1.1Homage to the Three Jewels.

1.1敬禮三寶。

Śāriputra, the greatly wise one,
舍利弗,大智慧者,
Foremost among those with wisdom,
智慧中最殊勝者,
Who turns the wheel of Dharma in the world,
誰在世間轉動法輪,
Asked the Teacher a question.
請問了導師一個問題。
“What karmic result will there be
「將有什麼業果
For those who circumambulate a shrine?
繞行廟堂的人會得到什麼樣的業報呢?
Illustrious one, supreme in the world,
尊貴的聖者,世間至高無上的導師,
Perfect guide, please tell me.”
完美的導師,請告訴我。
The best of those who walk on two feet,
兩足眾生中最殊勝者,
The teacher, the perfect Buddha, answered,
老師、完美的佛陀回答道,
“I will only teach a portion of the virtues
「我只會講述繞行廟堂的一部分功德。
Of those who circumambulate a shrine.
那些繞行廟堂的人所獲得的功德。
“Those who circumambulate a shrine
「那些繞行廟堂的人
Shall be honored everywhere
將被到處尊敬
By devas, nāgas, and likewise by yakṣas,
由天神、龍,以及夜叉們
And, indeed, by piśācas and rākṣasas.
以及毗舍闍和羅剎。
“Those who circumambulate a shrine, [F.199.a]

Even only a single time,

Having gained the opportunity so hard to find,

Will be freed from the eight inopportune states.

Will possess mindfulness, intelligence,

Will be born possessing intelligence

And also a lineage that is pure

In the foremost clan in Jambūdvīpa.

Will have a kind and pure countenance,

A good complexion, and be bright too.
肤色良好,而且光彩照人。
They will dwell in happiness.

Will have great wealth and riches.
將會擁有偉大的財富與富饒。
They will not be miserly, but generous,
他們不會吝嗇,而是慷慨大方,
And will take pleasure in giving.
並且樂於布施。
“Those who circumambulate a shrine
「那些繞廟堂而行的人
Will achieve great prosperity.
將獲得大福報。
They will be beautiful and gorgeous,
他們將會美麗動人、容貌秀麗。
With an attractive and lovely skin tone.
擁有迷人而可愛的膚色。
“Those who circumambulate a shrine
那些繞行廟堂的人
Will not be deluded about phenomena,
將不會對現象感到迷惑,
Seeing conditioned things as empty,
看待有為法為空無。
And will quickly obtain happiness.
會迅速獲得幸福。
“Those who circumambulate a shrine
那些繞行廟堂的人
Will be born as a most excellent kṣatriya ,
將會投生為最殊勝的剎帝利。
Surrounded by a wife and children,
被妻子和孩子們包圍著,
And endowed with strength and vigor.
並且具備力量和精進。
“Those who circumambulate a shrine
「那些在廟堂周圍繞行的人
Will be born as a great landowning brahmin,
將會投生為一位偉大的地主婆羅門,
Endowed with moral discipline and learning,
具足戒律和學問,
With knowledge of the Vedas and mantras.
具備吠陀和咒語的知識。
“Those who circumambulate a shrine
「那些繞行廟堂的人
Will be born as a great landowning householder,
將會投生為偉大的地主居家者,
Having much wealth and many riches,
擁有眾多財富和豐富的資產,
With grain and cattle in abundance.

“Those who circumambulate a shrine

Will become lord and sovereign of Jambūdvīpa,

A righteous king whose rule extends

To the ends of the earth.

Will become a wheel-turning king,

And roll the wheel according to the Dharma.

Will go to higher realms once they pass on from here,

Will be reborn again among humans,

Entering the womb without delusion.

Will not become tainted

By the impurities and flaws of the womb;

They will be like a pure jewel.

Will dwell at ease inside their mothers.

They will be at ease as they are born;

At ease they will suckle their mothers’ breasts.

Will be supported and nourished by many servants,

As well as by their fathers,

And always cared for by nurses.

Will prosper right from birth,

Will have an immaculate body

And never be blind or crippled,

Through hundreds of eons.

Will have perfectly clear eyes,
將擁有完全清晰的眼睛,
Long and shapely, dark, alluring,
身材修長優雅,膚色黝黑迷人,
And also obtain the divine eye.
也獲得天眼。
“Those who circumambulate a shrine
那些繞行廟堂的人
Will be steady in body, steady in mind,
身體安穩,心念安穩,
Steady too in diligence,
精進也堅定不移。
And have steady, rounded shoulders.
具有穩定、圓潤的肩膀。
“Those who circumambulate a shrine
那些繞行廟堂的人
Will be strong, perfect in shape and form,
將會力量充足、身形完美端正,
And their limbs will be well adorned
他們的四肢將得到良好裝飾
With all auspicious marks.
具備所有相好。
“Those who circumambulate a shrine
「那些繞行廟堂的人
Will be the great lord of the gods,
將成為眾神的偉大主宰。
Śakra, whose miraculous powers are great, [F.200.a]
釋提桓因,其神通廣大,
Lord of the Heaven of the Thirty-Three.
三十三天的主宰。
“Those who circumambulate a shrine
「那些繞行廟堂的人
Will be king of the gods in the Heaven Without Strife,
將會成為兜率天的諸天之王,
Or likewise in the Heavens of Joy ,
或同樣在喜樂天中,
Joyful Emanation, or Controlling Others’ Emanations.
樂變化天或他化自在天。
“Those who circumambulate a shrine
「那些繞廟堂而行的人
Will be lord of brahmās
將成為梵天之主
In the Brahmā World,
在梵天世界中,
Honored by tens of millions of gods.
受到千萬天神的尊敬。
“Those who circumambulate a shrine
「那些繞行廟堂的人
Will have wisdom and continually be honored
將會擁有智慧,並且持續受到尊敬
Over tens of billions of eons or, indeed,
在數十億個劫年之中,或者說,
For millions upon billions of eons.

