1.1Homage to all buddhas and bodhisattvas!

1.1恭敬禮敬所有諸佛及菩薩!

Thus did I hear at one time. The Blessed One was residing on Vulture Peak in Rājagṛha accompanied by a saṅgha of 1,250 bhikṣus and a saṅgha of innumerable, countless bodhisattvas. Surrounded also by various retinues of gods, nāgas, yakṣas, and other beings, he was teaching them the Dharma.

我聞如是。一時,世尊住在王舍城鷲峰,與一千二百五十位比丘的僧團和無量無數的菩薩僧團在一起。四周還圍繞著天神、龍、夜叉和其他各種眾生的隨從,世尊為他們講說法。

1.2At that time, the Blessed One was absorbed in the meditative concentration called wheel of meditative concentration . Through the power of that meditative concentration, all the buddha lands shook and were illuminated by a great light.

1.2此時,世尊入於名為禪定輪經的三昧。透過此三昧的力量,所有佛國土都為之震動,並被偉大的光明所照耀。

1.3Then, the bodhisattva Youthful Mañjuśrī, who was present in that retinue, rose from his seat and said to the Blessed One, “Blessed One, your absorption in the wheel of meditative concentration is amazing. Sugata, it is truly amazing.”

1.3那時,在場的菩薩文殊菩薩從座位上站起來,對世尊說:「世尊,您進入禪定輪經的三昧真是不可思議。善逝,這真是太不可思議了。」

1.4The Blessed One asked, “Mañjuśrī, do you know the very limit of reality?”

1.4世尊問道:「文殊菩薩,你知道法性嗎?」

“I know it, Blessed One,” replied the bodhisattva Mañjuśrī.

「世尊,我知道,」菩薩文殊菩薩回答道。

1.5“Mañjuśrī, where is the very limit of reality?” asked the Blessed One.

1.5世尊問道:「文殊菩薩,法性在什麼地方?」

Mañjuśrī replied, “Blessed One, the very limit of reality is where it is not.”

文殊菩薩回答說:「世尊,法性就在它不存在的地方。」

1.6“Mañjuśrī, where is it not?” asked the Blessed One,

1.6「文殊菩薩,它在哪裡不是呢?」世尊問道。

Mañjuśrī replied, “Blessed One, it is without any location.”

文殊菩薩回答說:「世尊,禪定無有任何處所。」

1.7The Blessed One asked, “Mañjuśrī, what is meditation?”

1.7世尊問道:「文殊菩薩,什麼是禪定呢?」

Mañjuśrī replied, “Blessed One, meditation means nonmeditation.”

文殊菩薩回答說:「世尊,禪定是指不禪定。」

1.8Then Mañjuśrī asked, “How does the Tathāgata teach the Dharma?”

1.8然後文殊菩薩問道:「如來如何宣說法呢?」

“Mañjuśrī,” replied the Blessed One, “I teach the Dharma to the effect that forms are undestroyed and unborn. I teach the Dharma to the effect that feelings, perceptions, formations, and consciousnesses are undestroyed and unborn. I turn the wheel of Dharma to the effect that attachment, hatred, and ignorance are undestroyed and unborn. [F.302.b] I have taught that in this way no phenomenon whatsoever has been destroyed or produced in the state of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete awakening.”

世尊回答說:「文殊菩薩,我教法的意思是色既未被摧毀也未曾生起。我教法的意思是受、想、行、識既未被摧毀也未曾生起。我轉動法輪的意思是貪、瞋、癡既未被摧毀也未曾生起。我已教導說,以這樣的方式,在無上正等正覺的境地中,沒有任何現象曾被摧毀或產生過。」

1.9Then, though he already knew the answer, the Blessed One asked the Youthful Mañjuśrī, “Mañjuśrī, do you know the sphere of phenomena?”

1.9之後,世尊雖然早已知道答案,但仍然問年輕的文殊菩薩說:「文殊菩薩,你知道法界嗎?」

“I know it if I focus on it,” replied Mañjuśrī.

文殊菩薩回答:「如果我專注於它,我就知道它。」

1.10The Blessed One asked, “Mañjuśrī, do you know the world that is experienced?”

1.10世尊問:「文殊菩薩,你知道被體驗的世界嗎?」

“Blessed One, the world is merely that which is experienced by people who are illusory apparitions. Blessed One, that which is called ‘the world’ is essentially a nonexistent thing.”

「世尊,世界只不過是幻化身人所體驗的而已。世尊,所謂的『世界』本質上就是一個不存在的東西。」

1.11The Blessed One said, “The Tathāgata wishes to hear the Dharma. Demonstrate your inspired speech!”

1.11世尊說:「如來希望聽聞此法。請展示你的妙語妙言吧!」

1.12Mañjuśrī asked, “With what should I begin to demonstrate my inspired speech?”

1.12文殊菩薩問道:「我應該從什麼地方開始展示我的妙語?」

“Begin with the sphere of phenomena, Mañjuśrī,” replied the Blessed One.

