfected?
"佛土是如何圓滿的?
How is its saṅgha perfected?
它的僧伽是如何圓滿的?
How does its light shine perfectly
它的光芒如何才能圓滿地照耀
Such that the ten directions are illuminated?” {31}
使得十方都被照亮?」{31}
“The buddhafield is perfected through aspiration.
「佛土透過願力而臻於完美。
The saṅgha is perfected by magnetizing disciples.
僧伽因為攝受弟子而圓滿。
The ten directions are illuminated brightly
十方都被明亮地照亮
By offering jeweled canopies.” {32}
通過奉獻寶蓋。
“By what quality does one attain
「以什麼品質才能證得
The embodiment of all qualities,
一切功德的化身,
So that a bodhisattva will be dear to beings
為了讓菩薩被眾生所喜愛
Wherever they are born?” {33}
無論他們在哪裡誕生?」{33}
“By surrendering the mind to the purpose of awakening
「通過將心念奉獻於開悟的目標」
In order to liberate all beings,
為了解脫一切眾生,
They attain the embodiment of all qualities

And will thus be held dear.” {34}

“In what instruction should one train,

And how should one cultivate the mind,

To become an omniscient teacher

Like you, Great Sage?” {35}

“If one trains in being impartial

To all beings without exception,

And if the mind is cultivated in that impartiality,

“Throughout all one’s lives,

Never be abandoned even in a dream, [F.29.a]

Let alone while awake?” {37}

“In whatever region one dwells,

Whether a village or a city,

By correctly guiding others toward awakening,

The mind of awakening is not abandoned.” {38}
菩提心不被捨棄。{38}
“Wherever one is born,

How can one acquire great strength
怎樣才能獲得大力量
And always be elevated with power
並且始終以力量而得到提升
So that even ten million māras can do no harm?” {39}
使得即使十百萬魔也無法傷害?{39}
“In this life, if one offers the five essences
在這一生中,如果一個人奉獻五種精要
And gives courage to those who are afraid,
並賜予害怕者勇氣,
Then wherever one is born
那麼無論一個人在哪裡投生轉世
One will also have great strength,

Always be elevated with power,

And be unharmed even by ten million māras.” {40}

Having heard this teaching
聽聞了這個教法
On the conduct of bodhisattvas
關於菩薩的修行
Directly from the Guardian of the World,
直接從世界的守護者那裡,
Siṃha was overjoyed. {41}
師子太子歡喜無比。{41}
He and his companions
他和他的眷屬們
Spoke the following words:

“We will train

In this teaching on conduct.” {42}

Then the Buddha smiled,

“Ajita, please listen to the reason

“Previously, these boys assembled before

Eight hundred million buddhas and a quadrillion more.

For the purpose of awakening,

They made offerings to those guides of humans. {45}

“Since the time of Dīpaṅkara‍—

“When the splendid eon called

Great Illumination arises,

In that single eon

They will all become guides. {47}

“They will become guides for the world

Named Jñānaketudhvaja,

And their array will be

“From the time of Maitreya

Through three hundred full eons, [F.29.b]

They will always

“Moreover, whoever hears but the name

“Consider someone who for six thousand eons

Filled up all the buddhafields

With jewels and offered them

For the purpose of awakening. {52}

“The tally of that person’s merit

Could never match or compare to

Hearing this Dharma presentation

And setting out for the sake of awakening.” {53}

When this Dharma had been expounded,

By the power of the Protector of the World,
由世間保護者的力量,
The gods brought down a rain of flowers,
諸天降下花雨,
And the trichiliocosm quaked. {54}
三千大千世界為之震動。
Siṃha, along with his companions,
師子太子與他的眾多同伴們,
Obtained the five superknowledges and,
獲得了五種神通,
Having made offerings for one week,
供養一週後,
Took ordination in the teaching. {55}

All of them obtained absorption

And inexhaustible retention.

Wishing to accomplish the welfare of beings,
希望成就眾生的福祉,
They brought them to the Dharma of the buddhas. {56}

1.58When this Dharma presentation was taught, eight hundred million beings set out for supreme awakening. When the Blessed One had spoken, Siṃha, along with his companions and the world with its gods, humans, asuras, and gandharvas, rejoiced and praised the words of the Blessed One.

1.58當這部法教被講授時,八億眾生發心趣向無上開悟。當薄伽梵講完法後,師子太子與他的眷屬,以及包含諸天、人類、阿修羅和乾闥婆在內的世間眾生,都歡喜讚歎薄伽梵的言教。

1.59This concludes the thirty-seventh chapter, “Siṃha’s Questions,” from the eleven hundred chapters of the Dharma presentation of The Noble Great Heap of Jewels.