Will have clean bodies, clean clothing,

And the immaculate Dharma,

For tens of millions of eons.

Will be endowed with strength and vigor,

Have no laziness at all,

And achieve the greatest accomplishment.

Will be steady in diligence, steady in power,

Steady in skill, be their own master,
穩固於技能,成為自己的主人,
And swiftly accomplish their goals.
並迅速成就他們的目標。
“Those who circumambulate a shrine

Will have melodious speech,
將擁有悅耳動聽的言語,
A fine, pleasant voice,

And be free from harm and illness.

Will quickly achieve a rebirth

In a place I myself have described

Will obtain the four applications of mindfulness,

The four immeasurable states of mind,

And control over the bases of miraculous power.

Will obtain the four noble truths,

The faculties, the powers,

And the fruition of the factors of awakening.

Will become arhats, ones with great miraculous powers,
將成為阿羅漢,擁有偉大的神通。
Possessing the six supernormal faculties,
具足六神通,
Without defilement, and all their afflictions dispelled.
沒有污垢,所有的煩惱都已消除。
“Those who circumambulate a shrine

Will release attachment and aversion,
將會放下執著和厭惡,
Release all enmities,

And achieve the awakening of a pratyekabuddha.

Will become a tathāgata in the world,

With a body the color of gold

And adorned with the marks.
並具備諸相的莊嚴。
“Circumambulation is an act of the body.
「繞行是身體的行為。」
Circumambulation is an act of speech.
繞行是語言的行為。
Circumambulation is an act of the mind.
繞行是一種心念的行為。
Circumambulation is also the making of a vow.
繞行也是發願。
Here, one easily achieves through circumambulation
在這裡,人們可以輕易地透過繞行來達成難以企及的目標。
Goals that are difficult to reach.

“Mere words cannot well convey,

Even slightly, the virtues of those

The virtues of venerating shrines,

Do not add up to even a sixteenth of the worth

Wearing jeweled earrings and bangles,

Are not equal to a single lump of clay
比不上一塊黏土
Offered with a thought of joy by a wise one

At shrines of a buddha.
在佛陀的廟堂處。
“Hundreds of thousands of bowls of Jambu River gold [F.201.a]
「數百萬碗閻浮河黃金
Are not equal to a handful of flower petals
不等於一把花瓣
Scattered with a thought of joy by a wise one
由聰慧的人以喜樂之心散撒
At shrines of a buddha.
在佛陀的廟堂裡。
“Tens of millions of bushels of Jambu River gold
「閻浮河黃金堆積數千萬斛
Are not equal to a flower garland
不等同於一束花卉花環
Held up with a thought of joy by a wise one
被智者以喜樂天的念想所舉起
At shrines of a buddha.
在佛陀的廟堂裡。
“Hundreds of thousands of heaps of Jambu River gold
「數百千堆閻浮河金子
Are not equal to scented water
比不上香水
Sprinkled with a thought of joy by a wise one
由聰慧者以喜樂天的念頭所灑淨
At shrines of a buddha.
在佛陀的廟堂。
“Hundreds of thousands of grams of Jambu River gold
「閻浮河黃金數百千克
Are not equal to an oil lamp
不足以等同於一盞油燈
Lit with a thought of joy by a wise one
由一位智者以喜樂天的心念點亮
At shrines of a buddha.
在佛陀的廟堂。
“Hundreds of thousands of mountains of gold
「數百萬座金山
Are not equal to a banner or canopy
不等於一面旗幡或華蓋
Raised with a thought of joy by a wise one
由聰慧的人帶著喜樂天的念頭而豎立
At shrines of a buddha.
在佛陀的廟堂。
“This is the teaching on the benefits
「這是關於供養如來的功德利益的教誨
Of making offerings to tathāgatas,
向如來做供養,
Perfect buddhas, peerless caravan leaders,
圓滿的佛陀,無與倫比的商隊領袖,
Who are limitless, just like the ocean.
無量如海的。
“Whether one makes offerings to a living buddha
「無論是對一位住世的佛陀供養
Or makes them to one who has passed into nirvāṇa,
或是向已證涅槃者供養,
There is no difference in merit
所獲得的福德沒有區別
If the thought is equally devout.
如果心念同樣虔誠。
“In this way, buddhas are inconceivable;
「就這樣,佛陀是不可思議的;
A buddha’s qualities are also inconceivable.
佛陀的功德也是不可思議的。
For those who have faith in the inconceivable,
對於那些對不可思議之事懷有信心的人,
The karmic fruit is also inconceivable.”
業果也是不可思議的。