「文殊菩薩,就從法界開始吧,」世尊回答說。

“Blessed One, I do not see any phenomenon that is not the sphere of phenomena.”

世尊,我不見有任何現象不是法界。

“Those who have unfounded pride will be afraid,” said the Blessed One.

「有增上慢者將會感到恐懼。」世尊說。

1.13“Blessed One,” replied Mañjuśrī, “if the very limit of reality is afraid, then those who have unfounded pride will be afraid. Why? Because the very limit of reality and those who have unfounded pride are one and the same, and indistinguishable.”

1.13文殊菩薩回答說:「世尊,如果法性害怕,那麼具有增上慢的人就會害怕。為什麼呢?因為法性與具有增上慢的人是一體的,無法區分。」

“Mañjuśrī,” said the Blessed One, “you are a vajra basis.”

「文殊菩薩,」世尊說,「你是金剛體。」

1.14“Blessed One,” said Mañjuśrī, “since all phenomena are indivisible and inconceivable, they too are vajra bases. Why are they said to be vajra bases? Because sentient beings do not exist and things do not exist, they too are vajra bases.

1.14「世尊,」文殊菩薩說,「因為一切現象都是不可分割、無法思議的,它們也都是金剛體。為什麼說它們是金剛體呢?因為眾生不存在、事物不存在,它們也都是金剛體。」

1.15“Blessed One, such a very limit of reality does not exist. Whatever is such a limit neither comes nor goes. Blessed One, dwelling on the meaning of having such a limit, one meditates on the meaning of the absence of an intrinsic nature, keeps to remote places, and abandons distractions.” [F.303.a]

1.15「世尊,這樣的法性是不存在的。無論什麼是這樣的極限,都既不來也不去。世尊,住於具有這樣極限的意義,一個人就冥想於無自性的意義,守持於遠離之地,並放棄散亂。」

1.16Then Venerable Śāriputra said to the bodhisattva Mañjuśrī, “Mañjuśrī, the Dharma you have taught is amazing.”

1.16那時尊者舍利弗對菩薩文殊菩薩說:「文殊菩薩,你所說的法實在是太不可思議了。」

1.17“Honorable Śāriputra, it is not so amazing,” replied Mañjuśrī. “The uncontaminated arhats are not vessels for this Dharma teaching. Why? Because a Dharma teaching like this does not engage with the attributes of ordinary beings, it does not engage with the attributes of arhats, it does not engage with the attributes of pratyekabuddhas, and it does not engage with the attributes of tathāgatas. It does not engage at all in the observation of phenomena. This is because it neither engages in nor retreats from anything. This is because all phenomena are void.”

1.17「尊敬的舍利弗,」文殊菩薩回答道,「並非如此驚人。清淨的阿羅漢不是這個法教的法器。為什麼呢?因為像這樣的法教不涉入凡夫的特質,不涉入阿羅漢的特質,不涉入辟支佛的特質,也不涉入如來的特質。它根本不涉入對現象的觀察。這是因為它既不涉入任何事物,也不退離任何事物。這是因為一切現象都是空性的。」

1.18“Mañjuśrī, will you say what you had in mind?”

1.18"文殊菩薩,你心裡想的是什麼?請說出來吧。"

“Honorable Śāriputra,” replied Mañjuśrī, “if the state of an arhat is the state in which attachment, hatred, and ignorance have been extinguished, then of what can they be a vessel? Of what kind of Dharma can they be a vessel? It is with this in mind that I say that arhats, whose contaminants have been extinguished, are not vessels for this Dharma teaching.

文殊菩薩回答說:「尊敬的舍利弗,如果阿羅漢的境界是貪、瞋、癡都已經滅除的境界,那麼他們又能是什麼的容器呢?他們又能是什麼樣的法的容器呢?正是基於這個考慮,我才說那些煩惱已經滅除的阿羅漢,不是這個法教的容器。」

1.19“Honorable Śāriputra, do you esteem this as a Dharma without death and rebirth?”

1.19「尊敬的舍利弗,你認為這是一個沒有死亡和輪迴的法嗎?」

“Mañjuśrī, I do.”

「文殊菩薩,我是這樣認為的。」

1.20Then, the Blessed One said to the bodhisattva Mañjuśrī, “Mañjuśrī, excellent! Excellent! You are to be praised for your mastery of the meaning of the profound Dharma.”

1.20爾時,世尊告菩薩文殊菩薩言:「文殊,善哉!善哉!汝於深法義趣之掌握,實堪讚歎。」

1.21After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the bodhisattva Youthful Mañjuśrī, the venerable Śāriputra, and the world with its gods, humans, asuras, and gandharvas rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said.

1.21世尊說完這些話後,菩薩文殊菩薩、尊者舍利弗,以及包括天神、人類、阿修羅和乾闥婆在內的世間眾生都歡喜踴躍,讚歎世尊所說的法。

1.22This concludes the noble Mahāyāna sūtra “The Wheel of Meditative Concentration.”
